Hi joe-looks like you are well on the way to having a really nice set-up but I am a bit confused. Maybe you have covered this already but could you explain this. The building that they just framed in. Is that an indoor place for you to dig or is this where the tunnel will start or just another building? Just curious but everything is looking good!! I like the picture of the D9 sitting next to the other dozer. That shows just how big the 9 is. Also, did you ever find anything that would pull the D9 scraper?

hi joe got a question for you have you everthought of keeping a step counter to see how many steps you take diggin the basement out hehe

The clerk pointed out the 165 1st, I asked if it came with the foot pedal, no, so the clerk put me on to the 180... you got a DVD? hmmm

I may take you up on that Shawn, we'll see where I'm at in the new year. Thank you for the offer.

Tom, the lean-to building came about specifically for the tunnelling out from my basement. There'll be a narrow stairway that I'll walk up, but I would also have a dirt road to the side of the stairs for the machinery to drive out, the models are getting bigger & heavier all the time and my back is getting weaker to carry them. lol

If I remember right, the math for 10 degree slope was 6 foot length for each 1foot vertical; the lean-to is not long enough for 10 degrees. In 2005 the ramp coming out of my basement was 22L to rise 6H & that worked out to 17 degrees. Tracked equip can climb that easy enough, wheeled equip will struggle. The lean-to will give me added storage as well.

No, the 10th scale pan is too heavy for the 4206 to drawbar pull the pan empty in the dirt! It would pull it empty on the cement floor, sorta. The tires on the pan I think are made from delrin, a rubber tire might make a world of difference, but that pan is freaking heavy, probably something close to 50lbs.

A step counter? I could just haul the dirt straight from the walls/floor to outside. But all the other activities of screen it/crush it/screen it again/crush again was a means of fining up the dirt as much as possible when I was using a 4" width conveyer to elevate the dirt back in 06 to 10, the finer the dirt, the less that rolled back... now the extra steps is just to extend the fun as long as possible. If it ever gets to be that all have to do is scoop & pile the same dirt from one corner to the next, then I'll probably quit the hobby.

This new workshop just gave me 5 more yrs of meaningful dirt work to do; dig a tunnel, hauling dirt into the back room & building up around the outside of the building. My playground has to be in a temperature controlled environment b/c I have virtually zero free time in the warm sunshine. ;)

Thanks joe-I thought that might be for the tunnel but I couldn't remember. If it ever gets to be that all have to do is scoop & pile the same dirt from one corner to the next, then I'll probably quit the hobby.
;)
I know what you mean about this joe. I have this problem. My dragline pit is small and all I do is move the dirt about 2' and then move it back. That is not fun:(

Last Saturday, the last warm sunny day probably for this yr, I had to crawl under my roadway to get in the well to turn off the water valve that goes outside to the barnyard so I could then attach an air compressor to blow out the lines. I was nearly on my belly to get through there... time to dig 'er out!

18" summer rainfall, the water soaks bad in this corner, I didn't have any standing water around, but it's noticeably moist... which also makes for nice digging. To the left of the pic it gets quite a bit dryer so I may have to soak some of that dirt to soften it up. So with the dirt being moist, I have to haul the lumps over by the furnace to dry out before putting through the crusher.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2014/003_zpse3c102c1.jpg

I prepped the area over the crusher beforehand... had to raise up the turnbuckle on the upper roadway 5" so the trk/bd trl can pass underneath.

...roadway collapse!!!

I just weighed the 4206 now, it's 25lbs. The front tires barely decended & the roadway dropped!!! Less than 2 seconds & I caught the 4206 before it could hit the ground, but the hanging 4206 DESTROYED my bd trl. :(

I think it was March 2005 that that bd trl went into service... it's hauled a mega amount of dirt the last decade. I hope I can glue it all back together straight.

Well like you said, it's been a well used machine :). Just a couple more war wounds once she is back together. That's the way I like em anyway, scratched and dented,, shows good use and lots of fun!!

I dont want to derail your thread, but do you have any information on the LED lights that you had installed in your shop. I am going to be completing my shop in the basement this winter and have been stressing the lighting. I hate working in a dim shop or one that has a lot of shadows. Those lights look really nice.

I'm kinda sorta thinking about covering the top with 1/4" plate steel with a layer of rubber matting underneath to dull the sound. It's a piece of 1/4" plate in this picture. And that vise, I bought for the farm shop awhile ago, then at an auction a yr ago I picked up a welding table with 3 vises on it. I'm glad I hung on to it cuase this vise is big enough that I have been using it the last couple hrs without it bolted down & it doesn't moved while cut out metal. :D

Here's what I've been tinkering with lately, a bit more tweaking to do with it yet and then tear it all apart to paint 'er up. ;)

Not a whole lot of blade travel with this Firgelli actuator, only lifts maybe 1/2 inch above/below level... seriously considering gutting the ol' Stahl dozer for it's hyds.

Things are really moving alone at your place. ( New equipment / buildings ) Great to see ! !
I think you should keep the electric's on your new dozer regarding the blade operation, if it works, keep it simple. Is it possible to get firgelli's with more throw ?

The way Izzy made the blade lift it could be changed to get a different angle. It has a pivot under the hood and that is where the firgelli is located moving both blade cylinders with one firgelli.

Sorry Kalle, I keep forgetting to get that pic... not too much longer & the 450 will be in the pit alongside the 850. ;)

The limited blade movement is a bit of a hurdle Greg, I'm not sure if there'd be enough room for a 50mm stroke Firgelli... I'll just keep using keep using it like it is for now. ;)

Plasterboard would make for a better show Shawn, demolishing a small building... ugh ugh ugh

I was in the city last week for xmas, a trip to a hobbyshop to get me some brass sheet... I'm in disbelief that it took me all day to make this & it's still not perfect... if I wasn't so lazy I'd throw it trash & start again.

Grousser differences?

Good picture of the hoe makes me ask - what are the design intentions between a triple pad vs. Single or double? I'm sure it must have something to do with traction and flotation. Is it effective in our scales or more for looks?

Wish my bench have that much space on it!

No doors or windows in the lean-to yet. I intend to take out an existing window from rear of main building, put a door in its place & move the window onto the east wall of lean-to. I didn't do it now b/c the main building is sealed (no drafts) for the winter.

Not too bad RW, once I got all the pieces clamped in place & got busy soldering. The piece that the hose fittings screw into, that piece tilted upward somewhat, would have been better if tilted down that wee bit, with the hoses in it lifts the front of the tank a bit... I didn't pressure test, I got all seams with plenty of solder... guess I'll find out when I put oil in it.

Grousers: one bar for dozers = great traction. 3 bars on this excavator, that's what they usually look like & it's for floatation. The model is heavy, I hope it doesn't slide around.

I've been busy fixing old equip the last couple days... left my camera out in the shop... fix ol' whitey's transmission - an aluminum gear in the top shaft in the middle had nearly worn smooth, good reason for it to be skipping in 2nd gear. SA loader replacing a bunch of bent track pins & re-lubricating the tracks. Stahl wheel loader, bucket cyl mount on the loader body need to make a new one. Green 6wd dump trk, putting new drive motors in.... and a few other things.

It's been great enjoyment the last week working out in the shop while it's -30's & storming. Toasty in there & plenty of space to work at different things. :)

I know you have had a few order from premacon, I had an order on the 11 of dec, haven't got it yet, curious if that is the norm on occasion? It's a 30mph sw wind today making it a sob just to get out the door! It'll be nice when that tunnel is done. :)

I have only had one order from Premacon in my life, I was told it would be March before the hammer would be available for shipment, then within 10days of placing order I got an email confirmation that it had shipped... somebody else must have cancelled. But yeah, about 8dys later it was in my hands.

An order from Fumotec was close to 3wks to get it. Right around xmas is a bad time to order anything from anywhere! And ordering from the USA is slow all year long, might be a week or might be a month, I don't know why... and shipping cost from USA is more than double than what it is from Europe. Go figure?!

So I (mouth) pressure tested my tank today, found a leak about the upper middle (resolder) & fitting on top needed a different sealant used. Waiting for that to dry before testing again.

The Stahl adt is working fine, might start the Fumotec adt in a few weeks.

I think the trans in this trk dates back to 1998 . http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/019_zpsa12bebf3.jpg

I made the engine hood not quite high enough for this 3D printed piece to fit, added a 3mm shim, now it fits.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/033_zps88918250.jpg

I unbolted the pump from the floor so I could get a good grip with my fingers on the suction & return lines... presently no more leaks. I haven't added any inserts to the return lines.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/027_zps3f987646.jpg

I got it all tuned up: the tracks, the swing, the pump, all 5 valves; everything works, mixes are programmed. I even tried out the hammer, pounding into a piece of wood 2x4 a quarter inch deep is where it stopped. Now to just finish the bodywork, paint it & off to the basement. :D

Yes indeed Greg, I have made many repairs to old models the last couple weeks & still a few more oldies to do yet. Back to work? this JD hoe is brand new a kid brother to the 850. Maybe Sunday I'll have pics with the two side by side. ;)

It's in the basement now Calum with no body, I've been doing some trials with the hammer... I don't think I have it tuned right as the hammer isn't working that good. I sent Premacon an email a few days ago with some questions, I'm waiting for a response.

But in the meantime, I start on the next Fumotec model, B45 ADT.

RW, I spend a lot of time browsing this forum, these guys have a lot of great ideas to improve what is already an awesome kit to build.

I've been tinkering all week with the 450 trying to get it to work just the way I want it to... I find this hyd pump & motor combo (900ml/min) to be putting out way too much flow, and with only 14mm cyl bores it extends/retracts far too quick.

During my testing I found a leaker too, the delivery tube on the stick cyl needed re-soldering. And having these extra valves on the hoe, I was able to the test the cyl without having to install on the model.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/004_zpss66h0agi.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/005_zps9qndvz34.jpg

I also changed the hoses from the valves to the brass tubes from 4/2.5mm to 4/2mm to restrict oil flow somewhat to help slow it down. I checked the bores of both 2.5mm fittings & 2mm fittings with a drill bit & they're both the same at 1.5mm. The 4/2mm hose is a softer, more flexible rubber & slipped over the 2.5 fitting no problem.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/002_zpslnydyabs.jpg

I have this rpm speed sensing tool from Reed, I used it to precisely set my pump motor at 50%. Full speed is 9000rpm. What I had thought was less than half by listening to it was actually 5800rpm. Now it's at 4500rpm. I set the pressure to 18bar.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/007_zpsvxrmpvwl.jpg

Running the model on the bench, the hyd movement seems about right & perhaps fluent movements will be more manageable... off to the basement for more trials & tuning.

I didn't have much for esc's in my inventory, currently using a Banebot, the swing drive seems a little choppy. The Servonaut MFR esc that Frank sent with the kit to use for the swing drive, I used it in my 4206 in the electric steering actuator last spring. The MFR works super smooth in that application. Gonna have to get another MFR or a few of them. ;)

Cooper

Always some tweaking to get it how ya want. That's really nice having the extra valve using it for a quick hookup! Speaking of swing drive, what's a good low backlash gear motor (vertical mount) ? I ask as the revamp I'm doing has had a lot of slop left/right. I was wanting to get a gear head motor that has better planetary gears or tolerances . I thought about making the four mounting holes oblong so I could tighten up the clearance between ring gear and pinion gear. I hate that slop. And the gear motor that's in it isn't a planetary system but just some arranged gears inside the reduction housing. And I think I recall you saying you control some of the extend/retract speed with limiting how far the servo opens valve? Is that correct? Your almost ready to be able to sit back and enjoy some home-work, nice and toasty too!!!

Lil Giants
01-26-2015, 08:21 PM
I found out today from Frank that the Jung pump in this 450 is a 0,45/rev... no freaking wonder I've been having a bytch of a time with excessive hyd speed.

Even at 50% motor speed it's still borderline quick, it could be a bit slower yet for fluent movement. And running the motor at such slow speed, I think it's causing the Roxxy esc to behave a little erratic too with +/-rpm b/c the lift/lower of the boom will pulsate occasionally.

900ml/min divide 0,45ml/min = 2000rpm output

9000rpm top motor speed divide 2000rpm out speed = 4,5:1 reduction head

The next size smaller Jung pump is 0,3ml/rev, which will equal approx 600ml/min at full motor speed. So running motor at 70% should maintain a more accurate flow rate of 420ml/min, which I think is right where I want to be. ;)

Yes RW, lower EPA on valves will make them less sensitive to operate, it will take more stick throw to make the valves move. I have the values for boom, stick, bucket between 60 - 70% and using dual rates with curves & offsets I can make each valve react quicker without opening much... if that makes sense?

Your swing motor/gearhead sounds like a spur gear, not overly strong or as powerful as a planetary head. The swing motor/planetary in my 450 is about 83mm long... vertically, would that be above your cab?

I will try changing swing esc for a smoother swing than what I have currently. The gear slop of pinion & ring gear is a bit much too, but I can't get the pinion any closer... a bigger ring gear would need to be 3D printed for a tighter mesh.

I very much prefer the direct motor drive on the swing of my 850 vs the horizontal with bevel gears in this 450. I'm using a 2x12 Sabertooth esc & it's pretty smooth whether the 850 is level or steep angle... and the pinion/ring gear mesh is not overly tight either... it must be that Banebot esc in the 450 is just not right for this job... I'd try a 2x12 if I had a spare, but it's kind of a bulky dual esc for a model that don't have space to spare, nor a need for the 2nd esc.

Lil Giants

Swing drive esc, I started with a Banebot 12v brushed esc, works great for Leimbach pump control & trks for/rev, but not good for 450 swing drive, too jerky.

So then I try today a Mtronics Viper Marine 15... it’s very smooth in trks & works great for Wedico pump control too... but here lies the mystery? Swinging right, esc works correct, very smooth & fine control. But swinging left activates track motors. Just move tx lever ever so little to swing left very slow & the track motors (both sides) go backwards at approx 1/3 speed. Swing full speed left & the track motors stop. I triple check all my wiring, radio settings, swing ch not mixed with any ch, I even changed AR9020 receivers, I can’t find any reason for this to happen.

Have anyone ever had two different brand esc’s work in sync before? Operating the Roxxy brushless esc's for tracks didn't affect the swing at all.

I put a Servonaut S20 esc in now for swing, everything works separately as it should.

The 850 did a few winters ago...

I dug this out by hand with an air chisel last night, widened it to the left about 8 inches, dug back about 3 feet. It took about an hour. Might be a cube of dirt to process, some of it is dry enough for the crusher, some of it will need to be dump near the furnace to dry out 1st.

No, it's all raw steel, I painted it. And despite washing all the steel parts in the kitchen sink with dish soap & then using a metal etch primer, there's still some areas where the paint didn't stick. :( I think the primers today aren't the quality they were 10yrs ago.

What I have done with the chips in the past, spray from the rattle can into a plastic cup & then brush paint... looks good from a far. :D

I request from Fumotec to supply me with all the necessary servos & esc's, I have to mail order such things from somewhere anyway, so that's additional to the kit cost.

This clay dirt after I crush, screen, crush some more, it's like water by the time I haul it out & the fine dry dirt will dribble out any crack. Gotta get that tailgate sealed tight. That's masking tape that I used & then laminated it with glue, don't know how long it will last.

Thank you Al, it's quite a jungle in there for my big clumsy fingers.

its a good thing you have a tunnel project to do. could you imagine if you had these sized machines when you began the dig and how much more they would have moved.... Then again, they wouldn't have fit down there till now! :)
I'm loving that new ADT !

Joe, congrats on the new B50, what a machine. That looks to be just the ticket for moving more material out...You sure got lucky on the overhead clearance, I guess overloading the box and mounding material over the sides will be taken care of on the way out? :)

Lil Giants

The drive out is getting a bit long Brian as the roadway is getting narrower all the time with bigger equipment, kinda makes for slow uneasy navigating not to rub the wall or fall off the edge... I'll get what loose dirt there is out of the way, then tear everything out & rebuild it with 1/2" sheet @ 24 inches wide... most of the roadway currently is only 16 inches with most of it 3/8 sheet & some is 1/4, which was fine for the Tamiya trks.

I wish I had this JD850 when I started Mario, I would have done zero hand digging! :D Yes, thank goodness for the tunnel project or I'd be just about left with nothing to do... I'll be a few yrs at that before wondering what to do next for a dirtwork project.

Thanx Jason, it's a mighty hauler alright. I knew the clearance was gonna be close, fortunately I didn't have to take a grinder to the B50 to make it fit. :)

Thursday morning there was still a few inches snow on the ground, but it warmed up fast to 15 before noon, such a bright warm sun that the pile was dry enough to work with the dozer by 5pm!

Oh it's getting wore out Mario, a lot of it is 8yrs old. New roads coming soon indeed! Build everything from 1/2 sheet, bolt it all together with steel strapping b/c the trks are only going to get bigger from here on out. :D

So I got this remote camera last fall for my FWA Ford & grain pup just incase fields were gonna be too wet for tandem grain trk... fortunately the sun came out & stayed for several weeks straight & we never had to resort to that method of hauling the crop off the field. :) I tried out the camera today, mounted the camera on my old satellite dish for internet, it gave a perfect view of pile. Took the viewer with me downstairs & as soon as I turned on Spektrum radios for B50 & JD850, the view screen scrambled.

Refer to manual on the wireless camera to discover that the frequency iftoperates on is 2.4Ghz, the same as my radios. :(

I literally just rolled through 56 pages of this story - and I am amazed at you and the R/Cs. (I also watched all related videos - thankfully my ISP isn't lame or I'd have killed a usage limit within a week).

I'm planning a 'King Hauler' custom build - and at least 3 trailers: flat 40', lowboy 45', and a 'rock hauler' at 30' (1:1 sizes scaled properly to 1:14). After viewing all of this - I already know what parts to upgrade from the start on the truck, and where to make sure I reinforce on my custom trailers (especially the rock hauler).

So yesterday I got a "back up" camera to try out, it works on 12v & I have a DC lead acid battery outside to provide power. The camera is about 9' high, top of my living room window, at that height it gave me the best view so I could reasonably see the edges of the pile so I didn't get too close & roll off the edge. The vid screen's resolution is not that great, the B50 is a bit blurry. And the video view, it's like a mirror image; what you see to be a left turn is actually a right turn, kinda tricky to drive. :D

Difficult to place a camera anywhere on this B50.. top of box just clears the opening, the sides of vehicle are barely an inch away from wall & the plastic body is held in place by small magnets.

I did on the internet a wireless security camera that I could access through a internet service network to see it on my IPhone, but then I don't have the data to spare most months anyway.

Easy solution to the "dump" you have created
At work the wind row on the tip edge has to half the tire height of the largest tire to stop the trucks going through.

It looks just like a mine overburden dump as well

I lol'd Andy!!! :D Was it a yearling that chase it down? Funny she didn't crush it with her head. :D

A good tip Daniel, but from where I'm standing looking out the window, when the B50 is on the far side of pile I barely see the top of the tire. Backing up to the edge to dump is not a problem, when I see the back of the B50 starting to drop, I stop & dump. It's backing up along the far edge of the pile & not knowing how close I was, then the bank giving way & the B50 rolling on its lid & then hyd oil leaking out of the tank... happened once last weekend. No worries with the back up cam now. ;)

10-4 Tom! That big bucket is about 70% larger than stock digging bucket... with a heeping bucket full the 35bar pressure is maxxed out to lift with any sort of speed. I couldn't have gone any bigger. If the stick is out more than 30° from perpendicular, the weight of a bucket full will tip the hoe swinging to the side, and the counterweight is filled full of BB's, more 10lbs.

Getting below ground level now. This B50 is an awesome hauler!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/003_zpsxfcfbjja.jpg

The B50 needs that little patch of plywood there to get out of the hole, the dirt is so dry it's like beach sand, the B50 starts to climb & spins out, going no further otherwise!

My good luck with lipos just ran out 30minutes ago!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/003_zpsoymn12vw.jpg

I was down in the basement loading the B50 with the JD850, heard a noise like something fell off the kitchen table... kept digging. Heard it again within a minute... went upstairs to see what's up? Small fire in the living room!

The glass jar with metal lid probably what I heard pop, contained most of the lipo explosion, but the glass jar still blew apart.

Grabbed an old coat & smothered the fire, immediately open front & back door, set up 24" fan at back door & cleared the smoke within 10 mins.

Cleaning up the mess, carpet is trashed... cut it out with my jack knife & pitched it out in the barrel.

That was a few month old higher end brand name lipo... how many times I have set the charger & LEFT the house?! Never again!

Charger goes to the shop, out in the middle of the cement floor, inside a metal box.

I was lucky! :) DAYUM I was lucky!!! :)

Joe sorry to hear about your problem with the lipo battery did you have it in a lipo bag or just in the glass jar? If you had it in a lipo bag it moight have not done so much damage. I my self always charge lipo in a bag and stay with the lipo batteries when they are chargeing so I can disconect them right away. At Cabin Fever last week end while chargeing my lipo I had to tell people to stay back and give me some room because one of these batteries could explode especially kids. I guess we all need to live and learn and be more vigilant and not let our guard down when it comes to these batteries. Ed

Lil Giants
04-21-2015, 09:52 PM
Yes, it was on charge. No, not in a lipo bag. I have never dropped a lipo. That 3s looked like brand new, no puffiness to it at all.

It was this charger, though mine doesn't have any brand name stamped on it anywhere.
http://www.hobbypartz.com/thac6smbachw.html

Upon much thought, I'm 99% sure it was operator error, so don't go thinking lipos are unpredictable and unsafe...

1) I know I pulled a 4s lipo off the charger
2) I know I put a 3s in its place to charge
3) I can't remember if I change settings from 4s to 3s... if not?, why didn't the charger alarm sound off for wrong voltage limit?
a) the charger is defective?
b) a full charged 3s might have been placed on wrong side of charger making me think it needed charging, and being full charged would put the voltage within the limits of low voltage on 4s. I don't remember looking at the starting voltage when starting to charge.

I got too complacent charging/using lipos & didn't follow my personal checklist to a "T"!!!

Putting this conveyer on my airdrill has been way more intensive this past week than I thought it be... tomorrow it should be working... I got it home today, hooked up to Big Red & discovered I made a minor mistake in the hydraulic plumbing, just gotta change a couple of fittings. .. another trip to town...

And I got a call mid last week to do some custom wire rolling, 25miles from home. I was told it was less than 2miles of 4 wire, but it turned out to be just about 3miles of 4 wire, about 11actual miles of wire... it had to be done asap - changing landowners, renter didn't want to loose his fence material investment and it had to be done a certain way which made it more work & more time to do. Offloaded Ranger 9am Sunday morning - reloaded 9pm that night... now I was really tired & sore last night & usually an hour or so operating rc's is a great way to wind down & do something pleasureable...helps me sleep better...

A moments inattention just about cost me my house.

I'm still gonna charge lipos out in the shop from now on, in a metal - fire proof box! It takes about 70 minutes for 3s & a 100 minutes for 4s; I'm not gonna sit there & watch each one charge. But I will definitely never forget to follow my checklist at start of charge ever again to be certain everything is exactly as it should be! ;)

I picked up an old wood burner fire place. The inclosed type with a glass door.
needed the high temp glass for my 3d printer bed. (May be an over kill in the glass department)

It's just me but I would never use a lipo charger that doesn't support balancing lead connections. That is just asking for a fire.

avel
04-23-2015, 10:00 AM
I feel better now. I have all my lipos boxed up with my loader and tamiya semi + trailer.
Do you balance charge once every four charges, or something like that?
If you need longer/more balance leads, you can get them on Ebay.

Lil Giants
04-23-2015, 10:41 AM
This charger has balancing connections too. And I balance charge a brand new lipo the 1st 10x, then after that it's occasionally. All 4s lipos are Venom & 3s lipos are Team Enrichpower, whether balanced charge or straight charge, the ending capacity after it's charged has always been the same. And occasionally I'll balance charge to check for any anomalies.

But you're right Cooper... I checked last night after all 4 lipos (two 3s & two 4s) were charged, put a full charge 3s on 4s setting, set it to charge & it began charging a 3s on 4s setting without any alarms... that must have been what I had done Monday night.

I thought about it later, I should try plugging in balance circuit for a charged 3s lipo, then try 4s setting to see if alarms sound off. ;)

It's a great charger Kent. St Louis 2012, Nate brought one to the meet & there was another one there too; those two X4 chargers went hard all weekend charging everyone's batteries without skipping a beat!

Thanx for the tip Avel, the balance wires that come with this charger are like 3" long each... it would be a mini mega project to lengthen them all... hopefully whoever sells them ships internationally. ;)

When I set up my charging cabinet system, each box will be marked 1, 2, 3 & 4 to correspond with charger display and charge port #4 will be 4s only, as it's only the JD850 uses 4s. Nevertheless, I'll be watching carefully every time I start a charge & triple checking all settings are correct for what lipo is being charged. ;)

Cooper
04-23-2015, 12:07 PM
You are right joe not every time needs to run full balance. But,,, most chargers do the balancing at the last 10-5%. I always plug the balance leads in. That is how the charger knows if one cell is high or low. Think of it like if a couple cells are low and one high then the charger is trying to reach a certain voltage but not knowing one cell is high. That's the problem, it may over charge a cell. Without being more elaborate that it in a nutshell. And that is about the only time a battery will catch fire, if over charged.

I'm at work, taking a break and it's snowing!!! WTF????

And if you are using life batteries for your tx/Rx they can be left at full charge state in definately. It will not hurt them like it would a lipo. They are great replacements as their voltage is a little lower like 4AA for radios. And if you over charge them they will just spit out a black powder not catch fire. A little while back I saw a company that had military contracts for lithium based batteries. (Lipo and the sort) they had made a pack that could be shot, or have a nail driven into them and they did not catch fire or even die. They still made useable power. They would not however be able to be charged, kind of oblivious. :). Sometime in the future that technology will trickle down to us. Look on eBay if you do want to get longer balance leads, I hate that every charger company makes long charge cables but always manages to give you a short as possible balance cable!! And for any of you that use military ammo boxes for storing your batteries, good idea to drill a 1/2" hole in it (can put tape over it) that will let pressure out if lid is sealed, they can build up a lot of pressure when sealed up. Pressure = explosion. The hole lets it vent, if for some rare reason one decided to cook off.

Joe, just saw the pics of the lipo fire..wow i am glad it wasn't worse.

A retired friend of mine that i fly planes with just lost a large garage/building to a lipo charging fire.

I have a bunch of 6S batteries for my large heli and i always use the balance lead because like Cooper said if one cell is low or dead the charger won't know it without the balance lead connected and it will just keep charging.

I want to thank all who posted here about lipos I learned a lot just now . Thanks again . Mike

Posting my screw-up, I thought I might be setting myself up for a flaming, but more importantly I thought it be educational for every one's benefit too... even a 20yr vet like me in this hobby has an occasionally brain fart that can be expensive or even possibly near fatal.

Glad to see this was a near miss episode and a great reminder for us all. It's when we all share experiences like this that keeps us vigilant and handle batteries with 100% focus.

this might sound crazy but Im thinking some kind of wireless camera or Closed circuit TV in my shop so I could be upstairs watching tv and still have an eye on them?

Yes joe, all the good stuff is fun to learn but the bad stuff is what teaches us!! I admit my location of my multiple batteries could be made better as now if one went it would most likely set off a chain reaction of all :(.

I think lipo batteries are like a crazy mistress , keep them happy and you will have lots of fun with them, treat um bad and they will burn your house down !!! Lol!!

The problem with those balance plugs for me is my dink fingers, easy enough to plug together, but getting them apart again without tearing a wire off. Balance plugs will definitely prevent an incident like I had last week.

That was my original idea with the cookie jar Mario when I started with lipo 4yrs ago, my comfy chair is line of sight 6 feet away while I play on the puter or watch TV. ;)

Scared makes you more focused not to screw up Mark, you're welcome. :p

Great analogy RW :D

Cheers Shawn. :)

I've been hauling dirt out all week, get home from working in my dad's yard all day about 7:30 & haul till about 8:45 or so... it's almost pitch black outside, I can't see the B50 backing up across the pile, but the back up cam will still show a picture with a clear view like the sun is still in the sky! The sun light has to be completely gone gone before the b/u cam blacks out.

I'll have to go measure the pile again, I might have surpassed 7cu yd by now in 5wks, I'm just about completely out of dirt to haul, I need some rainy days to replenish the pile. :D

Perhaps by the time I'm done spring planting a goodie box from Germany will have arrived so I can get my pup mobile for B50 & start hauling that pile outside to build up the foundation around lean-to... I got a roofer crew coming sometime June to shingle south side of house & that pile outside is directly below - in their way. I'll get moved what I can, then use the farm FEL to do the rest. :(

If I would have gotten more organized this winter & learned tig welding, maybe I could've would've had my B4206 with belly dumper road train built & be moving two 5gallon pails of earth at a trip :D... next yr's to-do list. ;)

Rain today, possibly snow tomorrow... I finished up yesterday getting all my machinery ready for race day when the sun shines again, looks like next week it may not drop below zero anymore either, hopefully. Last couple yrs I started seeding May 14th, last time I started this early was 2012 & that was a lottery yr across the board; big crops, high quality, top dollar! Here's hoping for a repeat! :)

Joe, I know they make little plastic adapters for balancing plugs. They simply snap on and give you a lot better finger hold without pulling on wires but pulling on connector. They make them specific for 2s, 3s, ect.... Small too, can left on. I'll try and find them and post a pic or link.

Cooper

I went with these... don't need 10, I guess I'll see if a 4s protector will work for 3s too.

So I put in the ebay search "longer lipo balancing wire connections" - got nothing. What would be the correct terminology?

Cooper
04-25-2015, 03:01 PM
I'm pretty sure you can use a larger protector for smaller plug. Just type lipo balancing lead
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xlipo+bala ncing+lead.TRS1&_nkw=lipo+balancing+lead&_sacat=0

Looks like 30cm is the longer ones, should be able to plug multiple extensions into each other to give you longer if needed. Jst-xh (I think) are the more common ends.

Yesterday morning it was snowing from 6 to 11am, then it cleared off... good day to work in the shop... 3pm a province wide blackout to 11:30pm... 3wks staring out a window to pound in the crop - to staring out livingroom window with no power & too wet outside to do anything... what a waste of a day!

So today the sun is shining & I'm gonna have some fun moving the pile outside... but guess what? Suddenly I was popular with visitors - 1 guy looking for durum seed to finish planting, then another stuck in a slough - needs a pull and lastly a health care worker stopped by for a survey...

Looking good Joe. I use up all my patience in the shop. I don't have any left sometimes to use on the RC park so I use a shovel instead of my excavator.lol I admire your dedication to doing all this work using only the models. You buy kits and put them to work, I build things from scratch and then use hand tools to build my play area. I think it averages out.;)

Always enjoy the pictures and videos! Keep em comin!

Joe I have a question for you.I know it's farmland so the soil is very good but I hardly ever see rock in the dirt you dig. How far down can you dig there before you hit a lot of rock or hardpan? There is a lot of rock here and hardpan isn't too far down in most places so it's tough digging even for real equipment. Just curious what it's like there?

Lil Giants
05-20-2015, 01:36 AM
Don't have bedrock here, but do have rock from golfball size to Datsun. Topsoil is about 3 to 6", then it's subsoil or what I would call hardpan. Everything I dig in the basement is subsoil clay, it's like granite till I soften it up with some water... depending on how wet it is, it's either like snott or glue. I had a couple of football sized rocks that I dug out by hand when I was digging in the posts for the walls, they were 20 to 30" below the dirt floor.

The rockpile I have under the stairs, this picture was taken Dec 2008, I haul the rocks out just about every yr, the really big rocks I carry out by hand.

Hi joe-looks like you are working hard and getting a lot done. I have a weird idea if your interested. Could you take your camera on a tractor, 4-wheeler, or some type of slow moving vehicle an give us a tour of your farm? Not sure about anyone else but I would like to see that. Alabama has lots and lots of farmland but these days most of it is just lying dormant. I think these farmers realize they can get more money from the gov. by not planting. Not sure what is going on, I just know that not much is being grown in Al. If you don't have time-not a problem

Thanks a lot joe- you have a really nice place and BIG!!! Approx. how many acres do you plant? I remember when I was a kid I would go stay with my grandfather on his farm and go to the fields with him daily to watch him plow with his-2-horsepower set-up (2-mules) and he would plow all day and spread fertilizer by hand. My how things have changed.

Just short of 3500ac, although this yr I decided to chem fallow 300ac b/c one particular field I had a lot trouble harvesting last Fall. Heavy crop of winter wheat, too much rain on it, a lot of it twisted up & went down, made it difficult to cut, it's just a woven mat of straw this Spring that would be difficult to get the airdrill through without making a big mess. I have a couple of thousand ac of tame & native grass pastures too that I rent out now that I don't have cows anymore. Part of the agreement I have with renters is I maintain all the barbed wire fence, about 20 miles worth... which is what I'm doing now being done with spring planting. Renters will be putting their cows in June 1st.

So late this afternoon I took some time to put the Lil Giants to work, the 450 digging a hole so its big brother could come out & play too. :D I need the hole so I can get the boom low enough to clear the window opening.

I tapped into the hyd hoses that lift/lower the B50 box, but with a separate valve on the pup I can operate both dump boxes independently from each other. To operate pup I use Aux 1 (3pos) & pull down B50 box ch (throttle) to supply oil flow to pup valve.

Moving the tank just 6 inches isn't a simple task unfortunately, it's all solid metal piping going into the basement & tank is half full at the moment too. :( Oh well, I got another dirt pile out in the trees, north of shop that the B50 & pup will haul from to landscape the north side of the building. ;)

If you're wondering how the hyds are hooked up? I just tee'd right into the hyd lines that go to the dump cyls for B50 dump box. Pull down stick (lowers B50 box) to circulate oil flow to valve on pup & operate 3pos switch (Aux 1) on radio.

Last night I tore into the ol' JD dozer to figure out what the problem was with one of the track motors, a couple of broken spur gears, easy fix - it's running again. Izzybilt dozer has been working great to level windrows from bellydumps, but the angle should spread better... it's been yrs since I last run this dozer!

Off to work! :D

Bringing up another model I haven't seen for a while, your Mamouth tipper truck. The last video I saw of it, it looked like your bed dumped without turning the steering all the way left. Did I miss somewhere in your threads that you upgraded the control and ditched the +1 system that Tamiya used. I have one and I ordered the FS-GT3B 2.4G tx/rx for mine. Just waiting for it to come in. Hoping I can figure out the swap.

It only took me 20yrs to get where I am today Chris, with a few hiccups along the way. ;)

Tom, when I use the B50 & pup to do north side, I'll dump both boxes on the fly to spread the dirt. Won't need to do much dozing & the B50/pup will do a great job packing as well. ;)

Wiskybilt, I'm using a 4ch FM radio with that Mammoth & still use the +1 control unit too so the limit switches are still in play for up/down stops. The dump is on a separate ch from steering. I'll have to look tomorrow how I plugged the rx leads into rx... I can dump on the move, but not at full throttle or dump will stop.

Wiskybilt
05-30-2015, 08:31 AM
What do you use the 4th channel for? Example: I was thinking 1 - for/rev, 2 - left/right, 3 - up/down

Lil Giants
05-30-2015, 02:43 PM
Steering servo plugs directly into rx. Throttle plugs into +1 unit & the corresponding lead out goes into rx for for/rev. The other lead from +1 unit goes into rx to operate dump.

Don't need 4chs, it's just a radio I had on hand to use.

When little kids come with their parents to see my layout, I give them this trk to run around with, it's virtually indestructible & easy to drive. When they try to drive somewhere they shouldn't & do something like pull a power turn or ramp it, I holler at them, "drive it like a real one is suppose to or park it!", boy their eyes sure get wide!!! :D

Here's a vid showing the bellydumps last night... weather not so friendly again. :(

Definitely looks fun Joe, those fines are not conducive to traction! How many runs can you make before you have to get the dozer out? Hope to see some video of the JD running, I don't believe I've seen that one before. :)

About a dozen loads Kent. There's one vid of the JD dozer I made, the right track gearbox was making a horrific noise (sounds like RCP's KW :D) & then the dozer quit moving, I hadn't run it again till now. I still got more wrenching to do on it, gotta change the gearing as it runs way too slow atm. And I think a new blade is needed too, current one made from aluminum doesn't have the right curve in the blade, nor cutting edge to roll the dirt smoothly.

https://youtu.be/AKer7cnNC_4

Yeah it's funny cracking the whip on them kids, straighten 'em out right away to run like a pro. I wink & smirk at the parents, they bite their lip to keep from laughing & the kids take it so seriously not to screw up or loose their driving job. ;) :D

Cold, windy & now drizzling, no fun outside today. :( So I made a trip to the city to return my conveyer from the airdrill for a refund, it didn't last the season before blowing up! While in the city I got me a hauler for the JD850... either it takes 10 minutes to walk it out of the shop to the dirt pile or strain my lower back to get it out there quickly... now I got this. :D

Good progress Joe, I am enjoying reading your regular updates. The 850 and B50 are working well as a team! Do you use the 450 much?

Is there a reason for piling the dirt down the sides of your workshop or is it just to clear the pile?

Lil Giants
06-07-2015, 01:19 PM
I use the 450 on occasion, but I like the 850 much more.

I put the dirt along the shop to fill the air gap & seal the interior of the building from the outside elements. The back of shop & lean-to will never be cement.

Pile getting smaller everyday.

Lil Giants
06-11-2015, 09:52 PM
No. That's my hotrod Duramax, it's an 09 that I got the spring of 12. The trk in the foreground is a 10 & it's gas, I got it last spring. It's my beater for around the farm. I don't drive the 09 too often, just when I need to haul something on the gooseneck or go on vacation. I took the 09 to St. Louis in Oct 2012, avg about 23mpg imperial ga. The 10 does half that beating around the farm... I took the 10 to Calgary for xmas & got about 17mpg. Park the 09 for the winter, don't want to start it in such cold weather nor drive it through slushy salt.

Lil Giants

Can't remember the last time I had to put a wrench on the 850, it's been a while! There's getting to be a wee bit of movement on the left side of boom pivot... I don't think my mini mill is big enough to mount up the boom to bore a new hole for a bushing.

Well Joe you can't say you did not get any use out of it. If you are getting slop in the bushing you should put brass sleves in and you might get away with just reaming the holes for the sleves. I hope you don't have any trouble getting that broken rod end out just in case you forget heat that a little it probably has lock tight on it. Ed

Farm work is getting less & less with each hail storm this summer, #4 rolled through this afternoon with approximate 20mm diameter stones... amazingly it didn't dent my vehicles at all or break any windows in the house or shop, but it's 100% damage on more than half the farm. Pretty much the entire farm has seen hail this yr, which is a 1st in my 30yrs being here. Uncertain at this point if it will be a quick harvest or a long drawn out event, but it definitely won't be plentiful.

Getting this shop buttoned up & in full working order, as well as a new dig site to start will be a great distraction for sure. ;)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/003_zpspopbqk8r.jpg

The last couple of cubes at the back of shop (north end), still needs more dirt to elevate the grade, probably won't happen this yr.

Anyways... moving back inside, out of the elements & the bugs!!! YAY!!! :D

Here's the official start of the Lil Big Dig tunnel project.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/008_zpsldbw4ivk.jpg

For now, the dug dirt will be dumped & levelled into the north end of lean-to to level the grade, as it drops a little over a foot at the north end... short haul!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/009_zpsakqpresd.jpg

If I recall my calculations from last yr correctly, this other back room needs just over 20cy to bring it up to level with the cement of the middle room. Pretty much all the dirt from the tunnel will fill these two rooms, won't be much to haul out, if any.

...I was originally going to mount them on the Fumotec WA 500 loader, that I haven't built yet, the axle profile is a wee bit different, so I have to machine 12mm width collar so I can position the cleaner bar exactly so... got one wheel mounted so far, hopefully get some time this week to get the other three buttoned up & get busy packing.

I got this drawbar packer from Dieselchopper last October while attending the Model Engineering show in Estevan. I tried to pull it with the 4206 with just rubber tires & it just sat & spun, the packer is that heavy to pull. Now with 10# packer wheel on each corner, should be no problem! ;)

Anyways, about a month away from harvest, lots of hail from mid June to mid July creating delays, but lots to do to get ready. Plus I don't want dirt piles in the electrician's way while he installs lights & plugins, hopefully he shows up in the next week to get that done.

Joe-I like that panoramic picture. Your north & south etc. directions is what gets me confused but that's okay. I will just watch your progress and I am sure you have it planned out perfectly. Could you explain a little about how the digging will proceed. I don't think excavators do too well on a flat wall (do they) or will you dig down and then move and dig down again. I like the packer wheels and the pull packer. Those should do a good job.

Should be a good job for the company, and keep those Union guys running your equipment happy!! :) keep the pics of the new build coming.

Tom, the length of the house is east/west & the length of the shop is north/south, exiting the SE corner of the shop into the NW corner of the house.
I'll dig down about 16 inches below the cement & then all the way across till I get to the basement, then dig down to the 7ft level in layers. On the to do list will be a water tanker body on the back of the green GL with a remotely operated water cannon to keep the face of the wall moist as I dig across. I think the ripper tooth & dig bucket of JD850 will do fine.

Rob, Lou's visit wasn't 24hrs even, had just barely enough time to give him a quick tour.

Got a few projects in the works Emil & a good area now to get 'em done.

No kidding Kent, didn't take long to use up 48ft! Gotta do some more shelving & organizing.

It was quite enjoyable to be in there last winter Cooper, and now with a dig project in there too, perfect!

The width of the packer is surprisingly just right Shawn, it fills the gap between the packer drives, almost like it was planned! :D

That'd be great to have you stop by Steve. Having a bit of trouble with the packer wheels, the grass roots in soil & the dirt being so wet, it's clogging up in the cleaners & forcing the inside cleaner holder to turn on the axle. Got to take it apart & add more set screws. But otherwise it's doing a great job packing! I walk on it afterwards & hardly leave a print.

The drawbar packer, the cleaners are a little tight, fine grit or small rocks will cause in to jam. The clay dirt is quite moist & sticky.

Lou & I too old & tired to go looking for such trouble Greg. ;) :p

I made an offer on Ari's a couple yrs ago, but he never got back to me. :(

I did a lil combining yesterday, 20ac haha, got another 10ac to do next week when it ripens, but other than that I have an unusual amount of free time this time of yr, which I have been soaking up with this tunnel dig. Just about done the 1st cut, go back to that 3rd post, then cut the entry ramp and start on the next 14" cut.

Left rear wheel on the B50 stopped turning last night... tear the rear axle down & narrowed the problem to the brushless motor failing  I got a spare brushless motor/gearhead from the loader kit I haven't built yet, esc must be fine b/c motor replacement runs smooth... good to have spare parts! :D

Looks like your work is progressing nicely joe-I thought the brushless motors were a little more dependable than the brushed motors. Did you have a lot of hours on it?

Lil Giants

I'm sure I have surpassed the 500 loads mark with it already Tom, and 300+ were climbing the steep grade out of my basement this Spring. The B50 has become as much of a necessity as the JD850, when it quits - everything stops & I fix the trk right away, no substitutes! :)

But same day after above pics taken, I hauled 3 loads & then entire rear axle stops working... wt? tear it down again to discover that I didn't get the wires pulled & secured tight enough & the outrunners cut the red motor wires. One motor was a quick fix, the other one - the new one I just put in, smoked the motor & esc too.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/001_zps45ujvh18.jpg

So I did something a little different so that wouldn't happen again.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v150/protrker/Jan%2015/003_zpsrgzwj8no.jpg

Most of Sunday spent wrenching on the B50, but it's working fine again.

Just about finished top cut... the distance between these two posts, the grass roots are more abundant & when spread & packed, the roots & sticky clay is clogging the cleaners bad! I gotta take the cleaners off to get that crap out!

Piling the contaminated dirt off to side here for now & haul it outside later.

Since Sunday I've gotten about 50 new subs on youtube, so I wondered where the media source was coming from this time... thanx for the tip Chris. ;) Reading the article... "9 cubic feet annually" I left a short comment.

Last night I cut the entry ramp to the lower level... I still got about 4 days or more before I can hit the field, I'm starting to vibrate b/c so many combines going around me & my crop just won't mature! This rc hobby has been a great escape from reality, especially this yr with so much bad weather.
