Joe, the future tree stump dig is located just on the other side of fence, about inline of dogs nose and right of tree. I want to move the fence out to edge of property line, about another 20' out. Then I can build a road to stump. And tossed a hand trowel for size comparison of stump. I'm sure when wife goes looking for it she will never look there:).

Phew! Big job moving that fence! My Wheatheart post pounder would make quick work driving new 8'L - 8" dia posts. ;)
You're probably looking at an 8' dig radius, down 3' and then building some kind of motorised circular saw blade attachment for the hoe... can't cut the roots with a chainsaw or an axe, that'd be too easy! :D :p
That'd be a good sized job for the JD850, good luck with your lil kitty cat, don't break it. :D :p

Lol!! Got the skid steer and post hole auger for the fence. Only corners and gate are concreted. However I will have to get new lumber.
The stump has been sitting dormate for about 3 years, maybe more. I cut down into it with 16" chainsaw and added root rot. But I'm sure even the small roots will be problems. Yes I'm planning on it being the big summer toy project. Might be able to drag it out for next year too if considering filling in hole too!! I guess it would be a ill attempt at attaching a stump grinder on end of hoe? :) !!!!

Do you drill a smaller hole than post & push them in with skid steer? You could probably rent a pounder that mounts right on your skid steer - no tamping, no hole prep, just drive it home! You get a 10' - 10"d post, drive it in 5', you wouldn't need concrete. I do my 4 wire fencing corners with this big of post & have never had one come out of the ground, some fence is now 10yo.

The fence is just to keep the livestock (dogs ) in. I think I have 14-18 posts to set. All the property in background is mine as well but if this property was sold off the fence line is marker. That fence is probably 15+ now. Not bad for rough cut hemlock. Posts are treated. I have a 6" auger to dig 4x4 posts. Maybe a half hour job diggin. More time running tape measure and leveling posts. Ground is soft on low side, that's also gonna be a property marker so only reason I was gonna add a bag of sacrete to them. Where I have a gate big enough to drive equipment into if ever needed I used 4x6 and they are 3' deep. Old Amish man once told me to use a hatchet and cut notches in corners (like a barb) below ground line to help with lifting from frost heaving. He might have been pulling my leg too:). Around here depending on snow cover , realistically frost might get 6-8 deep in good soil, hard clay/shale deeper. However not to underestimate power of frost, I have several sewer lines to dig up. They are future lines stemming off main line. About 4 feet deep 4" slip joints that frost has pulled up out of ground. Those slip joints are not easy to fit in and worse to take apart!!
But the fence job should only take the better part of day to do , if I get around to it and finally get more boards. At least I'm pretty sure I can make it take a day:).

Ok just did a check on scale weight of what the cat should be
The 1:1 catd11 weighs in at 230,581 pounds, now if I'm building a 1:14 scale model the model weight would be 16,470 pounds!! (Dozer weight divided by 14 scale ). That would be one heavy toy!!!!
Lil Giants
04-25-2015, 08:10 PM
It terms of length, it's /14. But weight or volume, it's cubed, which would equal 84lbs... and you're what? 68lbs?
Bo Wallen

Hmmm. Thinking Just a little bit more weight on the model. Like 84 pound should be the number......84 x 14 x 14 x 14 = 230496 pounds . Love the new Blade Sir. ;-)

Haven't had as much time as I would like to devote to my construction company and equipment,,, have to do some real work to keep the collectors away!! The new blade manufacturing process has been painfully slow but I did get the tilt cylinder mounts done so now I can figure out the proper attitude for main push arms.

Thanks Bo, I knew something was amiss!! Didn't know cubed scale weight. I forget what the actual weight is, I know at some point in past I added some weight to beef her up but forget actual weight. I'll have to dig out a scale and check. I remember telling people at cabin fever 80# , I'll have to harvest a 9 volt from a smoke alarm and stick in scale. Never have any of those weird square batteries when needed!!

Had a little bit of time to do some more work on the blade. Made the push arm attachments to blade. Still have to trim them to correct distance for blade attitude. This time around I am trying to get everything exact from both sides. And will be swapping out radio so I can use the trannis Rx/tx. Then I'll be able to slow down the hydraulics to be more realistic in movements. Always have something to improve on. I think that's why I never really have a finished model, can make the excuse "it's not completely done yet". :). Easy way out for when something isn't right :)

The spacing is for when blade tilts and cylinder shafts don't contact supports. Probably wider than needed but it also ties into cutting edge reinforcement. The lift braces only have to lift not push so I figured it would tie into better.

And thank you Mario for hooking me up with some pics!!! I'm close with the blade except for the dirt blade with rock guard. But backside is going to be close to 1:1. The cat book I have has only a side cut away of blade and part numbers for cutting edges. Thanks!!

Well first trial fit with hydraulics working, everything was just tacked in place. I didn't take in consideration of the cylinders becoming more vertical as the blade is fully lifted. So, have to move the lift bushing out about .75". Only problem is I don't want to make all new pieces. They were hack sawed and milled to shape. Just lots of work so another piece will be added and an extra set of holes will be there. If I can press the bushings out I may just weld holes shut. Never know :). And after doing some measuring I'm going to lengthen push arms .75" also. That gives more room between blade and tractor. Allows more room for stabilizer arm clearance. Difficult to measure off of the 1:50 scale model for the small details. I'm more so trying for a scale look and not necessarily exact scale. And have to wait on some metal stock delivery. Hopefully it will see paint in less than two weeks. Have dirt piles everywhere, having the dozer in the shop is hurting backyard business. :)

I'm having issues with photobucket on my I pad, once I load a pic it freezes. So posted from phone and now typing on pad!! Anyway,,, I made the push arms .75" longer. Gives more space between tractor and blade. Will allow better placement of stabilizer bar with the proper mounting area. And this time around I was able to remember not to drill too deep for the mounting holes. And was able to remove pivot ball from old ones and place in new ones. (That was good for the first one,, second one had some colorful language added to it). Still have to mill the ends a bit but for fitting and testing its good so far. Have to attach stabilizer bar ( made new one out of steel) make hose mounts for it, and cutting edges for blade, and some little odds n ends.

Depends how you look at them, I have them mounted the same direction as the 1:1 cat dozer. The idea is when the grouser digs in , it get traction and at the same time it will force the following grouser down by means of force thus giving more traction. At least that's the way it was explained to me :).

One thing I did screw up is how the push arm linkage is mounted to blade, on the 1:50 scale model I have the mount is angled like I have it, on the 1:1 machine it is in line with push arm. I didn't catch that till after I made and attached them!! I keep forgetting the scale models aren't accurate but close. The little details sometimes get changed to make a scale model. It's one of those little things but it bugs me to no end!! Lol!!

Yeah, I really tried to get it really square and even. I think when I attached the push arm mounts it went a little out. But it might also have been my welding table. If ya can see it in any of my pics I got it from harbor freight, just stamped steel table. It's not even close to flat but along edges where the stamped bends are its good enough. One of those things that I have to work around/with. :). It was like $80 verses the one I wanted to get $400. Might get a piece of 3/4" steel and make a better table. Have a salvage yard close by but he doesn't cut, so whatever he has you have to take the whole piece (pay by pound). Last time I looked he had a nice 4' by 5' piece of 5/8" that would have make me a nice 3x4' table. :).

Got primer and first coat on. I'm going to 3d print the rock guard for on top. Black and paint blade face yellow. After looking around on the net, there are a lot of variations of blades. Some made by owners, different year models from cat, so having looked through all of them , it really doesn't matter to me as I've always been more for function verses replication of exact model. :)

Thanks guys!!
Right now it is really appreciated the good complements!!! So,,,,, tonight I finally decided to get into the computer aspect of radio programming. I went the traditional way programming the dumptruck, excavator and the lowboy trailer. So I decided to try the computer programming for setting up the dozer. I had been using the turnigy tx9 for the dozer, had some minor glitches and have been wanting to change to the taranis radio system I have for the others, modelmatch, telemetry ect,,, better set up for me. After getting the mixes and channels sorted out and using the simulator I was ready to swap the actual Rx out of dozer and do the fine tuning of servo end points, centering, ect. Figured wait till tomorrow to do that. But tonight I figured I would flash the actual radio memory with new dozer model. Had the appropriate slot and downloaded the other models to computer. Now it gets bad, somehow I accidentally loaded the new model to radio memory before I downloaded and saved models that were already established on the actual radio. Sooooo now I have model 1-3 nothing and model 4(the d11) programmed but not physically hooked up. I was soo mad at myself for doing that!!! Could have cried!! So now I get to reprogram the excavator, not that bad, the trailer, a little bit confusing as I used 4channels not a splitter for the 4 actuators, and finally the dump truck, that's the pain, transmission servo, lockers, dump mixing ect,,,,, oh one of those nights to lay awake thinking about my mistakes I've made, definately puts me in the bad side of the man child, feel like I have to go to bed without dinner to think about what I've done as punishment!!!!
Well I guess I'll get a little more familiar with my radio programming skills!!!

Spektrum, buddy... :)
I figured out what I did wrong, I had two different programs open on the desktop of computer, I was updating the firmware on one and reading/writing on the other. I downloaded all the models to the desktop and then wiped the radio to start fresh. When I went to download the d11 file I got confused and x'ed out of the other file I had on desktop with the original models. Temporary storage, but I deleted it!! It would have happened with anything, I can say that being able to set up the models on the computer is easier than hitting all the buttons on the radio (if ya know what your doing :) ) tonight I ran the dozer for the last time using old radio, tomorrow I'm going to swap out tx/Rx on her. Should be just a matter of centering and limiting servos. And I also just got done redoing the excavator. I did slow the action of slew ring, still turns same speed just a little delay to start. Hopefully it will be easier on gears and less jerkey from inputs. Also changed the initial startup on track motors. A little less sensitive from small travel on side pots that I'm controlling them with. Center beep also to let me know when in neutral. The pump is on a switch then directed to dial pot. That way I can set it and forget it from switching different models, or up/down the rpms manually. All these new radios have a tones of what ya can do!! I do like this taranis, it's completely open it whatever ya want to do, can change any inputs to any channels any switches ect, assuming like the specky stuff but only $250!! Next it to reprogram the dumper.

Well I can't run the dozer wide open and level at the same time. On a1:1 dozer I can level running wide open. Guess I need some more experience on the little guy:). No videos but will take some soon. And there is a giant wolf running around the pit!! Look at the size of his tracks! Lol!!

Yea it does!! The part I hate the most about this hobby, programming the radio stuff. Well I just had to learn all over again!! Thanks, after playing around with the new blade it definately is better for the dirt!!

It looks pretty smooth to me, I have trouble staying in the seat of a 1:1 dozer when I'm grading. That's the toughest part for me. I'm good with the hoe and loader, but grading with the dozer is up,down. Up,down...

Had to cheat a little bit, brought over another scoop of dirt!! I tilled up a patch of dirt last year. Tilled it when it was super dry then stock piled it. Figured over winter any clumps of grass would be pretty much decomposed. Got into the pile last week and in the middle it was still popcorn-fart dry!! Just like it was last year when I piled it!! Even made the pile as to collect water on top!! We had a lot of rain/snow also! Had a nice pile of about 80 yards

Thanks , yes I agree, I have been around coal mines and always wanted to drive a d11 with the big coal blade. Guess that's why I went that way to start. But for the model the regular dirt blade is working out better. And I think I got the geometry of cutting edge and blade more accurate this time. If I get motivated a bit more I'll get around to making the rock guard. Still haven't attached hoses to back of blade and just have them zip-tied to the stabilizer bar,, for now :). Just having too much fun using it while the weather is nice!!! Oh and just watched the weather, I live in central Pennsylvania and they are saying we have a frost warning tonight!!! Crazy!!!! Was going to take equipment down to Riverlot to rework our truck track but keeping them home instead, that's why the pile of dirt got dropped off,,, more quality relaxing holiday weekend time,, running heavy equipment. (1:14 style :))

Thanks guys, I was able to "tame" down the excavator with radio functions. And the dozers new blade is much better suited for the dirt she lives in now. I am an impatient sob, and always get in a hurry to do the task at hand,,,, this hobby has been rather therapeutic for me as I am constantly telling myself I'm in a hurry to do nothing. Digging and pushing dirt with these models is basically my therapy for the "have to get it done yesterday" of real life work. Now if I could just get my health insurance to pay for some more models I would be happy!!!
I'll get some more videos soon! Thanks!!

Started on the road project at Riverlot. Mario, you talk about roots!! I feel your pain now!!! The soil is perfect, but just littered with finger roots and the occasional runner. Guess scale would be like digging roots about one to two feet around!!! Dozer rips through the little ones but hits a big one and the chopping crew has to come out.

Today's work so far,, bugs are good, we are on the side of river and the wind comes across from other side. Helps keep bugs down and always shady with a nice breeze. We really lucked out getting this spot, mile from home, full all time hook-ups and neighbors are into the rc stuff!! I should bring down tractor and till up the whole area where we play. The owner is cool too, can do whatever we want, it's not a party place but more like a campground.

Looks like you are getting a lot of work done. Seeing that flat water, I couldn't imagine going there without a fast R/C boat.
Cooper
06-02-2015, 04:01 PM
Modelman, yes flat water, mornings and evenings are usually glass, that's when I've had my fastest runs. It is still a river but the main channel is closer to other side. Maybe 8-10' at most. In those pics I could walk about 1/2 way out up to my waist. Being it a river I've always worried about a boat on re-entry becoming a torpedo, rocky bottom in the shallow side. And about 1/4 mile down it flattens to about 3' deep all way across. So if one sunk I would go down ther and wait. But when we run water is usually clear enough to see bottom in deep. Always painted bright just to be able to see a carcus on bottom:)
Joe, I didn't run the ford dump to find out. I'm sure she will go up unloaded in second gear. But fully (over) loaded as I always do, I'm not sure , full throttle first gear:) hopefully this weekend I'll get some videos and find out if it's a one way road or not. But I really don't have the need to haul dirt up as most of the work will be below. And it's more of a access road so my lazy butt doesn't have to carry anything down. !! In the one pic with the dozer hood up you can see the edge of the rocks, the dirt next to that was the previous road. Believe it or not, the dozer climbs that, forward facing, now that it's mostly dirt it is a hill climb for the d11, goes down well but not so well up:).

Hey guys, haven't forgotten about anyone, just have been brutally busy!! And some life challenges!! Spent some time at the local ICU ward as my father was life flighted wit a massive pulmonary embolism,, some close calls but he got home the other day and doing well.
Then my trips to the emergency room , twice,, old injury coming back to haunt me!! Broke wrist in past and tripped and braced my fall with my hand. That resulted with two days later going to emergency room. Been through a few breaks and sprains so I know when to go. Three days later they had to insurt needles to remove fluid build up, now I've had bone visible in past but having your body become a hydraulic pump to separate fractured bone, well that just simply hurt!! That was what put me back in er second time. Now I am waiting three more weeks to get a cast removed to find out if I can escape surgery or not, surgery would be 6 month recovery:(. So this summer has been up and down so far. This should have been taken care of 18 years ago but then it was mind over matter, if you don't mind the pain then it doesn't matter!! Winning races was more important than getting old!!! Oh how stupid and nieve we are young!!

I'm a little lost... your initial fall, it wasn't realised that you had fractured your wrist? Then your body forced it to break?
Lol,, initial injury was about 15 yr ago, but not diagnosed as a break. Have to give into the fact that particular bone is the #1 misdiagnosed break/fracture in the er. And since then I just assumed the pain was just part of dealing with a body that's been beaten up a bit :). And just recently the emergency dr X-Rays reviled a complete break but didn't know if it was from back then or from recent, couple days later swelling started pushing bones apart. Just didn't get appointment to orthopedic surgeon soon enough I guess. And now I have to see if it will grow back together in the next three weeks. Or it will definately be some more internal hardware for me:). Just a real bugger to have to make do with keeping from trying to use that hand. It lets me know when to stop!! And I don't want to be in this situation any more than I have to. Nows when being self employed sucks!! Lol!!

A couple under 10k building projects, and basically anything else that comes up!! The jobs come and go but the rental income is steady so I'm more just gonna be really board and grumpy that I can't do much!! And I am really trying not to get dirt, grass clippings, oil, aluminum chips, and whatever else into this cast!! It's already gotten old having duct tape and trash bagging my arm to shower. I can't imagine what stuff might be growing in/on it three weeks from now. And with high heat and humidity outside not sweating just doesn't happen. Have to get blade back on dozer (adjusted track tensioner) and I'll be in good shape to do some work with the electric over hydraulics controls :)

Well,, that was a pic of second trip to er to get fluid drained and then a few days after going to ortho and purple cast. Next is another trip to ortho on the 11th, find out if surgery or not. And by the way things feel, it's getting worse than better. Didn't sleep much last night from throbbing. Maybe chopping wood over weekend wasn't a good idea. :(. Just split some kindling to start a fire at camp. Seriously I've been trying to baby it as the last thing I want is more appointments with dr and cast for any longer than necessary. And the sad part is having the radio on my lap to control dozer/excavator aggravates it just by moving my pointer finger. And ya can't get much more less effort than moving the sticks on our radios!!! Maybe some pain meds in order to play with toys!! Don't want to go that way as pain is your friend, (usually telling ya something wrong). Maybe some short videos are just what the doctor may order!!!

Have to get blade back on dozer (adjusted track tensioner) and I'll be in good shape to do some work with the electric over hydraulics controls :)
hmm i would ask for a plastic cast you can do anything like shower and even swim with it and best of all you can clean it if your carefull

Well it's been a while but I'm getting back into swing of things. Made a couple videos diggin some saplings growing on the side of my playpen. Haven't had time to upload but hopefully some internet time tonight. Just spent some time redoing the rx/tx settings to the lowboy trailer I mistakenly deleted a while ago.
Had to drain and rebuild the cylinders on the hoe, I used a neoprene backed washer to secure the Pistons to the rods. Found out the rubber material was not oil friendly and started to break down into small pieces. So anyone else using the rubber-backed washers from micro fasteners,,, they are not oil resistant. !! Perfect for my style of learning,,, learning what not to do then learning what works:). But the good news was all my seals were holding up and didn't need replacing but while it was apart I installed new. I bought 100+ oil o-rings for like $2 from McMaster. So the .20$ was no big deal, just hope no pieces got into valves. So far so good. And I have to get my but to work on some type of screening plant, get the conveyor working!! Lots of projects, lots to do!!! Should be getting back into the company business now!!! And will get some more videos soon.
Going to try and get to both showers coming up next month.

Lol Mario, !!! And that is why I buy the cheep hobbyking esc's when I can!! And usually buy two of them!! The best advise I herd someone say when gettin into a hobby was, " if you think you can figure things out yourself and don't want to read the directions, take a bundle of money (twice as much as you are spending on the cheep stuff) and find a nice place in your back yard, some lighter fluid and a match. Dowse the pile of money with the lighter fluid, light the match, let it burn. Now, 1) you just saved yourself a lot of time, 2) you got a better show by actually seeing your money burn and not just smoke, 3) now listen to others advise and read the instructions, buy cheep what you can and buy quality where you need !!" Sometimes I really think one of these days I'm going to burn some cash or realize I should read more!!!
Mikem, I'm thinking I may try and build a articulated dump truck over winter and soon get into a makeshift screening plant or shaker table??!?!
Yes mark, it's good to finally start having some "fun time" been backlogged too long on work stuff, it's nice to finally see some daylight at the end!!

I harvested the motor from a massage chair, it made some little dimples rub your lower back. The motor is not very powerful and I already messed it up somehow by using the wrong transformer from wall outlet, ran 12v ac not 12vdc. It still works but developed a couple cogs, thinking I may have demagnetized it a bit. It was working like it should so just getting the motor speed figured out and I'll be tossing some dirt!!!

Ha, didn't even think of them, I have something similar around here somewhere. Ideally I would like to have it wired to a car battery or 12v transformer plugged in. And have some sort of variable speed pot, as I don't know how speed affects material on conveyor as angle increases, still learning but thanks for the idea as those motors are great power and probably right in the rpm range too!! Thanks mark!!

No problem. That is one of many voltage ranges they offer. The one I use is 5-16V. 200W.
I like my conveyor speed but if I was gonna be anal about it, I'd probably go with something in the 50-75 rpm range and use the regulator to set it where you need for different materials.
I'm sure mine are too slow for a coarse material like small stone or pebble. They'd probably just roll back. It would be nice to have more speed range to work with.

I'm ready if it comes to that. Going with Lou's idea I've been collecting wiper blades for along time and trimming the leading edge off them to glue on the belt if need be. Fortunately, the angle I needed and the speed I'm at, I really don't need paddles on the belt.
The way I see it, belt speed is like that trick of pulling a table cloth real fast and not disturb the dishes on top of it if you know what I mean.
Some of us start slow.....some of us start fast.......must be an age thing..

And also going back to the original brushed drive motors with the simple esc. The "upgrade" kit isn't better in my opinion. The system is set up for 2s voltage, I am running 3s and full power the tracks are like an Indy car. I forget how much I have them limited with radio but I know it's well below half. And they don't have much power. They stall very easily. Just my opinion but I think the original set up with the brushed gear head motors is better. I have some extra time lately, work is slowing down so I'm eager to get back to fixing or building something. :)

And shortly after running excavator a pin broke in gear head on tracks. Was using excavator to chew through roots on bank then using dozer to push level road surface. Ok so tires were a limiting factor in what size haul truck can be made, and I am also limited if I can't figure out how to make telescopic cylinders. I'm making on out of brass first. Figure I can solder ends easier than brazing stainless. And brass is way easier to machine for me than stainless. If I can make these work I'm going to try and make the finished cylinders out of 416 stainless and solder/braze parts together. Pics above are a start, I have to make a small hole in first stage to allow oil to fill inner chamber on stage two. So these are in theory going to be very similar to the real deal multi stage hydraulic cylinders.
JAMMER
10-02-2015, 06:40 PM
Cooper your drawing of the cylinder shows a lower and an upper port why? If you are going for a telescoping cylinder you only need one port. As for your cylinders you don't need a hole on the stage bottom you just need the tube and the seals to keep the oil in the cylinders. Your picture shows a bleeder on the top stage and that is good but not really need for what you are going to do. You will need o rings to seal the stages and to be guides. Hope I have helped it has always been my intentions to build a multi stage cylinder but that is as far as I got. Ed

Yes, you are right, the smaller rod is hollow because that's what I had on hand. The final one will not be hollow. And the piston part has two orings, only one will be there on final, I made the second one for centering purposes at the other end. (Just for initial set up and experimenting. ) the drawling was just a image I found off the net, it is not what I'm planing on final. I'm planing on using orings top and bottom which will center piston/shafts anyway. The way I'm making them is cutting/milling inner oring pistons and outter pistons (one on each end) and soldering them on. Well basically soldering on chunks of brass then machining them down to size. The hole I'm referring to is to allow oil to enter on retraction and exit on extension between cylinder stages. If not there it will lock and not move. I've been wanting to try building some of these for some time now and am finally getting around to it. Just figured I would make a trial one to see what pitfalls scale parts have. And once I get an working idea of what to do (and what not to do) I'll be able to slim down as much as possible and make them from stainless. ,,,,, I think:)

Some more done, I got them working without internal locking. Have a small hole right above each piston to allow oil to fill/empty chambers. After looking at truck cylinders I may have to have the smallest rod hollow as they are mounted inverted and oil pumps from bottom. Some more creative work to be done.

I'm using 1/16" size orings, if I use smaller cross section orings I would be able to get cylinder wall thickness thinner. Only 1/32" oring thickness McMaster doesn't have in those sizes. Small thickness metric orings available but I don't think the cylinders this size will look too out of place on a machine such at a 777 or 773 haul truck. And they are only visible when dumping. I'm more into function than exact scale anyway. And I'm not sure how easily I can machine the inner oring grooves on stainless. You machinist guys,, would some soft steel be just as good for cylinders? Easier for me to machine and I imagine a good polishing would last on a oil filled cylinder. I just have always used stainless on hydraulic rods.

Yeah, all hand crankin!! Problem I have with my skills, tooling, small machines is trying to machine the inner dimensions and being 3" deep. That's why I was using tubing and making the tops/Pistons separate then soldering/brazing them in. Then going back and final machining to size. I have to make some small inside groove cutters. Only have one that I've made and it took me a bit of time grinding that one. Always seems like I spend way more time making the tooling than parts!!! Lol! Guess that how it always is!!

ID grooving, I found them on McMaster . Oring groovers and snap ring groovers . You have to take them slow and a very good sense of touch , they break easy . Always use tube for your barrels. Manual or cnc , you should be able to do stainless . You could chrome your barrels .

Well I got it working,,,, problem I encountered on final polishing and installing new orings was on the outter most cylinder the groove I cut for inner seal let loose. The way I did it was to use tube and soldered onto end a piece smaller diameter that I could cut the groove inside. Problem was when I soldered it the solder did not penetrate the whole piece. The grove was cut just a bit into the tube so without the solder wicking the entire piece the small ring is now loose. Now I've got to take all apart again solder it in place, re grove without de soldering end. Ahh the wonderful work of not doing it right the first time!!! I think what I did wrong was had tolerance too tight and that did not allow addiquate wicking of solder on entire surface. Sooner or later(apparently later) I'll get this working. And I also realized I need to rig up a pump and tank to use as a test machine. Slowly getting there.
And thanks for the input on # of stainless and McMaster grooving tools, I don't know how I missed them on that site!!

They are the three sizes of tube I used. And in the one pic I have a scribe pointing to the holes in tubes that allow oil to enter into on the downward stroke and oil to exit on the upward stroke. The smaller piston has two orings but doesn't need two. When I made it first I was using it as a guide. Well a mess up really:). I just soldered bigger solid caps onto tubs, then machined the hole and inner oring grove. That way I never had to worry about messing up inner parts of tubes. Polished them before soldering/ and again after. I want to make them out of steel or stainless for project on dumper. Just don't know how easy that will be for me to work. I'm usually just brass and aluminum.

This was a project my dad wanted me to get done for him while he is in sunny Florida. It is the sump drain from house basement. Last year critters and leaves clogged end up and froze solid 3-4' length. So I replace the last 15' and put a cleanout in it. Wasn't really necessary but I didn't have and couplings for dwv pipe only tees and an end cap. But now if something cloges end I can push it out. And also had something to dig up and push dirt around :). Contract job, I will have to bill him. But he only pays in 1:14 scale!!!!

Used to work in a machine shop building 3 stage dump cylinders, what we built had the oil enter the bottom of the cylinder. The bottom looked just like yours except it had a port, no port at top. we then welded a heavier flange on the bottom of the second and third stage in which we machined the seal groove. For the top of first stage we did same as you, we did internal thread for the other 2, know you can't do this so just repeat what you did on #1 stage, no seals just make sure that the inside of caps are smooth. Double O rings on bottom are fine gives a better seal. My model 300 ton has this type of cylinder works great, and 1/16" size difference is fine even for tops work fine as seals are inside of piston, and no seal at top allows air to flow out through heads.

Thanks for the info earl. These cylinders are what I would call inverted, the smaller stage is on bottom and larger casing cylinder is the top. It's how the cylinders are mounted on cat haul trucks. That's why I had the oil entering from smaller stage as it will be the bottom. I guess this way dirt and debris are kept to a minimum on the rods.

I'm worse than a girl in a dress shop!! Can't figure out what to build yet. 797 is too big, Brian got the 793 down and I'm now thinking 795b. It's a simpler design to build, more square front end. Tires, problem. 777 are 7.35". 785b are 8.35" and 797 are 12.9" scale. (Just a quick internet look up and I may be wrong. 1:14 scale). I found some hand truck tires 8" that are not correct but I'll just say I got retreads!!! Now the height of bed for loading on the 797 is like 19". The 785b is 14". That would be ok for me to load with the cat I got. I think, a test apparatus I set up. The black line is 14".

It may be better for me to make a scale tire, trim sand the plastic tire and then make the mould from that. It's just a start to see if I can do it. Cooper-If I were doing this I would simplify the tread pattern. In this picture the mold would have some very thin sections and if prepped correctly and waxed properly it might work but if it sticks any to the small sections the mold will tear and be ruined. Here is a place that will tell you everything about the different rubbers, waxes, etc.-

Earl, I think I can make this double acting fairly easily. On the small diameter rod I may use solid stock and drill two holes length of it. Side by side so to speak. One completely through and the other stoping at outlet hole. The hard part would be having such a small workpiece keeping drill holes true. And being creative on end for fittings and mounting hole. Probably solder brass tube for extended location of fittings. But I think it could be done. And then a regular servo controlled valve could be implemented for up/down operation. I have been worried about having enough force to retract the cylinder if it was single acting. And you if it were double acting movement could be more controlled for extension and retraction. Plus when the cylinder was in any position it would stay there. Single acting it tends to drift, oil back feeding through pump when not engaged. That would be eliminated. Thanks earl, you help my understanding of this mini project.

Single and double acting cylinders reg, on the double acting one the diagonal tube is what I'm talking about. That one needs to penetrate complete stage of that rod. The other hole I would make would only have to penetrate to the oil port on side of that stage.

It's big!!! Way big!!! Actually it's about 1/2" too tall for actual scale. When I designed the part I added treds, should have designed different. But this is just a trial print and mock up to see how I can do it. And I figure this tread pattern is unidirectional and will allow for a simpler mould making extract. I have to print it in four pieces then they will be glued together and worked to be used for casting in rubber/ urethane. But it's scale for the size tires on a 785b haul truck. The biggest one I can make and still be able to load with the excavator.

I love it! I need to buy a printer BAD! I have be wanting to build a mold for a specific tire used on the off-highway logging trucks here many years ago. You have done yours exactly how I thought I would try if I had a printer(pieces). Since I don't have a printer I started to make my mold out of wood but it is very difficult because the grain messes with a guy while machining it. It sucks basically is what I'm saying. RW, you're my hero...

I have full confidence that you will succeed and make your own tires but I'm worried if they'll be strong enough to handle the load.
Just like the 1:1 trucks. They say the only thing stopping them from making bigger trucks is the tires strength.
Gotta find that sweet spot between too firm or too soft of a compound...... ok, I'll stop right there. My bad. Lol

Thanks reg, why is it every time you try and make something with the tool ya got you always end up buying more?? Now my home computer keeps freezing up when I'm trying to design these tires!!! It's one of those all in one touch screen desktops. I think it's 6 years old. I don't think it's old but in computer years I guess it is. Might be time to start looking around for new computer!!! I guess that's why I have liked the simple manual stuff, hand crank mill, simple calculator, tape measure , ect. Once I get happy with a design the final print job will be more fine of a print job. Those two pieces, each took almost 4 hours to print. When the resolution and layers are bumped up it will be like 5-1/2 hours print time each.
Mario, got any info on a 785b? That's what I'm planing on. Have no clue how much she will be when done,,yet,,,, I just started to "learn" about the shore hardness of rvt rubber. And or urethane. The tire will be a solid pour. So they probably wouldn't squat much. Trying to find the right hardness is difficult as I really have no clue of what I'm talking about :). So far I'm guessing a shore hardness of at least 40 maybe 60. As from what I've gathered a lot of concrete moulds for pavers are hardness of that. I don't mind if they don't squish much but don't want them rolling side to side. Someone said about pouring a harder core and softer tread but that may be a bit more than I want to do. And no cooking rubbers around here!!!! Lol,,, all the stuff I've found is room temperature vulcanization. Rtv. Just mix and pour.
Mike, sometimes I really think about just hand carving something out of wood, I'm old school and work better with my hands while tool are in em verses my fingers on top of a keyboard!!!! I guess back in school when I was trying to figure out where to get beer money and what girls were going to what bar I may have been better off taking notes and listening to the teacher, a may have just learned something back then,,,,, but boy what a good time it was!!! Lol!!! I guess that's why I still use a shovel at work;) (not being able to pay someone to do,it for me) :)

Just got off the phone with Brian and I don't know why I didn't think of it before but the master of 3d printing gave me the idea of printing a mould for whatever size tires I want. So I think I may try that. Another thing to "learn",,,, casting stuff. Just another reinforcing for our hobby, if you can't find it make it!!! Now all I have to do is move computer out to garage, start a argument with wife, get banished to garage and in a couple months possibly have a new baby addition to the construction company :)

He did a heck of a job on that truck, looks and works excellent. It was nice to load. On the road dump trucks three scoops and they are about full and have to be precise in dumping into the beds. With his haul truck I was getting close to 10-12 scoops and could load fast as I didn't have to be so precise. Can't wait to get one rolling of my own!!

The stage cylinder again, the cylinders we made were like the first drawing all oil into the small end. Remember I said I had 3 oil baths when first designing the cylinder, the reason for that was when retracting the cylinder even with the pressure set on the pump I split the cylinder wide open. Why because of the different oil volume in the lift stage to the retract stage, to solve the problem I but in a flow divider, this allowed me to dump a percentage of oil into the storage tank, using the smaller amount of oil to pressurize the part of the cylinder, this solved the problem. I have done the same with my hydraulic break, it came down to fast, by moving the handle on the side of the flow divider I can move the break down at any speed I want, makes it easy to stop it in the right angle. I managed to get a mini flow divider made by an old friend of mine don't really know how he did it, wish he was still alive to find out and scared to take it apart.

Hey old guy,,, haha just want to say that!!! Lol,, ok back to serious,, I never thought of different volumes being used. I am going to try and make a double acting multi stage cylinder with both ports on bottom. I hear ya about bathing in oil!!! I'm the definition of insane sometimes, doing the same thing and expecting different results,, how many times do I need to pressurize a oil filled hose and not secure the end?? Apparently about every time I have a hydraulic project!!!! Forget to secure end, blast a shot of air to blow clean, not slip on the hose good enough,, ect,, I have learned to move anything I don't want oil on first!!!! Except for the cat,,, different story! Lol!!! Maybe some hair paint (colored butane ). I did find out some of the other cylinders out there have bushings on the top and only oil seal on piston. Then the chambers don't need to fill with oil. May look into that design but still want to do the double acting. That way I figure I can control up/down better and it will stay at any in between position. Would have to have valve assembly and all that but for this dump project I do believe a lot of room will be available to hide/place things. 785b haul truck 1:14.
Well I got some better dimensions of tires and drew up another profile. Changed printer preferences and resolution to a better final print. Print time went up to almost 9 hours!! And the tire is sliced into 4 pieces to fit print area. So in a couple days I may have an idea of what to cast. Still haven't figured out hardness that I need. Shore hardness of 60? Anyone know if that would be ok??
