Ran out of any heavy items to stuff in the bed!! I'm pretty confident that whatever I can get in the bed, the truck will be able to dump it!! I do have to cut a relief in the tank cover and move the pressure gauge housing on account of cylinders being I the way. Just enough to have to move them some. Originally I was planing on having the bolts on bottom of large stage just like the 1:1 machines but assembly was easier to make them the way I did.

Cooper-I'm not being picky because this is a GREAT model but the dump looks a bit slow to me. Is this the finished version? However-this will give you time to grab a beer while it is dumping. Will you have limit switches on the box? Great work!!

Looks good RW, I wouldn't think a 5 gal. bucket of wet sand would weight more than the steel you stacked in the back. I'd say it'll lift about anything you could or would actually haul in it. Can't wait to see it finished and in the dirt!

In the videos it is running the pump pretty slow and I have not installed fitting very tight. This one could have benefited from the higher flow pump but I got what I got :). A lot of oil is being pumped into those cylinders. She is far from finished, still just finding out if things work. :).

Oh I've been tryin to get a hold of you to ask how you attached the servo horn to the valves ( bangs head into wall ) Drill center out , make spacer or get flat head screw for valve ? My thinkin is the servo horn should but right against the the valve horn .

Missed your call Steve, I'll get ahold of you. On the valve the servo spline should just slip into the horn that is attached to valve. Some pics would be helpful for me to show you, give me some time and I'll try and get some pics of what I'm talking about. I use the smaller flow pump from premacon. Almost all models don't need the bigger one, this is one exception as I probably could use the higher volume on the bigger pump to lift bed slightly faster. But again I haven't messed with speed or any fine tuning yet.

Can't wait to watch you build a ramp, and drive the dozer into the half filled truck for transport to the next job site!

On your piston design change, did you go from weld to a drilled cross hole with a pin? And then did you have to weld on the other end of the o ring cap? All these pictures makes me want to try machining something similar. Thanks for the photos!

Starting on hand rails. I know the front grate isn't quite scale looking but with the brake I have I just can't get two bends that close. Wanted to have six ribs but three will have to do. Not wanting to make up a press jig just for that. And with steps and handrails it will not be noticeable. (At least for me) ;).

On the steps I made them just like rise and run of building regular steps. Just by luck I went with 10 steps including top so my measure of 6 1/4" was .625 rise on each step. I used the edge finder for edge of step stringer and some angle blocks to position on table. Then just moved mill .625 for every step and a tread of .85. Nine times for each stringer. Like in that pic I sent you joe I needed a large flat surface and had to remove the vise to get it. once the math is done that's when the dro really helps out. Just hit zero move to next one ,,,repeat.

Well scratch that 1/8" aluminum hand rails!! Pretty hard for me to weld, just one wrong twitch with the hand or foot pedal and poof!! Instead of welding pieces together I now have a big gap between them!!! So some rails are alum, ones that are back welded to cab and ladder. The others are steel. Proving to be difficult to secure or clamp while tacking. :).

The aluminum is tricky to bend, as I couldn't find any bend able stuff so 6061 rod. Have to heat it and then it's may still stress crack on some of the 90s. So that's why I'm also doing steel. A lot more forgiving in the bending and welding. Was having a hard time keeping parts in place even just to get a tack on them. A little bump or poke with the rod and they are moving. So I made this up to get square 90s and to hold things in place. As long as it last for a couple it will be fine. Just have to get a quick tack

I was mostly using a 30" 3-in-1 brake shear roll bender. I know it's hard on the bar but I used one section on end for all my bending. Would square off blade vertically and horizontally to try and keep square. And a bit of tweaking in the ole bench vise while slipping a tube over the rod as to keep material bending at the bend and not length of rod.

Anytime you are south, and east,,, your always welcome joe,, power, yes plenty, she will go up more than 30 percent incline. I haven't tested fully loaded but for what she is designed for around a 10-15 percent grade that doesn't pose any problems. I may even change some of the gearing in the 4:1,4:1,3:1 tranny. May switch to three 3:1 plantary. Just off top of my head I think the total reduction is 144:1, I may drop it to 81:1 or 108:1. They are my options that can easily be done by just swiping carrier , planet and sun gears

I think the pressure is still around 100 psi, haven't messed with any of that yet. I did notice in the grass when fully loaded sometimes the steering cylinders would stall when vehicle was stopped. But hey it's never good to be trying to crank the wheels unless you are moving. So that really isn't any problem. And lifting is no problem even at that pressure!! Guess that big 3/4" boar really does pack more punch!!

Thanks mikem!!!

Well I've been trying to gather all my options and solutions for increasing the speed of dumping the bed. After a lot of numbers, ideas, evaluations,, I pretty much came to the conclusion of it is what it is!!! I could possibly get a different pump, as I have the lesser flow one from premacon. I think the 600mil/min. Could go with the 1200mil/min. Now that would theoretically cut my cycle times in half, and the bed should take 15seconds to go up. But with running two cylinders off one valve and having a internal boar of .75" and the I.d. Of fittings acting like road blocks the best solution is to get the higher flow pump and have each cylinder supplied from its own valve. And run 4or 6 mm hose to them. Rather expensive modification:). Guess this is good reason for most people having a "plan" or doing the calculations before they cut parts or purchase parts:)!!!! I don't like the idea of independent valves unless a equalizer line installed.
Do you guys think doubling mil/min flow from 600 to 1200 will noticeably improve cycle times? I keep going back to inner diameter of fittings and hose as major restrictions for rate of flow. I'm sure I'll find a home for a hydraulic pump if I purchased a new one, :)

I'm not sure what your fittings are like but the SAE fittings I use have the same internal bore for both 1/8 and 5/32 sizes. The excavator uses 5/32 hose and fittings but was restricted at every connection. I drilled out the fittings to match the inside diameter of the hose and the difference in speed was noticeable. I'm not saying it was an earth shattering change but it did help. Can't you swap the motor and spin the pump a bit quicker?

New gears arrived today, just in time for tear down for paint. Ihave 144:1 reduction and with these new gears I can change to 108:1 That might be a little closer to scale speed. Also can go to 81:1 (or 96:1) but I think that will drastically drop my torque and be too fast.

Here is a suggestion to improve flow to your dump cyls, use 4mm fittings on the valve to a tee block, then 2,5mm fittings from tee to cyls. The 4mm fittings on valve need to be filed down to screw into place, just leave enough flat spot to snug with a wrench.

Originally Caterpillars were painted Gray up to the end of 1931 Then changed to "Hi-Way Yellow" December 1931 making them more visible on construction jobs.
Cat changed the old "Hi-Way Yellow" to the new present day gloss yellow between 1979-1984.
Main reason for was the old yellow had a high lead content which is now banned. The old paint lasted longer because of the lead though. I have restored several old Cats from the 30's that still retained the gray or yellow paint.

First coat on the frame.

Joe the number on pump is 4002. Now that I have everything apart I'm going to open things up a bit try and make bigger hose work and open up the fittings some. I'm feeding both those big cylinders with one valve and 4mm hose. Doesn't make much difference if I up the rpm on pump so I'm pretty sure it's a restriction issue with all the small fittings and hose. Thanks joe:).

Swapping out one of the 4:1 planets for a 3:1, increasing speed some. Trying to get up to 30 mph (1:1 scale) speed. Forget if I ever greased the other two planet gears, well it's apart so might as well clean and regrease. So I should end up with tranny being 3:1,3:1,4:1 then diff being 3:1 gearing reduction.

Yup that pretty much is it, for the d11 and haul truck I did also purchase (off eBay) a shop manual. It shows some parts to get better idea of how they fit and work. My plans are just number jotted down on a notepad and some rudimentary hand sketches. But I have it all thought out in my head :). Lol!! That's why I end up with a few extra parts, ya know cut it twice and it's still short!!

And haven't seen this for a while!! Cleaned off and now ready to build her back up!! I did order some bigger smc fittings and need to make a splitter but no big deal for that. I went right to the source,

Smcpneumatics.com

Is the site that manufactures all the push to connect fittings. Cheaper to order from them and quicker than waiting for some from overseas. The site has all of them but you may have to go to the online catalog and find the part reference number because the pictures don't always match the part. I'll try and post this in the reference section for others also. Along with banebots.com for planetary gearboxes.

One thing to note is what hyd hose are you using... if it's what Premacon supplied you with, then it's burst pressure is well in excess of 500psi. From anyone else that might be a softer more flexible rubber hose, 250psi is right at or just below burst pressure.

I've used the plastic push connects in metric sizes at 20bar no problems.

Cooper
11-16-2016, 09:40 PM
I forget exactly what but the stuff I have is 350 or 400 psi? Been in use on the excavator for some time and I'm running close to 300 (I forget exactly maybe 275) , but no issues. Couldn't wait for premacon long delivery and $ so found some stateside :). The first time learning with hydraulics I did get about 25' (cheep) of stuff that would form a nice bubble as I was looking at it thinking boy that is weird,,, then pop!! Oil everywhere!! That stuff is still sitting around here somewhere!?!??

I did end up using a number size smaller on my seals of the third stage. They were leaking pretty bad. May have grabbed the wrong ones to start with,, at leas I hope so :). Not much room for error and all my tollarances have been pretty much trial and error. Hopefully I don't have to build new cylinders. If I do I'll know what I'm doing this time around. As there is always things to change improve on!!

Guess I wasn't really paying much attention to details, I installed this toggle switch for an on/off from battery. I didn't look at the amp rateing of switch and cooked it!! Also found out that my gearing change is too much for the esc/motor to handle. Thought I cooked the esc but it is still working. Went back to original gearing but esc still runs hot. But I do have a much bigger sensor based esc that I'm swapping out to see if that will run cooler. When we were at the last show the truck took off instantly on its own and that may have had something to do with esc malfunctioning. Glad it wasn't pointed at anyone's trucks, it ran into a cardboard box against wall!!!

Also dismantled lift cylinders for inspection and found some scratches on cylinders. Dropped a size on the orings for second stage and re polished. Put back together and left side kept leaking. Right side was good so at least I was doing something correct :). After cycling them a few times the leak stopped and they are working rather well. No excessive oil on cylinders and nothing leaking out!!

Hi Cooper

For It repairs I always fine the Hammer a good option and as Jammer said 4 pound is good if all else fails threaten it with the industrial shredder I have done that a few times at work and it usualy prompt the misbehaving IT kit to buck its ideas up.
We use the shredder for end of life kit and for security reasons it turns it all into metal confetie which is then recycled amazing piece of kit.
However know where near as much for as RC please keep posting this excellent build

Found the perfect fan, it was the one inside the power source from the computer. And I got done messing with different esc. The original one I was using was Novak crusher, good for rock crawlers. It was getting pretty hot, don't think it would hold up to much abuse and I don't know what Amp rating is but it can't be much.

Just so happens I had this one laying around , and it works with novac sensored motors. Just tested it on bench and all good, next is to stuff it in the belly of the beast. I figured if I'm showing the build might as well go through the growing pains of working on the electronics as well. I may lengthen the on/off switch and just use that for a kill button. Going to be adding other remote switches for lights etc,,

Hey cooper what kind of batteries and what size are they that you run in your truck and d11?

3s 8400 mah turnigy (hobbyking) but they discontinued them!! They were replacements for traxxss stadium trucks. Only need high quality batteries when you are near limits of amp discharge capibilities of battery. I.e. I use dinogy batteries in my boat, 10s (two 5s wired inseries) 5000mah per side, twin motors. This boat pulls 400 amps per side but deplets batteries in less than 3 min run times. But any more time and things melt:(. I pay good $ from r those batteries because I need to, on all the trucks and stuff I'm not anywhere near stressing even the cheapest of batteries. Just depends on quality. There are only about 6 battery manufacturers but a lot of companies rebrand and sell as theirs. Use to know what factories were selling whose batteries but it is really hard to figure me that info anymore, companies don't want to share trade secrets.

Cooper
11-26-2016, 01:14 PM
Thanks ed, first time testing with cylinders they leaked a little bit. And then more,,, I took them apart and found some significant scratches on them and first stage tube wasn't 100% round. Tough getting seamless tubes perfectly round. Some re working and re-polishing brought them back. When I was working the air out of them the left side continued to leak. But after about 8-10 cycles they completely stopped leaking!! I'm not aware of the rings swellig but whatever was leaking past seals stopped. :). I did install larger hoses from valve to cylinders (6mm lines) to help with cycle speeds. As far as lifting capabilities, whatever I can put in , it will dump. And haven't changed psi yet , still running around 100 psi. I'm going to have pump speed 100% when lift cylinders are engaged and running around 49-50% when just using steering cylinders. Also have to tame down initial starting and stopping. Will do that with radio settings. A lot of weight and stress on driveline, don't want to snap it :). I'm my opinion I would Ike to see more top speed but can't sacrifice the bottom end torque. She is probably going to be more slow driven than fast.

Have to find a scale, the one I had was for mailing stuff, plastic and don't think is goes over 40#. Have one somewhere??? Like all my hats and gloves for winter,, can't find them!! Moving and now don't know where stuff got to. I moved everything in big black trash bags. ???? Hopefully they aren't in landfill!!!

Got to put a few hours on her before I would think of selling:). But I'm a realist, everything is for sale,, for the right price:).

That was a great game for the Steelers. My son got married Saturday and they were staying at a hotel at Station Square but they were woken up 3am this morning from rowdy NY fans banging on all the doors on their floor. Pittsburgh cops came and evicted angry fans:cop:. All happened in room across from him.:D

Nice start on that conveyor. I bought a couple industrial conveyors last week and they should be here this week. I think one will work perfectly under my crusher.

I'm going to Disneyland !!! Lol!!! Well guess cabin fever is our Disneyland!! You done harvest and ready for a few months of stayin warm?? Hope ya had a good harvest this year, I saw a couple setbacks with mom nature.
One thing about his dozer, it's got the weight!! I think they have access to a laser jet , maybe water jet but edges look vitrified. Whatever it is I wish I had access to one, I would be making everything from steel!! I've had good success with the drive train in my dozer so pretty much copying that. I'll post some more pics of it once I get a couple more pieces cut and fit.

16.5" to top of canopy, depending on how high a load can be heaped up that's the minimum height clearance.
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/RC%20construction/78369A9E-A889-46F5-B968-8AA6CCB19709_zpserkuidtx.jpg (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/cooperford/media/RC%20construction/78369A9E-A889-46F5-B968-8AA6CCB19709_zpserkuidtx.jpg.html)

24" wide gives me about 2" clearance on either side for width

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/RC%20construction/E719CC77-188B-4F62-9C0F-9FA03385C25B_zpsbftd5juk.jpg (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/cooperford/media/RC%20construction/E719CC77-188B-4F62-9C0F-9FA03385C25B_zpsbftd5juk.jpg.html)

Over all length is 3'. The bed is just under 24" long without canopy. And sharp rocks being dumped in will be good, put some wear scratches in her!!

Thanks for the measurements. I didn't realize how big that bed was.
Another size needed is the wheel base and width over the rear tires, also the clearance under the bed lip dumped to ground and to back of tires.
I checked my crusher and there is about 14'' between the flywheels and overall width is 22" x 36" long.
I think I have the same wire cart as you and it's about 17"W x 29"L That I am trying to compare.

RW, After seeing your measurements, I looked at the specs for the 785D and it appears you have it scaled 1/12. I am guessing your tires are about 17" wide.

Lol,, after cabin fever and some interest in the haul truck I am waiting on a couple big crates from tormach :). Possibly in a week and a half. And that is a bitter sweet issue,, sweet, because I'll have a big new toy , bitter because I have no clue how to use it!! So some serious learning to do!! And I thought partical physics was a hard subject, looking into learning CAD and CAM programs,,,,,, I think I would rather go back to learning molecular genetics!!! I'm so jealous! There was a used(but nearly brand new) Tormach CNC mill for sale locally about a year ago. The guy had receipts for over $20K worth of goodies and wanted $12500CAD for it. It all looked brand new. Someone told me I should go and buy it but as per usual I didn't have the cash so I didn't. It sold within 2 weeks of being posted. I still don't have the funds but I've kicked my *** for not "finding the money" ever since. You already have some design experience so I'm sure you'll be fine. Part of my hesitation was that I have none at all and would have to start from scratch with the expense hanging over my head. Now being on the wrong side of the fence, I could be out of business very soon anyway thanks to Trump Doggy so then the mill would only be a toy. Everyone knows I just hate having toys.....

Reg, I've been looking for a while and never find any deals like that!! Was going to source parts and try to do a conversion but the lack of my knowledge and limited learning capacity got the better part. Figure if I have to learn how to operate it with the cad and cam software it doesn't leave much room in my head for figuering out how to build one!!

Had a great time talking with you ken!! Wish we talked a little more, always have my head in a swivel at the shows!! Lots going on!! At least this time I remembered to eat, at least Friday and Saturday:)

Any time you are over my neighborhood Jim just let me know and I'll cut the grass in the field!! Perfect landing strip, well couple groundhog communities might pose a problem!! But if you are ever over here and have the time/room I would love to ride along!! Just something about flying that I enjoy!! I thought you flew in commercial to the area, I didn't realize that you actually flew yourself , damm cool!!!!!

Anytime anyone is around here just get ahold of me , welcome to stop by!! I'll let the little dogs out and keep the big guy in fence, when I can put my whole head inside his mouth he gets a little more respect!! And he is super protective of my wife, not a bad thing, never worry about her when she is walking two 160-180 pound doggies!!

Haha, bigger expectations?,, naaa. I'll just be able to make a better square block and cost a lot more to do!!!

Ha! Be careful what you wish for.lol Lots of people on Facebook that will kick and deflate your tires. Very few will inflate your bank account. The forum here has been much more productive for me. Not everyone buys but the ratio of serious modellers to looky loos here is great. Almost everyone here that has contacted me about a project has eventually had me do a build even if it wasn't what we originally talked about. This is a great spot to get the ball rolling! I've been using fusion 360 for making parts to 3d print. Far from efficient at it, but slowly getting down the learning part of designing the part. I've messed around with setting up parts for milling in the cam part of it. That's where I need to do a lot of learning. I may even take a couple day class. If closer to home I already would have but closest classes are 3 hour drive. Anything local is basically enrollment for a semester. And if I compare that time to me playing with it I'll probably figure it out befor class would be over. And only thing I hate about taking classes is they are usually targeted to a broad understanding and not as point specific as my learning needs to be. Nice thing about learning stuff in the computer world is you can always hit undo/delete!! And yes I do believe the simulate tool path is something I will always watch and detail.

The spot welder was from harbor freight. I got the 110 version but the 220v version was same price. Figure for what I'm using it's simple to just plug in wall outlet. The 110v states 1/8" capacity for welding and the 220 was 3/16 or something. 50% duty cycle. But the spots take about half second or less so more time positioning than welding. I know a guy that made one from a microwave transformer pretty simple but I would rather trust something factory made even from harborfright tools!! Works better than I thought! I can't pull, pry, or twist welds apart before the parent material would deform or rip. For my uses I don't mind getting the cheeper stuff for light or occasional use. Time will tell :)

This is a simple jig I made up to keep consistency on parts and the steps. I only needed to add a dab of filler on the first weld, then could use that weld for the rest and no filler on backside as that needs to be flat.

Working on running a dedicated electric line to it. Should have thought about this when I was originally doing electric!! Going to run external metal conduit instead of cutting and running in walls. It's torture right now because Friday the mill and stand showed up but all the goodies and extras are still a couple miles away waiting till Monday delivery. Can't set mill on stand till then as the lifting bar is with that shipment. But still have plenty to do and even if I had everything I still don't know how to "turn it on" yet :).

I guess it's official, it's a shop now!! I have some metal conduit on the walls!! Next I'm going to have to run some hard air lines to things. Will make it better to have air to machines instead of tripping over hoses all the time!!

Steve, I've had a few IFO's. Identified flying objects!! I'm not looking forward to seeing more or broken end mills , drill bits, taps, etc. I never paid much attention to feeds and speeds,, guess I'm going to look up info before I start. I think I've finally learned it is better to read directions first then take it slow. And I mean read not just look at pictures,,, lol!! I've always been able to slowly figure things out but now by doing it on my own it will get costly, so my New Years resolution is to try and read first ;). Good thing about cnc, I have to at least program it!! Maybe sometime in future they will have a thought machine:). Kind of like the thought present I got my wife for her birthday!! "Honey, I thought about getting you a present". (But I didn't). Doesn't that "it's the thought that counts" count for something??! Lol!!

Yeah I got smacked for that one:). And sent out to garage to think about what I did wrong,, forgot what I did wrong but made some nice hydraulic cylinders!!!!

Does it have an automatic tool changer too? Are you generation code with a cad cam system?

Yes it can be added, but for me and the expense no tool changer. However I am planning on getting the air draw bar, will make tool changes about 10 seconds. I'm using autodesk fusion 360 for cad and also for the cam. I really do t know anything to compare to but once I've figured out the gist of it, it is starting to make sense and become easier to navigate.

I know I haven't been making parts or much with the rc side of things but this is also the building side of learning. So I'll share a little more of the learning. And will be back to making parts and models soon!! But if anyone is on fence about getting a cnc or one of these machines, I'm very happy with it and after a little bit of hard learning and understanding it is now making sense and can see what a useful tool this side of building is going to be!! And even for me that never makes any notes or numbers for later ,, doing things on the computer and being able to look back at is going to be so helpful!! Guess I am moving out of my own stone age way of working/designing.

This was just a facing cut to clean up the perishable vise jaws im cutting.

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/RC%20construction/E5E76572-1B69-45B2-8206-5E62EF13C742_zpsqzf15c66.jpg (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/cooperford/media/RC%20construction/E5E76572-1B69-45B2-8206-5E62EF13C742_zpsqzf15c66.jpg.html)

A 3 min program took me almost 40 because I was so scared I would crash into vise or my programming was off by something!!! First part, just cutting sides down to dimension.

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/RC%20construction/CBAD985D-0231-42A6-A171-F131E6B252F1_zpsgqeqcxpw.jpg (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/cooperford/media/RC%20construction/CBAD985D-0231-42A6-A171-F131E6B252F1_zpsgqeqcxpw.jpg.html)

And all the tools I have are about brand new in sides, never really did cut much on the manual mill. Measured these parts and the were perfect, 6.000,,, out of 5 that I made one was 5.999". But being able to see the reflection and barely any tool marks,,,

http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/RC%20construction/CBF82BBB-A085-4F71-990C-28703AEEC5C4_zpswooqvzfl.jpg (http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/cooperford/media/RC%20construction/CBF82BBB-A085-4F71-990C-28703AEEC5C4_zpswooqvzfl.jpg.html)

And for you actual machinists, I took some chips and measured them. In my speeds and feeds I did have tooth load of .002. So it's doing pretty well given I don't really know much yet!! And I haven't had to hit that big shiny red button:lol:

Best way to remember feeds and speeds is surface footage controls your RPM's (based on material being cut) then you can vary your feed to get the chip load you want, usually figured in amount per tooth. Is your CAM software programing in feed per minute or feed per revolution? Very nice finish on the parts shown, looks like you're off to a good start. Don't feel bad about going slow on your first cut with a new program. I've been doing CNC for over 20 yrs and the first part off always takes extra time. Your mill will appreciate the extra care too!

02-03-2017, 10:36 PM
I agree with Dennis. Going slow never hurts unless it is in plastic. Then you melt things including delrin. You are very lucky to have the area available to use coolant. This will help with tool life and finish. Also lets you go faster when you get use to the machine. Like Dennis, I have over 25 years of CNC and manual machine experience to draw from. Even have my own machines but no area to use coolant, so I go slow to make my parts. Good luck with your mill!!

First run on a new program, or even setting it up again later is always a good time for caution. Saves tools, vises and dirty underware! I slow it all down and often single step through so i can read code as it spools and make changes if need be. Been doing it as a business since 1998, and sometimes use Mastercam to produce code, but usually write it out of my head.

You have a very nice finish on there. Doing great.
