Thanks, I have no experience in anything else other than fusion 360. But I do think it is fairly easy to figure out/learn and most of all free!!!!!

Started making the mold for tires. I’m using a five gallon bucket cut up for the mold walls. And this is just one half with the printed master tire in it. Have to make other half then will be able to cast tires.

Printed a test piece to give me an idea of range of hydraulic cylinder travel. And this piece is going to be 3 different setups , top, bottom and slots on sides. At least this time I am designing with capiablities of macheing in mind and also with the cutters I have. :)

One hour to print that part, had to slice it in half due to printer size , then just glued together. Having the printer is nice because I can make a physical part that I can wrap my brain around to see just how it is going to fit/work. And basically penny’s worth of material. Verses making it in machine and realizing a change is needed having to make a new one. I’m still fighting with my old habits of keeping everything in my head verses using the computer and knowing it will work 99.9% of the time. ;). Ya can take me out of the sunlight but my neck is still red!! Lol!!! I wouldn’t know what to do if everything fit correct the first time :).

Lol!! That was some brass soldered together to hold the master tire when I gave it an acetone bath (vapor bath, about 30-45 seconds to smooth out print lines and sanding marks). Then I bent it up and told the wife I made her a hair brush,,, She wasn’t impressed!! Lol!!

Back to work,,, top half of tire mold poured. Have to wait till tomorrow to take apart and cut casting holes and cast first tire. Have an idea of how much black pigment to add from making the haul truck tires. But not exact. Hopefully I nail it on first one cuz material ain’t cheep. And I’m casting them a solid tire shore hardness of 40, same as haul truck tires. Too much work to make them hollow verses cost savings.

Couldn’t wait so I peeled open mold to see how tire looks,, some small air bubbles but this is the backside of tire so they will not be visiable. And hopefully the next ones will be better. I really was using this tire to test amount of pigment added. Looks good in that respect. The air bubbles are difficult to exterminate with this type of tire design and mold. And from using this material before I don’t have much time to use it. Set up time is 5-7 minuets. Sounds like long enough but by the time you thoroughly mix it then the time it takes to pour in small holes , and the reality of it thickening around 3-5 minuets, tilting and shakeing to get trapped air out goes quick. And from experience I don’t have enough time to mix it then vacuum degass it then pour. So it is what it is. Guess that’s why the pros that make these custom are $$. Put the mold back together and will let sit till tomorrow.

That's a huge tire.

If you can make more of a funnel on the fill side, try pouring from higher above the mold, it stretches the material more and helps break up bubbles before they can make it into the mold. It's not vaccum degas, or vaccum bagging before sticking in an autoclave, but it helps.

And tires came out pretty well, could have used one or two more drops of black pigment, u see some light they appear grey. It may be me over looking at them too :).

They still have some mold release on them so appear to be shiney. And stil a bit soft as I haven’t post cured them yet. I actually read directions this time around and best to leave in mold for 18-24 hours then bake at 150 degrees for 2-4 hours. Looks like I’m having roast tires for dinner the rest of this week!! Can’t wait till the wife asks “what’s in the ove??” But she’s been around enough to know ,,,,,,

Order is a little random (posting with phone) but the rear counterweight is pinned and bolted together. More work will be done to that big piece but I wanted it to be solid as it’s going to be a point of lifting with your hand. And the brass piece is a hinge that will enable rear crowl to be tilted to access battery.

Working on bucket next. It is posing to be way more complex than I originally thought. Details and workholding for machineing are a constant concern while trying to figure out how to make the parts the most user friendly way possible. But I think the bucket is a big eye magnet so trying to accomplish that :). And starting to get things around for the upcoming cabin fever event !!!!!

Ken, you were missed :(. But I understand. Good show this year , great turn out. Talked to the great folks at tormach and they were happy to see the parts made with their machines. I also decided to splurge for the full enclosure. I’ve started to cut a lot of steel and steel chips on the floor are not my favorite so I went for the enclosure. Looks like a full day of building it! Well a big LEGO/erector set :).

Yes bucket is going to be over 13" wide, 13.75? Forget exact but somewhere around that. And agree with that statement about going to be done by cabin fever,,,, sometimes I think I would have been a lot further along doing it the old way, on paper sketches and in my head. :). I did not realize how much I would have to learn and put to practical use. To tell ya the truth, the machineing part is pretty simple and efficient. I still stand there and watch because I'm still amazed how the machine moves.:lol: the majority of time is spent in front of the computer. I'm getting fairly efficient in the design and the cam programming. But the think ahead about size/shape of raw material. How much the cost is and how to hold and work the parts. That is what takes a lot of time and research. like right now I'm working on bucket sides. Raw stock is 6" by 3'. Need to cut 6"x5" plates. Hold them in vise to drill fixture mounting holes. Then make a fixture with those holes. Machine top and sides then flip over to machine bottom side. I'm doing it this way because I can get .25" thick stock and part is .25" thick. And for these parts any discrepancy in raw material thickness is negligible , maybe a couple thousands. And I'm a firm believer in running simulations in computer. Always have to check and recheck that cutters and motions of machine are doing what they should be. And now I've been cutting steel I've had to figure out correct feeds and speeds. All in all I've broken about a dozen tools. Mostly 1/8" stuff and mostly under 15-20$. Still cheaper than a local semester of machineing classes. And university of YouTube is a quicker learning practical application. Every time I think about attending a school by the next day I've figured it out. I really don't like learning but I like making this stuff more so that wins out :).

Had to do some re-wire of controller , directions well and it’s nice how they have every wire labeled. No problems

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/RC%20construction/8298092B-52A2-4D20-AF47-AC4C2DD85EF8_zpso0xq8uew.jpg (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/cooperford/media/RC%20construction/8298092B-52A2-4D20-AF47-AC4C2DD85EF8_zpso0xq8uew.jpg.html)

Added daylight led bulbs, really added good lighting to workpieces. I also wired a switch that I can access easily that allows me to use mist or flood coolant. I could use an interface that adds the proper m codes but the switch was easier for me. Coolant is still turned on and off with program. Now all the potential steel splinters and aluminum chips that the cat likes to eat will be contained. So back to cutting parts, working on teeth for the bucket and I will post some progress pics when I get some more done.

She just saw it for first time, and no animal add-ons were discussed . I just don’t think she thought of that,,,,yet,,, but this should only equate to say,,, a hampster. :). Lol!!!

I think I have all lights in house switched over to led bulbs. Definitely more efficient but my big thing was they run so much cooler than regular filiment bulbs. Had our house burn down when I was younger from a light left on that overheated. And it’s amazing the color differences you can get from lights now:).

Yea my little dogs love to use the chips around my mills and saws for their own personal litter box.

I have to watch one of my dogs because she likes to hide food that is not regulation size for a Pomeranian. The tell tale giveaway is powdered aluminum dust on her muzzle.

Coop, if you are welding steel, have you considered aluminum bronze filler metal? I’ve been wanting to try tig brazing myself but am mostly working aluminum...

My only concern is my lack of experience tig welding thin to thick steel. If I was going to braze it I'll just tig it. Knowing my abilities I can mig weld thin stuff better than brazing or tigging. I'm even hesitant on soldering it. I just know from my past experiences (or lack of) even heating the thin gauge metal to solder I get some warping in sheet parts. I know it's just my lack of experience and I should devote a day or so to cooking some scrap pieces,,, I'm sure after I warp a few more critical parts I will probably do that :)!!!

And I've used heat absorbing material and heatsinks, just haven't done it enough??? :)

I still have a few structural spots to weld up and clean some up but it’s together. Also the silver aluminum parts that are bolted together between the attachment braces are just there for fuxtuerimg. I cut spacers to length and have a straight rod connecting one side to other to keep things square.

What bore diameters?

Why not double O rings on pistons?

What bore diameters?

Why not double O rings on pistons?

Lift cylinders are .805” calculations are @ 300psi 153# pushing and 130# pull

@ 250 psi it’s 127# and 108#. Now that is the theoretical force from cylinders not the actual force at tip of bucket teeth. Shooting for it to be able to lift whatever heavy object that fits in bucket. 👍🏼👍🏼

I just decided to use one o-ring on pistons because I don’t see the need for 2. I haven’t had many hydraulic problems on past built cylinders. I do have two seals in the rod/cylinder head. One more so a dust seal. Tollarances are +.001” larger diameter for rod to pass through. And these cylinders don’t really have the dynamic side loads to keep rod and cylinder in line. And on the steering and lift cylinders the single O-ring gives me that little bit more travel. I’m trying to have lift arms go a bit higher than the 1:1 machines to have dumped bucket clear sideboards on the haul truck. They will but have the room so just some insurance I guess 😜. And like I said I’m using seamless tube that will be honed and polished internally. The rod is ground tight tolerance stock.

How do you determine the size of your O-rings?

Cooper
02-24-2018, 08:20 PM
I use 1/16” orings. Actual size of .063” ring is .070. I cut .063 groove and size off of Inside diameters or outside diameter. Depending on tube or rod. Tube is measured by outside diameter , pipe is measured by inside diameter. I’ve found if you try and compress orings too much they are too tight for a low pressure hydraulic system like we have. Say I have a cylinder rod of .25 I will usually use a oring of .25 inner diameter. And account for the actual size of oring to be the compression. And the groove is the static part the rod is the seal part. I’ll try and find some info I found a while back for you.

Small ring is .063” the larger diameter ring is 1/32” .03125. I would love to use the 1/32 rings but I just can’t hold that tight of tolerance on my lathe. Would make the telescopic cylinders more scale :).

Thank you very much, great information. I've never done hydraulics before but have started on a project that will require me to fabricate my own cylinders as what I need to stay reasonably to scale is not available. I knew that O-rings were made to standardized sizes but no idea how to figure out how much compression was needed to make them work properly. Have you ever tried X or quatro rings? From what I've read on them they can be used as direct replacements for O-rings as they are the same size and could provide a better seal at lower compression or pressure.

Yeah, I can do basic math. ;) :D

So let's figure out the negative leverage ratio to determine how much lifting power you'll have at the bucket's cutting edge.

What's the distance from the hinge point at the rear of the arms to where the cyls connect on the arm?

And what's the distance from cyl's connection on the arm to the bucket's cutting edge (bucket horizontal)?

And yes I changed designs on cylinders. I did make them out of steel but then switched to brass. Several factors at play for that choice. I was using 12l14 steel (high lead content) easy to machine but I didn’t realize it doesn’t like welding or brazing temps much. And also after realizing I’m planing on having several more small pieces added to cylinders for hard lines I would run into heating up parts I don’t want to heat up. With brass I can control the temp better and block the heat transfer easier. And the hard lines will be easier to fabricate withbrass tube. But one benefit, I now have spare parts from steel for future projects !! Lol!!

should have a esc and motor arriving soon. Have the basics of the driveline done. Still need to weld up and some more details. This is a pic of the spider being machined. Did it in the mill then remove from collet block and part off on the lathe. Rotary table would be nice but don’t have one and then setting up for a simple opp,, I’ll keep with the collet blocks for now.

Get a Hardinge HV-4 5C collet indexer. Look on ebay.
You really don't need a rotary table since you have your CNC mill.

Very nice, I like the idea of combining set screws with pins to connect the parts. Using thread lock to keep them from backing out? Also, how did you make the slip joint? Broach?

Yes the two joints , one under front frame and one right before rear pinion are broached keyway joints. With this driveline the universal is centered at articulation joint and the driveline is all on the same plane. So I don't need the driveshaft to slip in or out during use. But if for some reason the joints can be easily modified by only clamping on one end and letting the other float. The keyways are cut to length so keys cannot slip out if need be. I don't see needing any expansion/contraction joint on a one plane driveline, but it will not be know until I get a few more steps done. Hopefully tomorrow after all holiday events are done I'll have it spinning. I still need to cut gears from gearstock. Top and bottom transfer gears are boared and keyed, the two center gears I'm going to cut the shafts all in one with the gearstock. I'm waiting on a better fitting collet to arrive so I can machine the gearstock. I can center it in a 4jaw chuck with some soft shims so not to damage the gear but indicating it would be a pain in but. That's why I am waiting on a better sized collet, then I can use the collet blocks or even just the collet to hold it while lathe work.

Thanks for explanation. I agree that your particular setup doesn't need to slip back and forth during actual use and your two spline setup will work fine. Just noticed it in one of your pictures and was curious as to how you made it. I look forward to seeing the rest of this amazing build. Thanks very much for sharing.

I would assume he is stacking another cup set screw on top of the ones with pins to lock.

Cooper, Get a soft collet and bore it to fit your gear diameter.

Transfer case done along with drive shafts. Also made a attachment plate for mounting motor to gearbox. Waiting on some gearstock to make a one piece coupler from motor to gear inside gearbox. Went with a fairly low kv motor that is sensored for easy start up and soft transfer of power to drivetrain. Using tekin rx8 esc with a 1400kv motor on 3s voltage. That gets a reduction in the gearbox of 4:1, 4:1, 3:1 then into transfer case all 1:1 then into axles with a 3:1 differential. Very similar to the haul truck. I think I used a 1900kv motor on that set up. With this machine I’m more looking for the motor to spin up closer to full speed while keeping machine slow and smooth power.

Oh and another thing I did was to center drill a hole in the pivot joint pins. This will allow to properly align the universal joint with center of articulation. For it to function proper alignment is pretty critical. Straight no problem, :) but would bing during articulation if not lined up.

I have been getting a lot of other projects to pile up, wanting to get this one done and working!! Have a screening plant to build and get this loader running material :). Also have the springtime work to start doing. More life work and less time in shop :(.

I really look forward to watching what you come up with for a screening plant. I would bet it's going to be awsome.

Ha, yeah, had my no-spill oil can vibrate off top of lathe and splatter oil all over,, but after coming to a rest it did not spill any :). Just no smooth cut anyway possible with that. Parting tool made me nervous also :).

And started running hydraulic lines and fittings. This piece I’m using for transitioning from hidden lines to visually lines. Using the frame parts to pass lines through. In the background the same part is installed on loader but doesn’t have threads cut. The small holes are for cover plate to be installed last when I get to body work.

Lol,,, the bottle that holds my leak finder was donated by my wife,,, she has not noticed it missing in the last 5 years!! Lol!! All the times I have old , almost empty windex, some sort of spray bottle and not one around when I needed it !! So next best thing,, although she has been encroaching on my man cave lately,,, may have to make her slightly unhappy with me ,, then she will not invade my space :). But that is a razor blade ,,, just one sliver too much and it backfires!! Lol!! Naa, she’s been pretty supportive of this,, I’m not getting knocked out or any broken bones so she likes me doing this. ;). The texture would have been a bit more detailed but like I said , computer was not making it easy. Maybe next years project will get a computer upgrade.

Uhh, almost ;). Yeah, I definitely did not take into consideration the time spent on learning and computer design!! Hats off to them programmers!! And I’ve had a good bit of time to devote to this so far!! I do have all electronics and hydraulic system set up. Have not found the final resting place for them. Want to wait till I get the back cover somewhat done to decide exactly where everything will live.

Oh and it doesn’t help that I am still amazed by watching the cnc machine so it’s thing,,, it’s supposed to be a time saver and I just watch , mesmerized!! Time not well spent ;)

All the work to your high standard as usual looking great.
The top deck looks great love the finish on it.

You can have the files locally which can remove internet problems I use this feature when travelling with my laptop and fusion
It also protects you from the internet being down.

Cooper

I can run 999,999 lines of code in the mill. The issue I have been encountering is in design software. Well it’s not the design software it’s my hardware. I’ve been finding that my $200 computer has its limitations. It’s been fine for most of what I done so far with fusion 360. But some issues in past that I just assumed were my ignorance are revealing to be processing power of computer. Specifically the gpu or graphics driver. And having a lot of dimensions or model points intensifies the lack of kernels. So I’ve been working around that by using patterns and splitting some operations. Once it gets to the mill I’m good to go. So before long I guess I need to postpone the laptop and get a new desktop. Or a laptop that can handle the requirements. This machineing is a vicious circle of learning, spending, realizing how much I don’t know, having to learn, a bit more spending, more learning, ,,,, but before long I will be able to sit in my lawn chair with cooler next to me , a battery pack and transmitter , hide from the world and play in the dirt !!! That’s my therapy, r&r , vent, that makes it all worth while:)

ed, the mill has its own controller or computer, the computer I use is my desktop that was a cheep home computer, nothing special. I use it for the design and cam generation only. copy to a usb stick and take over to mill and load it to mill computer. sometimes I have noticed the mill controller may not show the correct numbers in the dro field, but that only did it when I had a program with over 300,000 lines of code. program ran fine, I think it was just a display issue.

as far as the computer issue I know my inexpensive desktop is not up to the task of the assembly files I have in fusion 360. so that is where I am , shopping for a more powerful computer to use for design and cam. and now that I have some knowledge of this cnc stuff I realize most of my time is spent on computer, the part I don't like ;) but as I said before when its mill time I stay and watch like an amazed little kid!!

Is that a certi-flat welding table? Been thinking of getting one. How difficult was it to assemble? Stay as flat as they claim?

Cooper
07-01-2018, 03:35 PM
Thanks guys!! Yes it’s a certi-flat table. All laser cut pieces and very little draus to clean up. Assembly is very simple and straightforward. A couple taps with mallet and clamp together then weld the tabs/slots. Pretty clever idea for getting a pretty flat surface. I don’t have anything long enough or accurate enough to inspect the 4’ length of table to see how flat it is. 4’ Carpenters level is closest thing for me and table is probably more flat than level. I also got cheep bar clamps , removed end and welded a 3/4” bolt to bar. The stronghand tools are just nuts in price and cheep bar clamps are fine for what I use to clamp stuff down for welding. Moreso just clamping to weld and not trying to clamp down a warped or bent part. But yes I like it very much and am happy with the table. Kind of wish I got a bigger one :).

Going along very well I see. I like the handrail mounting hardware.
I was looking at a acorn welding table a couple weeks ago. Would have taken it with me but a little too heavy for my box trailer. The table measures: 5' x 6' and weighs 3850# Taking a bigger trailer next trip.
You planning on coming down to Brownsville in August?

Like your clamps, great idea. I agree with you that the cost of the commercial "welding" clamps is insane. I usually buy the cheapest Harbor Freight clamps I can find for welding. Like you, just want to hold parts in alignment. Burn up a HF clamp or three it's no big loss. Also like the handrail ideal. How are you going to attach the stanchions to the pads?

Like your clamps, great idea. I agree with you that the cost of the commercial "welding" clamps is insane. I usually buy the cheapest Harbor Freight clamps I can find for welding. Like you, just want to hold parts in alignment. Burn up a HF clamp or three it's no big loss. Also like the handrail ideal. How are you going to attach the stanchions to the pads?

thanks guys,

zabco, not sure what your referring to on the stanchions and pads? steps? if so industrial aluminum adhesive, (have to keep me in mind, I have no idea what some of the proper names of things are) my self earned degree in redneck engineering keeps me in the stupid simple relm:lol::lol::lol: two left feet and all thumbs sometimes:D

I was referring to the vertical components of your hand rails. Technically rails refer to the horizontal bars and stanchions are the vertical supports. But you answered my question anyway. Thanks and sorry for confusion.

And I have been wanting to make some sort of fixture for this type of work so I finally got around to it. Alum plate and small pieces with a groove in them for standoff’s. If laying flat on steel I risk the chance of soldering to steel plate. Laying on aluminum plate the alum sucks the heat pretty quick. So with the small standoff’s I can quickly heat and solder parts together. Also made clamping bars so I don’t have to worry about de-soldering or bumping existing joints/parts.

Looks great cooper-I cannot imagine how many hours you have in that soldering fixture but it is necessary. When I was building sometimes I felt like I spent more time making special fixtures than working on the model. After this project it will probably sit and gather dust but hey that's what make things interesting. Nice work!!!!

I think the jig took about 30 min machine time. Just a couple to design. Well worth it for future projects.

Finally around to putting some clothes on this chunk of metal!! Was able to take partsup to a friends that has a big blasting cabinet with glass bead material. Really made shortsork of paint prepping. Several days of painting , many parts and several light coats to get good coverage.

Wow man!!! I have not been on in a while due to connectivity issues and the fact that I got super pi**ed off trying to make hydraulic cylinders a few months ago. My old lathe loves to cut a taper when I don't want it to....... Loader is turning out amazing! I feel guilty about my Tormach setting idle so i'm ready to get back in the saddle! I also may or may have not just sent a deposit to Fumotec......What tool are you using to get the "diamond" type pattern on the base of the cab? some type of engraving tool I guess? And what is the smallest endmill you have ran in the 1100? The detail work and lack of fasteners have made for a stunning model!

Cooper

Sorry about late response, only way I access the forum I s from my iPhone and it takes forever if at all to open pages.

Smallest end mill I’ve used so far was a 1/16 4flute. Ran good and still have it. Was cutting the details on cutting edge of bucket. Mild steel. I do take the time to adjust run out on small cutters.

As far as the deck pattern. I used a 1/8” 4flute 90 degree chamfer tool. I think I used a trace toolpath with -.025 stock to leave as a cam programming.

And if you are referring the the offset faces as the diamond pattern on the cab that was just a simple contour with stepover of .005 with a 3/16 ballmill.

Thats going to be a heck of a conveyor system. Are the roller supports 3D printed?

Yes they are printed in three pieces then glued together. The center roller shaft slips into place then the angled roller shafts lock it into place. Rollers are acetal plastic. Just using brass for roller shafts. The parts printed and shafts are very simple and cheep parts. So if they wear it's just a matter of pulling 4 m3 bolts and replacing the whole roller assembly. My plans (in my head) are to have the screen on a 5 degree angle with a hopper that has a short conveyor feeding the screen. Then all along belly of screen another conveyor transporting screened material under hopper to empty into another longer conveyor for spoil pile. Then the material that doesn't pass through screen empty to a conveyor to be piled. The hopper is going to be about 24" wide, wide enough for the haul truck to dump or two regular size dump trucks side by side. More of a quarry processing trommel verses a mobile setup.

Things are just resting on each other. So just some idea if what this is going to look like. A lot more to do, two more conveyors to make. A lot of shrouds and covers. The big hopper to dump into, and I would like to have some sort of vibrating hopper to help with sticky materials.

Yes, well that is the plan :). I'm in the process of building the hopper that trucks can dump into. That short top conveyor will feed into the rotating trommel. I forget the mesh size but what doesn't pass through will get another ride on another separate conveyor that will be detached and positional about 320 degrees. The material that gets sifted through will get a ride along long conveyor passing underneath trommel screen heading to yet another conveyor to the pile or wherever. Have to make the hopper and containment covers yet.

We've got those here in Washington State. The BIG boys use them in their operations. A concrete plant uses one to highpile the aggregates used in the production plant. Theirs is super smart! It not only pivots in the radius, it ALSO self adjusts to length of the conveyer, as well as the angle of the belt.

Another plant, an asphalt recycle plant uses it in their operations to neatly pile the reclaimed material.

I still have to make covers for miter gears, mount for vibratory motor on hopper, and controller wire harness and controls. And then I’ll find out what hidden problems will need addressing. And then possibly know if it will work

Oh and the concept for this is to have a flat elevated dumping area about a 1/2” below hopper side. Trucks will back right up to hopper and dump full load. The haul truck I built will be able to back up and dump full load as well. But it may need to dump slowly depending on how well the amount of material can be processed. Loafers and excavators probably will not be able to keep up fast enough. At least that’s the target concept.

One more part, using 1/8” material for this. When I welded everything together I had some slight distortion on the screen roller. Had to cut the support rails to release the strain. I needed to make a shield at end anyway so make it out of 1/8” material instead or .063”. Taped down part for cutting. Will weld the two pieces together as that was what I had on hand.

That's looking like a severe workhorse. What material are you using for the belt material. Had did you connect the ends of the belts together? I'm working on a much smaller version of this. Mine shall be fed by an excavator. I'm thinking the hoe feeds the grizzly, & what passes through the grizzly then goes through the screen plant. Mine is still in the drawing phases. I'm working on it with a friend that has the ability to machine the custom parts necessary to make it a reality.

I just watched an episode of gold rush (or something like that) and a guy had a trommel named dirt Reynolds,,, so I found a good name. “Joe dirt” :)

Skeeter, I am using an urethane rubber for the belt. I’ll see if I can get you part number from McMaster. It is specific for conveyors. I could get it in 4” width and x length. As far as lacing the belt, my old sewing machine. Nylon thread. But it can be heat welded. I’ve tested that but I don’t have a heat welder just heat gun and my test pieces got abit warped. It works well just need to make some heated pliers or torch clamps. It’s not know how the longevity of the belt material will hold up. On the discharge conver of the fine material I think no problem. On the input conveyor in the hopper I need to find out. That’s where rocks/sharps will be present. If not good there I’ll just use a straight roller system and other material. Reason I choose this material was overall thickness that will allow the belting to conform to “u” shaped roller assemblies

This adds rigidity to the roller beam but allows a little side wobble to keep tune in rollers.

And cut some vinyl decals for the name

I'd be much obliged for the part number. We've got conveyer projects in teh works now. NOT for feeding trommels we'll use them for. Rather than feed trommel, we shall use them to feed shaker screen decks..................well, we hope to, if we can get everything in working order.

Do a rectangular frame above the screw bosses then rectangular pocket with a larger diameter milling cutter just inside of the bosses, then go back and profile the bosses with smaller endmill .

On the tool paths; Start by making a rectangular FRAME above your screw bosses depth and inner wall then make a rectangular POCKET to final depth a little smaller than the bosses using a larger end mill. Go back and profile the bosses to depth with the smaller tool you desire to clean out the corner radii.

I understand what you said Steve, thank you. So many things to remember and to keep in mind. I also found out I can drive tool paths off of a sketch. Say I wanted a point in middle and to radiate outward/ inward. Cam will recognize part and not violate part but drive paths according. This is like endless learning!!! And to think that I can honestly say I have never read a book!! Well at least cover to cover an not skipping pages, chapters,,, lol!! Although I have got to get a machinist book,,,,

I also decided to cut up the remainder of an old treadmill belt I had. I'm just not happy with the polyurethane rubber. It being so thin, good to conform to roller assemblies, but it also wants to curl up and flip onto itself at end roller/drive roller. (Sometimes). It's .03" thick, non backed. Wish I could find single ply treadmill belting 4" wide and a roll 10'. Normally called a walking belt being single ply. Then I would not have to try and cut a straight line 10' long. Always little tweaks and suprizes popping up. Trying to make this thing idiot proof!! Lol!!!

Oh and drive/free rollers have vertical sidewalls about .35" and a small taper at top to help belt track. Although I could put some super thin Teflon tape around free roller to help it slide(to keep centered) the drive roller is knurled for grip.

RW I have the tool to splice the urethane belts together. It' basically a soldering iron with a flat plate.

I have some thin rubber with cloth conveyor belting that I got a piece from McMaster that is 1/16'' thick . It looked good so I ordered a few feet from a company here in Pittsburgh called Conviber. I plan on using the Clipper type lacing to join it together.

Works nicely. Maybe we can feed the crushed limestone through it from my crusher.

I almost stopped in yesterday but customer was 2hrs late meeting me at the Columbia Mall. He got a DOT check coming into PA around Scranton.

After the delay I needed to get over to my camp near Punxy before dark to fix some roof leaks on one of my sea containers.

A side project that I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. I’m making a valve body that will allow use of m5x6mm hose fittings. The valve body is shown above, I still need to grind and lap the surface. Been wanting this for the projects that require more flow. The permacon valve ports are .063” and I’m making these .125” basically doubled the flow (I know for those that are hydro dynamics the flow is not exactly doubled but will be a considerable increase. ).

And for those that wanted to see some videos of the trommel working at the last event, cabin fever, my weekend was cut short due to bad weather. I had things in place to be handled but with the amount of snow and then rain, and everything freezing I had to take care of business. So if anyone does have video of the event , by all means share :). I had a great time and Sunday was the day I was planning on taking the time to get some pics and videos. And for those new faces , happy to have met you and for those that I didn’t I’ll be looking forward to a time I do.

pie x r squared

The math works out to nearly 4x (3.69) the volume increase of 0.065 to 0.125

Martin Meinhardt (the original maker of the rotary valves that Premacon copied) does offer a larger valve, though I don't know how much larger. Fumotec could get it for you. I could nail the info for you, if you want?

Carry on with your version, it'll be exciting to see you accomplish this too. ;)

Thanks joe, you know me, I'm always doing the things the hard way, look at it, study it, think about it, build it, then realize why it doesn't work, then read some info pertaining to it, then figure out how to make it work. :).

The hard part for me is trying to figure out how to machine it , keeping in mind mating surfaces and allowing for surfaceing. (Also with dimensions of applicable materials that I have or easily obtain. Trying to keep my tollarances of +\- .001. That's on the radial side of things. Axial sides should a lapped surface.

As far as flow increase, the fittings are still less than .125". But larger than the 4mm hose fittings. I didn't take exact measurements of them but that will be the smallest diameter that oil passes. That's why I just redneck engineered (eyeballed) my non existent math ;). And similar to original valve all mating surfaces get an o ring for sealing. The valve and valve housing is where I need to get a tight fit. I plan on making the rotary valve part one piece, nesting it inside the housing and then surface grinding. Probably going to use the parts against each other to achieve a lapped fit. (Only for the top of rotary valve and valve housing. Then flip them into a fixture and surface both parts to achieve exact same heights. At least it looks that way from the back of my eyelids ;).

Still need to cut the outside profile. This part Cost me a 1/16” endmill, not sure why it broke but some tweaking and still cutting other parts without breakage. I’ve realized a good start is to check run out on the smaller end mills. Got it down to less than .0002”. At least that’s as close as my eyes can read a .0005” indicator. Again this hobby has become an endless pit of learning. Sometimes it’s fun other times it’s rum-n-coke time to make it fun!! ;).

Forgot one. Since I’ve been (semi) accurately measuring tools my tollarances have increased and re-machineing has decreased. First try nailed the .752” diameter I was shooting for. This I.d. Is milled so not a 100% round hole but doesn’t need to be. Some clearance for rotary valve to rotate.

RW, how did they conveyor belts do at the show? How many hours were places upon them? Were there any issues withe the 3D printed belt supports, or the rollers?

Cooper
02-18-2019, 12:01 PM
I had to leave early from the show but it ran almost non stop Friday, some Thursday and some Saturday morning. No issues. The printed belt supports were proven to run without issues from an older conveyor I had. Haven’t had one wear out yet. But if they do I would assume the supports would go first, acetal rollers with brass shafts. The side rollers nest up against the abs printed supports. That’s where contact mostly is. And that’s where the wear would occur.

Thank-you sir for the reply. I was thinking of doign similar for a conveyer, but wasn't sure the 3D printed parts would hold up well enough to the weight from the material. Your system is larger than the one I'll be building. Since they work well on your belt, I'm certain they will suffice on a 3inch wide belt. Thanks again, coop, for the info & help.

This is the worksite. Raised flowerbeds along house walls are being removed. The small slab of concrete will be removed also. Im going to dig a ditch underneath of that concrete (along that wall to install rain gutter drain. And then pavers will be laid up to house walls. The paver bricks that are down now are being pulled and re-leveled. So this may keep the company afloat for spring and into summer :).

Yes, I did video several clips. I'm trying to figure out a video making software. Cutting a bunch of videos into one is always better for viewing. Gets rid of the non action empty parts. But,,, it's yet another thing to mess with and I have no enjoyment setting at the computer. So as I progress with that I will be uploading some video soon. I am also in the process of changing all my mix and match radios over to spektrum rx/tx. I do very much like the trannis from frsky but after going over all the aspects with models (construction equipment, trucks, rock crawlers, scale truck, and a couple small park flier airplanes ) having one radio system to program and swap equipment I decided to go with sprectrum. It's going to be a little more expensive, I would like to have the major stuff like loader, haul truck, dozer, ect,, dedicated to one radio each. That also allows me to have multiple radios in case something happens to one I'm not completely out. Can just have some sd cards with models saved to swap in one radio or another. Most of the models will be on a dx9 and some with dx12. And more people are using spektrum that I know so if I need help with something I can get it.

I'm talking with some one at photobucket currently to see if preset pic size outgoing links option is coming back or not... I started a $50/yr subscription with them in January... if that one particular option is never available again, then I'll be cancelling.

I have been using this 3rd host when the photobucket blackout had occurred... totally free & simple to use... can be a lil confusing when uploading several pics as the pics & links do not pair together... you'll see what I mean if you try it.

I've been using Windows Live Movie Maker for years to edit videos, pretty simple to use without too to many excessive options to pick from. It came preloaded on my laptop.

I as well use Windows Movie Maker for editing videos. It's simple & easy to use. The one thing I do know for certain about it.......................Do the WHOLE editing phase of videos in ONE shot. If you save the video then edit it& repeat process several times, the video quality suffers! The newer vids on my YT channel have had the editing complete at one time. The new vids are much cleaner images to watch.

It’s been a little bit since I have been able to sit down and do a little rc and relaxing!! Have been busy with work, spring is always a busy time , and I have been busy on redoing the back porch. Found an old septic tank during demo on small concrete porch. 3 by 5’ slab so just hand pounding with sledge and prybar. Was stoped by hearing a splash,, odd,, found out I was beating on top of an old 10’ wide by 15’ deep septic tank that had an old slate lid covering the 10’ span. Partly under foundation of addition that had knob n tune wires, so to say old. Then the old hand well. I got 28 ton of stone and only about six skid steer buckets left!! Would have loved to use the rc equipment but didn’t want to have a 15’ and 30’ hole open for any more time than needed. And rain has been constant this year but I’m finally to a point I am starting to get some time, and need a few hours sitting and relaxing with the rc stuff. So hopefully I’ll get some more videos soon. !!!

He has been sad, keeps looking around for the wolfhound, we had to put ira, the Irish wolfhound down last Monday. All good, well it’s tough but he was over ten years old and well I can’t let it get to me as he was very healthy up until recently, just his time.

Great to see you doing well Cooper & finally getting your barn project underway, looks like a great setup for rainy days, will it be operational in winter months too?

Sorry to hear about beloved pet.

I’m thinking it’s going to be a 3 season area for now. Eventually some more work to the barn basement in regards to heating. Plans are to get it to where it stays above freezing during the winter. But I will be stockpiling dirt and materials to stay dry and useable during some warmer winter days.

I love the paver project. Think how many more 1/14 man hours it would have taken doing that by hand!

Sorry to hear about the pup, that always sucks
