Between sporadic work calls and thanksgiving I got some more done, I'll just post the pics. Hope you guys like pics, I always like to see what others do :)

Now on to the hard lines and trashing a lot of wrong bends!!! (Hopefully not but pretty sure:(). Some thing I've learned along way, I'm using stainless (forget the number ) but got the easy machinable stuff and wow it's like easy to cut!! Got new industrial (not hobby grade ) taps and cutting oil. It really makes a difference on this stainless. I always cringed when I had to work with stainless, work hardening and just tuff on my tooling. Now that I got correct stuff and tightened up the lathe it really isn't as difficult to work as I had experienced before. Yup I'm capable of learning!!! Lol!!! Now I have to drill and tap a bunch of 2-56 holes for the cylinder hardware. I use to use rotary table but for anyone fairly new to machining purchase a dro unit!! I don't know how I could do without!! Oh and took the time to get precise numbers on loading the seals and clearances on cylinder/rod. Have been exact down to .0005+\- on seals and .001+\- on length of cylinder/rods/pistons. So hopefully some long life before any leaks and not too much resistance on hydraulics.

I didn't forget, something like this stuff? It gives me some more ideas of making printed parts :bounce:

No problem, hope some might give some insight into the processes. And for those that are machinists, if you see something wrong or easier please tell :)

Well spent the better part of my toy time making parts to make tools to make parts:(.
First I had to make a cutter for 5/16 tubing die
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/D09B02D0-A407-405F-80EA-FECD4E8EEDA9_zpsydn9stmv.jpg

Then had to turn out a couple 5/16 dies, 3/4", 1" and a 1/2". And this is what I came up with to get those impossible tight bends in tubing (and making them look good).
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/A69F407B-A56E-4642-82D2-DD3A542A97A6_zps5ufkbtqc.jpg

That's the 3/4" bend. I don't know if I'll need a tighter bend.

Lil Giants
12-03-2014, 03:48 AM
Did you use heat to bend it or just bend it?

Cooper
12-03-2014, 10:11 AM
I did take the hand torch to it before bending. And let it cool then a bit of oil on the roller and bent to shape. The brass will re temper over time, not by a quench. Now if I can make some measure marks and degree lines I'll be in great shape!!

I wanted to take apart the boom and stick but the hardware is seized. Heated and pounded but a few will not move, stripped the heads so it's being worked on as one piece.

Replacing all the pivot parts and installing bushings and stainless shafts. Also trying to reinforce the arm but keeping it simple.

Once everything is together and ready for paint most of the hardware is going to be filled over and sanded smooth. I figure I can't take it apart and if I had a tig it would have been welded anyway.

Thanks Stuart, I would like to say I got them down but still finding ways to make um better.

This is my heat shield to prevent caps from coming loose. Probably didn't need it as a lot of room between heating area and caps but I would be cussing for a while if not. :).

Kerst

Silver solder on those parts and then just reg solder (lower melting temp) on the tubes and hardware. I think next cylinders I make I will braze those and solder the smaller stuff.

Never thought of drill rod. I know the tolerances are a lot more exact than the stainless I use but for these I think it's fine. And that tool steel might be more of a pita for me to work :). Although I need to get some to make shafts for prop balancers. (Center ground on ends but I will get a chance to machine that stuff).

All my hydraulic cylinder's shafts are made with drill rod. For tool steel it actually machines very well. It even threads really nice. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with what you are doing at all. Just another option.... I have found out that it does weird things after you have welded it though. It seems that it becomes very brittle after turning red:eek:.

Which grade are you using RCP? Could be overheating? Or the part is possibly cooling too quickly? I ran into that during my welding class at school (in the dead of winter) would weld a part and put it on my hand carry toolbox to cool in a different room, come back and there's some flaw... took me a minute to realize it was my routine not my welding causing the problem.

Other than that, Cooper very impressive work! Keep it up :D

Well if it machines not too bad then I will use that for next project. I did look into McMaster and the different tool steels, easy to machine.

Like I said before I can't take the boom apart cuz of seized screws (without a lot more work). I was using the 6mm shaft for centering the part on the table. That way I could make sure both top n bottom were lined up.

And bushings, bushings, bushings. Also used them for a bit of spacer.

And made this up, some added support for end of stick where bucket connects. I do want to add weight to the machine but not to the arm, rather like joes idea of plate steel on frame. Somehow I'll bulk her up :).

The drill rod could be in it's tempered form ( not heat treated ) .

I'm not sure what grade the drill rod I have been using is. The local metal supplier only has one kind so I just get what they have(blue paint on one end). I know that I overheated the piece I was referring to. I welded a very small piece to a big piece and then tapped it with a hammer to straighten it. It broke right off but not at the weld. Anyway, I went back to using mild steel for those parts because it's much cheaper and I save the drill rod for the important parts!lol

Sorry for taking your thread off topic RW. You're doing a great job on the excavator rebuild. By the time you are done it will be a whole new machine!

Cooper

Never off topic at this company:). I have realized lately that using the right tool and materials make a difference. I got spring steel before unheat-treated and it was like butter. Then torched it to harden and it got its properties back. Just have to have the knowledge, I may be slow,,,,, but can still learn :). Lol. Yes the 4200 transformation into a 345d cat is getting extensive. I'm not sure how the details will end up but the structure and functionality are what I'm aiming for. I'm not going to mess with the swing gear assembly, just get right mesh and everything tightened up. Although,, I may look into a more robust gear head???? And possibly a touch faster swing.

Oh this is just great! Another hoarder like me! Misery loves company!:D There's a special place in heaven for our wives....

Ha!! Lol!!! About peed pants!! Ya know, I've been into a lot of different stuff, ski racing, motorcycles, boats, rc stuff,, and pretty sure I've finally found my home that I've been unwittingly searching for!!! I've always love this stuff but never had the been or ability to get into it. I work for myself, small family business and my dad has a barn and several outbuildings. It's pretty safe to say if there is room there is something to put in it. Fittings, wood, metal, broken stuff, it all gets carefully thrown into some pile :). I'm pretty sure I could tell anyone where anything is and what shape it's in. It's a very well kept property from the road but inside the barn (non working farm) it's my ,and your paradise !!! And reason I say this is home is I've noticed that just about all of ya can see the potential in something like an old microwave turn table mechanism.

Yea, I told the wife when she happen to stop by when I was unloading the latest treasure that my mom had this old treadmill that she wanted me to take a look at, as it didn't work. Kinda funny as she immediately replied " why, that junk doesn't work and she already has one,,,,,,oh ,,, no,,, wait a minuet, did she ask you to fix it or toss it??" Then the fun deceitful creativity took over, hope she doesn't talk to her about me "fixing" the old treadmill!!! It will be in pieces and neatly stowed waiting to become another backyard landscape feature that will only improve property value:).

Haha! The one I have came from my wife's parents. It still worked but they didn't use it anymore as they have taken up running and swimming. I found out that it was going to the scrap yard so I told them I needed it! My wife and mother in-law gave me a weird look(the same look your wife gave you) as my father in-law and I quickly proceeded to go down stairs and prepare it for "transport". It is stowed in a canvas car shelter just waiting for the day that I decide I need a conveyor that's 6' long.lol I prefer to call myself a "re-purposer"(not a real word) rather than a hoarder. There isn't much that I don't see potential in.... It's how I was raised so I guess that explains why my shop is cluttered with "stuff" from one end to the other:cool:.

Started work on the bucket instead of hydraulic hard lines. This is the only saw I have. It's great for wood but I really hope I don't smoke it cutting metal. The main body of bucket is 22guage and the reinforcing it 16. That's really pushing this little saw.

Boy, with the width of the slot and the key stock it's about all my little mill can do with the slitting saw. Figured the slit would be the hardest operation for work holding so it was first.

Ok I started working n the hard lines,,, what a pita!!! Hats off to you guys that make this stuff look simple!!!!!

The bent ones on right were replaced as a small crimp is in the bend. I have only wasted about 12-14" so far :(. I really need some help, someone that will hold parts in place while heating, and not mind the 600 degree temp on fingers. (Wife was being a skirt!)

And just a double check on clearances.
http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q750/cooperford/B93AEAF8-03A7-40B2-9C36-B6368A2CFD6D_zpsnx31xe9f.jpg

And I must say sometimes I actually surprise/impress myself!! They actually look good and line up!!

Next time I do cylinders I will braze ends first, use silver solder on next parts and use 40/60 on last parts. I kept getting worried about de soldering pieces and having solder leak into polished cylinders. The solder job isn't the best aesthetically but functions. I pressure checked all areas. Got a bit of bloody lip by hooking air compressor up to lift cylinder and having my face directly above when I added a bit too much and too fast amount of air!!! Oops. Guess that's better than spraying brake cleaner into one hose that curves directly back :(. (Yea, did that too, and took off the glasses right before!!). I do have a nick name of r.w., --turns into r dub, which turns into r dumb!!

But all n all I got the hard part done!!! Now just have to wait on some longer sections of tube, maybe Tuesday.

I often wish I had someone with silicon fingers to help me hold small pieces while welding. It seems no matter how many tools I have for clamping there is always a situation where none of them fit. Great job on the cylinders. This will be the nicest looking China hoe out there when you are finished.

I did some modification to the cab. Trying to make it more 1:14 scale. I removed 1 1/4" off the bottom. Will have to replace one hinge location and trim the plastic yet. The one thing I don't have in the shop is a decent bandsaw, everything I've done so far has been hacksaw and cleaning up.

That's what I was looking for early this morning in barn when I noticed how light it was in the back. Looked at a rock pile and realized the wall had collapsed!! Now have a 6' by 2' hole in the foundation wall!! It's the back side of the earthen ramp leading to second floor from outside. And after looking around a bit the rest of wall about 40' looks "ok" . Some other exterior work high up on boards needes attention. I think I may take a drive over to the Amish farm and get them to finally do some much needed repairs. Have an old silo about 60' high, cement block style that silage has eaten away at about 35-40% of foundation blocks. That's been a big concern of mine for a while. Dad just thinks it's fine and doesn't need anything :).

So I forgot to pick up what I was after, I have a few old low voltage light power supplys. I was thinking they output 12 volts and I may use them as a landline power distrubutation house for the future screening plant and conveyor (that I plan on making )!!! So Mario, the cats out of bag and I forgot to pick them up. That's about the only progress I have in the conveyor job. Winter time is supposta be my slow time, I've been working more now than ever!!! Well if you can call this work :)

Was trying to figure out how to add some pounds (fairly easily) instead of making a new bottom plate , as joe suggested, I am trying to locate heavy parts, pump, batteries, ect,, towards back. I did decide to add a 1/2" piece of alum stock to the counterweight. And I also relocated it back a bit more , just a touch past 1/2". It also gives more scale 12'4" swing of the 1:1 cat 349.

Let's see how the clearances on the orings work and then I may be able to possibly make a set for you wood hog. I have to make one of the pistons a bit longer on the bucket cylinder. It hits the braces when bucket curled all the way. Longer piston will limit how much the bucket can curl. Would be simplest mod verses making new cylinder.

This is the face of frustration!!!!!!!

Pressure tested, had two leaks that were fixed. Tested with about 20psi, blew it up once and realized it's just a tank and didn't need to be pressure filled. At least not enough to split the seams,

Always wanted to have some sight glass or sight tube so I could know at a glance how much fluid. And the suction and return lines were made to hopefully enable running on incline and allowing air to bubble to top before suction. Also vent has a small cavity towards top so when machine is less than level fluid should stay and air escape. Yes hopefully I will be incline surfing and placing the ex in some rather unfavorable positions, working or loading.

And had some time to get a better idea of engine compartment /crow, hood whatever it's called. It looks a bit too tall, some more tinkering,,,,

That's looking great! I use the same type of "breather" on my tanks and it works well. I have them right on the top of the tank with no extension and there aren't any leaks. I'm sure with the pipe on there that will work until you're upside down.lol I went to the trouble of adding baffles and screens inside the tank on my Volvo. I don't believe any of it was necessary but I did it anyway because that what "real" tanks have. I also added a clear hose like you to see the oil level. My skidder doesn't have one and I have to remove the cap to see the oil height...It sucks! I like the way you have the tank tucked up front like that. Will you be able to increase the battery volume now or does it just allow for less clutter? How long does it take to print those size pieces with you printer? They look really good!

Cooper
12-19-2014, 10:11 PM
The print was done in four separate prints. The print bed is like 5x5". I'll just glue them together, I just use regular abs/PVC hardware store glue instead of mixing up acetone and strips,, it's all the same for me. The one with the stack was like 3 1/2 hours. The others were 2-1/2 to 3 hours. I'm planing on installing a fan inside them. But having it connected with touch terminals so no wires when removing / replacing batteries.

Hopefully the location of tank works out. I don't have all the pieces for her yet.

Ok well I might as well say it, I know Christmas time is upon us and I thought about getting my wife some real expensive presents,,,,, ya know I think we all have herd this before,,,," that's ok, it's the thought that counts". Right? Well I'm going to put that to the test as I decided to use her present funds to purchase premacon pump and valves, and a couple other nic knacks for the excavator. So we shall see if that saying " it's the thought that counts" as I "thought" about using those funds on her, but didn't. :). As some of you have gathered I don't always make the right decision, but do rectify the situation to a more favorable one (at a later date). Ya know that redneck engineering and the redneck love:).
We shall see or should I say to be continued,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Oh and I should have room to stack two 5amp 3s batteries in back to add more weight and more weight towards back. I do want to have things looking square and neat so more room is always better!!!

Just making a spacer for the piston rod would be easier than making a piston over again. That way you can adjust the length of the spacer to give you the stroke you want. Did that on full sized ones before with no problems.

Steamer, I'm most likely going to make new pistons. I'm using aluminum for them and they are pretty easy/simple to make. Plus I have one that is sized wrong on diameter, forget which one but I know I have to remake at least one. The stick cylinder could use a touch longer piston as well. Fully retracted it almost contacts the boom. Have to get with the R&D department Monday :).

I'll get some pics on the progress of the underside of hood. It's 1/4" thick shell. And I "thought" having it in print would be irrefutable proof of my sincerity. Yea, that went over like a lead balloon!!! Reminds me of an earlier years present, she (from now on referred to as plaintiff ) was quoted as requesting a more personal present. Tires, dog food, soap were not cutting it anymore. So I "thought " real hard and decided I would appease her (the plaintiff ) and get a more personal gift. Well I "the defendant" settled on a gift that would surly be more thoughtful and personal.
She "plaintiff " was excited when she saw the large gift wrapped superbly in shiny classy wrapping paper. Cut and folded as professionally gift wrapped. Excited and curious the plaintiff quickly and with great excitement sat down and started unwrapping what seamed to be a well thought of present for a deservingly loving wife as she was/is. But much to my surprise as the plaintiff opened the present and reviled a whole carton of toilet paper was when I the defendant began the actions of the accuser. Now after the initial confrontation had subsided between plaintiff and defendant (myself) I still could not think of a more "personal" present than toilet paper!! I even got the most fluffy kind I could find!! Now that's the irony of being a good listener and not thinking of yourself!!!

Thank you!! Hey who's cat articulated dump truck do you have? I see it in the background on your kat thread. I would love to get or build one of them!!

While I wait on my wife's Christmas present from premacon to be delivered I decided to try and make new drive wheel inserts for the dumptruck. Hey if the wife doesn't like her Xmas present from premacon I'm not going to send it back or have her exchange it, I'll use it!!! Done that before too!:). (Yea I don't know why she says she loves me ?:) ) anyway, I want the front wheels to be a touch wider stance, like maybe 1/8 or 3/16 wider each side. The axle I have is just a touch narrower than stock tamiya.

I warned you ahead of time , and time and time again that I was going to stop by when your not home!! Better check out back:lol:

Lol!! Sometimes I look at some parts that need made or fixing and cringe at how to machine them or how to set up the parts for machining. Then I realize how easy it is to design them on the computer and in a few min (45 min) have them in hand without cleaning up chips!! Love it!! And am realizing not everything needs to be made of metal. The abs is pretty strong stuff, same as Lego blocks.

And yea tires are the perfect look but just not cutting it for work. Even with the foam which is pretty soft stuff I had some issues of rolling. Plus the added width reduced my turning radius by hitting sooner on leaf springs. It's not that much but a little bit helps. I don't like how the tires on now look like those spare doughnut tires compared to the wides but function wins over fashion for me. I even got bead lock wheels but they were even more narrow than the steel wheels I have on now. Ugg, oh well my collection of spare parts grows :)

Now that sound like a plan (but I want the dozers too). The treadmill belt, I don't know how much use it had but seems good yet. As far a stretching, none. I cut one strip 3-7/8 wide. Could get three more strips. I really only need one more. The belt has like a felt/Kevlar backing. Mario if you want I'll ship you up a 4" belt.

Here ya go reg some more thought about 3d parts!! So far the only thing I think I have to buy or bought will be the angle iron, didn't have enough for the length. And motor. Speaking of motor , what speed should a conveyor be running at? 100rpm? 75? Everything I have runs like 1200 and up. I don't know if I should go the gear head reduction motor or chain/belt reduction drive. So give me some idea of what target speed I should be looking into. I don't know (yet) if I'm going the rc rout or going to a dial hard wired. Probably going to be shore powered so it may be hand dial for speed increase/decrease. I'm planning on moving about 2yards of cracker dust/ screenings to level under a 14 by 40 deck. Will be the perfect job for the rc stuff. And am planning on making two of these conveyors:). Maybe 3, still have to get to post office yet Mario :). Xmas presents lol!!

And trying to keep it simple, the rollers are loose on shafts that just slide together. The middle shaft cannot come out when the side roller shafts/rollers are installed. I don't know how long things will hold up but acetal rollers on steel shafts should hold up pretty long. At least for a good bit of my use. If rollers rub on sides of housing I could always throw in some thin bushing/washers, the plastic kind.

My wife has gone to her grams house about hour away till Sunday, leaving me to myself. Yea, he wasn't even eating shelled nuts!!! The dogs will not stop harassing me as wife is not here to coddle them!!! Had one work call, and I keep running into design issues with the conveyor!!

Great work on the rollers RW, now set printer replay to "100". (Seriously)

What's the width of the middle roller?

I intend to go with 12v gearhead motors @75-100rpm. 12v deep cycle battery, take it anywhere. ;)

Cooper
12-27-2014, 01:57 PM
Thanks, that's the rpm I was thinking too. Yea, I realize I need rollers, rollers, rollers!!! I don't want a vibrating conveyor!! What I have in mind for power is to have everything running on 12v dc. Out back I have several 110v dc outlets that I could plug into while at home. By operating off 12v dc I will be able to have that option also if I set up somewhere remote. I haven't yet checked if my low voltage transformers work but pretty sure they do. Going to set up something with banana plugs, so connecting to transformer or battery will be simple. Now the hard part is if I want to build a swing assembly to dump material in seperate piles. And to have an elevation mechanism.

Humm,,, ill trade you, a couple rollers for uhhh,,, one of them converted dozers!!! Yea, that should be good!!!

You want some? Might take a while to print. One roller bracket takes 44 min to print, then cutting some 1/8" shafts, and about 2min on the rollers. The rollers are made from 3/4" acetal, I didn't print them. Had a couple feet of acetal/delrin laying around. Speaking of have to get more, I purchased those off eBay, like $5 a foot of 3/4" stock. I looked at McMaster and other supply places and almost half price. So now knowing I need more I might try and find an even cheeper material. Mario gave me an idea of using wood with a cheep Teflon sleeve. Always looking for a cheeper alternative way. Because I now have to think of feeding another mouth!!! Lol!!! I owe ya reg for hooking me up with the awesome dump bed!!

Had some time today so me and the psycho, totally defendant on the wife, slobbering on all my stuff, wouldn't leave me alone, pooping in my sandbox, Great Dane played in the pit. I tried to take some video but my "helper " kept knocking over the tripod. And got the big cat out. For some reason one of the tilt servos quit working. Pretty good servo, hitec, it was working fine for a demo when the I laws were here but stopped as soon as I got to pit:(. I hope I didn't mess something up with radio when I was setting up dump truck steering. Oh well something else to fix. I have to relearn the mixes for titandigs anyway.

I decided to use some flat top bracing in between rollers. If belt droops any it will slide on metal flats. Well that's the plan:). I don't know what kind of finish was on the perforated angle metal I am using. I sanded areas to be welded and still it did not want to arc well. Left a white soot like it has a zinc or galvanized coating. It appears to be just metal but was a pain to weld. It's turning into a fugly project, far from good but good from a far!!! I got the material from the scrapyard, and not always knowing what it is I guess. Not to mention I'm not that knowledgeable of welding.

Your two main rails appeared to be galvanized which will explain the white looking residue and while welding the gas it puts off will contaminate your shielding gas from the welder. I am assuming you using a MIG welder and you would have to remove almost all of the coating and possibly acid wash the parts to get the most of it out but if it is good galvanizing you won’t get it all out.

Thanks guys, yes I guess prep would have , or should have been a first step instead of last step;(. I do have somewhat of a ventilation system, at least gets gas/fumes to the outside. Garage door opened a crack with window open with fan. Cold air rolls in from outside and warm air gets pushed out through top window. In wintertime it works pretty well. I figured with the white residue it was galvanized. I use to seeing galvanized stuff looking ruff and silverish. Again my ignorance will be my teacher for next time :).

Nice to see you back in the groove RW.
Your conveyor is looking super sweet! Can't wait to see it with rollers installed, a fresh coat of paint and some dirt on the move. :)

As a suggestion for support legs, how's about using a screw drive like Regs dump boxes as a way to power adjust the conveyor height to whatever you want or need?

I'm still along way from building a funnel for mine but my first attempt is going to be like what RVJim has posted. Seems simple enough and effective.
I'd add the link but for some reason my IPad won't copy paste links on here anymore?

Beautiful job RW! That thing runs straight and smooth as silk
Speed looks great also. What RPM did you go with?
I'm very curious to see what kind of angle you can set it at and still carry material. Such a nice job on the rollers and getting a nice dish to the belt. I bet it will work great!
Set that beauty to about 60 degrees, throw some dirt on it and let's see what happens.

Rpm? Uh,, yea, don't know, lol,, the motor was harvested from an old massage chair and sprockets are a couple teeth different. That was running on 7.2v. Originally I planned on 12v but without adding a trimm pot I just hot wired that 2s pack. I haven't got into much of the electrical part yet. I'm still planning on running 12v with a pot for speed control. I'll get the rpm of what the video was running tonight and post so we both will know :). 60 degrees ehh? I'm not going to make this power elevation but will try and make it adjustable to max allowable incline. If I can get material to stay at 45 I will be happy. Might even make it on skids with detachable wheels so I could use a machine to move location of spoil piles. To be honest I never thought about much more than getting the belt moving straight:). Now some more planning !!!and some sort of funnel too. Would be cool to have this in a pit so the dozer could push material into.

Your drive roller should be pulling the belt. Looks good, runs quiet & smooth.

I think you'll be hard pressed to get much more than 20° without too much rollback.

nice conveyor, have you thought about gluing some teeth to the belt to allow you to have a higher incline if need be.
I found on mine (4 feet long)about 15 degrees was the max before the rocks started to roll down hill, also if I slowed it down you can go a little steeper.

Ouch! I'm not liking the numbers you guys are saying but I never doubt people who speak from experience. At those angles I'm going to need a lot more space to make this all work.
I was wondering if drive roller must be on the top end? The way it is now all the belt tension is on the bottom which allows the top to have slack and maintain that curve or cupping effect? I guess with heavy material trying to push up a loose belt won't work though..... Ok. Never mind :)
I like Lou's idea using the leading edge of a wiper blade as paddles or teeth on a belt. Just not sure how well they will adhere to the treadmill belt?

I'm maxing incline out at 70~ or 20 degrees whichever 90 is. Scale wise the pile should have a max height of 25' and a base of around 60-70'. For what I have planned it wouldn't be a max elevation. More for transferring material. What I really need is about six of these lined up for moving material. If this one works out I may built two more for quick transfer of material. I'm planning on spreading cracker dust/ screenings under my deck. And deck is 14x 40'. Lots of work for the perfect sized "toys" under the deck with height of about two feet.

The 4 inch width conveyer I had in the basement 5yrs ago was at an approx. angle of 17° & I was getting some roll back of larger dirt lumps & rocks. That was the entire reason for originally building the dirt lump crusher -> the finer the dirt, the less that rolled back. The dirt I was elevating was bone dry too!!! it's almost like beach sand.

Moist dirt and crushed rock, I'm sure you could get greater than 20°.

Your belt RW doesn't seem to have much stretch & bottom drive will probably work fine for you, but you will have to run the tension tighter than if it were top drive. While you're still in the building phase, I'd recommend that you fashion some kind of brush wiper just ahead of the bottom drive roller to keep out foreign material that would affect your roller's traction or jam it up.

I have this problem of fine dirt/dust somehow getting on the inside of the belt of the conveyer that's on my dirt lump crusher, it's a bottom drive with a 5" diameter roller with a 4" width hay baler belt. Even with the conveyer tilted a wee bit, any minute amount of moist dirt that goes through the crusher, moist dirt fines will build up/jam up on one side my conveyer drive roller & stall out the crusher completely. One of these days I'll get ambitious, tear my roadway apart & take that crusher & conveyer to the shop to make some very needed improvements! There's over 200lbs of machine there caked in fine dust to monkey with. :(

It would definitely work but I would be worried about doing damage to it if you curled the bucket inward too much.
On a 1:1 excavator the thumb relief is always set lower than the bucket relief valve. No relief on a linear actuator.
I mean, the hyd power of the hoe is probably way stronger than what the firgelli can handle and you'd have to be careful with it?

Yea I figured that actuator wouldn't be the best option. I more so was trying to one up reg :). But I do have this actuator laying around??? At some point I would like to install a rotary cutter like the small dremmel saw blade on the stick. Kind of like a harvester. I would be able to get under the deck and cut all the little saplings and runners that are growing up into deck. Another project :). So far I've spent about two hours placing and replacing pump, valves, electronics into different positions trying to find the best and most convient fit. Still placing and replacing!! Brain and eyes were starting to bleed!! But I did realize a lot or real estate is in the vertical area :).

Lil Giants
01-11-2015, 08:18 AM
The Firgelli linear actuator in that IzzyBuilt dozer, it doesn't take much force to move the blade up & down, free wheeling the actuator. I didn't notice before installation what ratio it was. I see your actuator there is the 150:1, that might be too high & not free wheel. I doubt you'd injure the actuator anyway.

Say, did you send your email to Firgelli for round bodied actuators? Maybe we'll see those in the near future & something like that would look perfect on your model.

Do you have any trouble those push lock fittings? I have one on the 4206 that I can't get to quit dripping and now I see on this hoe I'm building that one out three of them tank fittings is dripping too. Just push the hose in & pull back to lock it tight, right?

RCP57
01-11-2015, 10:09 AM
I have those fittings on all of my hydraulics except the pump connections on my Volvo because I am using standard size hose and fittings(pump is oddball G1/8). I find that the small fittings are fine but the larger 1/4" lines start to weep over time. I bought some of the larger fittings from Princess Auto and they are the worst for it(read Chinese quality). What happens is every time the pressure comes up the hose pushes against the barbs that hold it in place. Eventually it wears the hose and starts to leak. I have never had one come apart though so in that regard I am happy. You just might have to change hoses ever once and a while.

Cooper
01-11-2015, 10:52 AM
I think the leftover actuators I had laying around are a bit too big, I think some shorter stroke would be better and yes joe I would go with a little less power, would rather have it stall or force retract than anything. The thumb and harvester attachment will most likely end up being rain day work when digging in summer is getting routine. :).

Joe, the push-lock fittings are great in most applications. Some things to consider. Correct size, angle of hose force, and in my opinion these fittings should have a hard insert to go inside the tube about 1/8" to keep consistent pressure on seal. But the small size doesn't really allow that. Most of the fittings I have been using are only rated for 80~100psi but I've been using them in 300psi range. And the way they work is a tooth washer is on a lock angle to prevent tube from backing out. An o ring is all that makes the pressure seal. To remove the tube all you are doing is releasing the lock washer/spring (whatever ya want to call it). If you got a leaker might just as well replace fitting, the seal may be damaged. BUT, a big issue is to make sure the hose is cut square and sharp edges are bad. 99% of the time just using wire cutters and stuffing it in the hole works:). I cut with razor blade and sometimes run through a lighter flame. (Don't want to heat to the point of balling the ends). Or better yet maybe a heat gun:). As far a locking , yup just push in don't worry about having to pull to lock, it will lock. A good idea is to hold hose next to fitting and eye about where hose should bottom out. Then you have a better idea if hose has been fully inserted. On the 1:1 size fittings I use on small home waterline repair jobs I will so,entires run into a fitting/tube that is a real bugger to seat. And had a situation where a whole 100' roll of waterline had a defect in outside (it had a very small lateral groove or scratch) and couldn't use those type of fittings. They would leak. So another thing to consider if a small scratch or nick, cut on outside of tube it may leak. Uggg enough hoseing around I'm heading to the garage!!! My coffee got cold!!

Lil Giants
01-11-2015, 11:58 AM
It's one of the return lines from the valve back to tank, about 6mm OD. The other 6mm return line seems to be fine. I made sure to cut all lines squarely with a razor blade. Those yellow 6mm hoses are quite soft rubber & maybe I have some brass tube that will fit correctly in the ID, thanx for the suggestion, makes sense.

I used a heat on the suction line, quite a stiff clear rubber/plastic line about 8mm OD, to put a bit of a S curve in it so neither end of the hose was binding on either push lock fitting. I don't see it leaking. I think that's what my problem may be with the 4206 suction line, I need to heat/form the clear hose more so the clear hose is not pulling at an angle on the fittings.

The 4mm push lock fittings have 20 bar pressure on them & I have never had a leaker. But then the 4/2.5mm hose is very rigid walled.

Looking at various builds on german forums of this Fumotec 490 I noticed a lot guys didn't use the push lock fittings at all.

I'm thinking she should have some oil running through her vinyl veins by the weekend. I may have bitten more than I can chew. I've been flying the little foamies for awhile and been interested in the quads. My wife loves photography and I have been thinking of getting a drone that she can film with. (While I get to fly it). So I also have been looking at upgrading radios for everything. A friend of mine that is pretty competent in heli radios turned me onto a frsky tranais. I can hook it up to computer, set up all the mixes, open source programming , for under $200. 18 channels ect. So I decided to "try" this one out. It was that or going the $$$ spectrum way. A good bit of diggin on my part and once I learn more of the tec stuff I've been told (for all of my needs) that I will be happy. So if it arrives by Thursday and I can be discipline enough to read the ex might be moving on her own by then.

Looking real good coop, nice and tidy! I have one of those pumps on order too, just waiting on Premacon to send it.

I have a Taranis and think its great, you won't be dissapointed, programming is a little tricky to start but once you get the hang of it its pretty limitless as to what it can do. By the way, its only 16 channels unless you add another module, then it becomes 32

Cheers

And some more mods to the wheelhouse. I have been trying to "plan" for all the wires and electronics so any real estate is not off limits. The cab was cut down to look more 1:14 scale and I moved the back window up to match the new hood.

Hopefully they all woke out well radar:)

Well I did it, the new $200 radio came today. Opensource firmware, free range programming :). I've been wanting to get more involved with the tx side of these things and after looking around and planning ahead for the future I got a frsky taranis. I know I will never out grow this. 16channels and an open module bay in back for my spectrum stuff that could net me 32 channels. And it has the sliders on the side that I wanted to control tracks. A software that I can program radio on the computer, run sims, and then just flash it to radio. I know it's going to be a learning curve for me but I've been wanting to streamline my tx/rx stuff and the $30 rx was the way to go for me. So as I learn a bit more I'll try and keep up on my radio progress.

It's Friday and I should be doing some bill paying work but hey, today is the only day they pay me!! Work all week and only get paid for Friday!?!?? (I tried working before but didn't like it!!). Lol!! Got about another hour of Richard-off 'in then got some work stuff. I spent some time last night trying to figure out how to keep the cab door closed. They used 5/32" magnets to secure it originally. I have some small magnets but just too big so I decided to dig them out. Didn't want to heat the adhesive up as fear of demagnetizing them so mill them out.

Yes to all your questions above - designated area for the rc group, ac power provided, bring as many of your models as you like, there's tables provided for you to sit down & do any last minute adjustments (bring your own tools)...

I flew in to Allentown, Pa, Smallhaul picked me up at the airport & chauffeured me around for the wkend (thanx buddy), I had a Blast, it was a great show to attend. But now that the dates have changed to mid April, that's about when I get busy with a new farming season.

Hot rod excavator lol. I had controls hooked up but a bit wrong. I did change the control pattern to sae (cat). So now I definately will have to put a couple hours of indoor excavating in. ( i.e. Litter box ). Still a bit of work to do. If not finished by cabin fever time it will at leas be working naked. I still have home garage time before real work kicks in so shouldn't be a problem not having logos and new paint ready to be oiled and scratched up.

Cooper
01-18-2015, 11:30 PM
Yes he is quite the house runner!! He knows where the one plant that is a hanging basket is in the master bathroom, runs there all through house and digs in it!! Then will take laps on top the couch and behind, back to kitchen, grab a nut and head to the top cabinets!! Yes I have the step stool never put away because I have to catch him or suffer the nut debris left on top the cabinets. Long pants and sweatshirt whenever cage is open. He actually plays with my hands, bites fingers (not hard but like a dog play bite) and jumps and just flips out!!! Usually try not to handle the wild animals too much but he is not able to be released till warmer weather and needs to run.

Ugg, ya know its time to stop before parts go flying,,,, I was making the contacts for fan in hood. Making it held on with magnets and brass contacts for power to hood. No wires when removing hood to change batteries. And I don't have m2 taps so I was guessing at hole size. First was too tight, second was snug. I was just screwing a screw in without tapping, it's plastic so no biggie. But I knew it was tight and figured I would toss the threading screw afterwards. Well one more turn before bottoming out the head and then the head stripped!!! Dahamm!!! I knew I should have drilled one more time bigger!! Now the part that I had about two hours into figuring out and machining is junked!!! Ohh I hate that when you know you should be doing one more thing and try to shortcut!!! Well next part wouldn't take as long and probably be better as I know what I want!! Uggg!! Time for bed !!!

So which way is the fan turning, exhausting air out the top?

Cooper
01-19-2015, 05:29 PM
In the pic air is blowing down into compartments. About 30% battery and 70% pump/esc ect.. I have the ability to reverse the fan unit. Not electrically because it's a computer fan but can physically invert it to blow air out. I was at a toss up on what is best. Air down will pull dust and dirt into vs pulling air out doesn't cool as much. But the way the side vents are placed air can flow from sides as well as under boom. I may reverse it to pull warm air out as it may lessen dust. Don't really know till some dry dirty days. How are others? Blowing air down onto components or trying to pull hot air out?

Supermario
01-19-2015, 06:34 PM
The way I see it. Hot air rises so why try forcing it down when you can help pull it up?
And I think your right about the dust factor, another reason to push air out vs draw In.

Cooper
01-19-2015, 07:43 PM
Yeah that's how 1:1 are,,, the fan is just wedged in there. It's pretty snug that it wouldn't come loose but I can still dig it out and invert it. So that's what I'll do , have to file off the other mounting tab it has and ya wouldn't see the sticker anymore :). Hope mom doesn't get into any hardcore gaming on her computer and miss the cooling fan:lol:

Exclusive, don't hesitate to remind me of any events in our area, I'm in central pa, Williamsport (or close) hopefully when ya see it , it will be painted ready for work. If by York I may have some paint worn off by then and have any bugs worked out.

Stuart, I'm running the radio off the pump esc, so no I didn't cut any of pump wires. The two drive esc and slew ring esc (original one from the 4200) are using just the signal wire (yellow ones for drive motors and white wire for turntable esc in the pics ). And yes the pumps are super quiet. I haven't put more than 300psi (?bar) through it but pump makes easy work at 60%~70% speed to get that. Kinda letting everything break in a bit while testing.

Truckmaker, the railings are 3/32 brass rod, no reason to mess with crimping tube and solid is easy to work with. Originally I was going to make aluminum bolts with 3/32 holes in top for railings and could thread the aluminum to also act as a bolt to hold top plate on, but I think having 1-72 bolts will look a bit better. Having som fun in adding scale appearances. :).

Happy happy!!! Joy joy!! This was part of my Xmas from wife and myself, it finally restocked and picked up today. Im not partial to grizzley stuff but they are in my backyard so to speak. It's a 10x22 variable speed lathe!! Always wanted to be able to change speeds easily!!! Now it's up on the stand , had to bring over the motor hoist. Now the fun begins, tear down and make better!! And I did get a quick change tool post too!! So I guess this means I'm not purchasing a adt but have to make one. Darn!!! :)

In builder you talking about that international? She is a well used and abused toter. We just use it for spotting homes, been out of road service for about 11years. Has an omni hitch on back, soo nice having that hitch!! I don't think it's been out of low range for a couple years. Too expensive to keep a truck on the road unless I'm hauling at least one a week.

We had a kW before the IH, static ball (up/down) only thing I remember about that truck was it a pain spotting a lot longer wheelbase and at the time I missed the last step climbing out. Just over a knee reconstruction surgery (had been little over a year) and basically tore the replace ligament from that :( waited another year and did it all over :(. Only problem I've had with the IH, air compressor replaced and the right front brake plunger sticks. Just don't use it enough. A couple taps with hammer and she works. Smokes a lot. Always fun to go by the neighbors and punch it when the wind is right :). Lol!!

And when the wife came home she said a package was on front door, I got a dro for the lathe. Got it off evilbay, same place I got the one for mill. It's on the cheeper side but no problems with the one I got for mill. Glass scales and sealed pretty well. Oh the fun part of installing!!! Had to pull the fan off the motor so I could tap a hole. So I got started on milling the center grouser out, only have 80-90 more to do!!! The jig I made clamps them at the link area. I can mill about 3 before having to move the track. Only problem is they are not identical and some concave/convex slightly. But once sanded up a bit they will look made that way :)

I believe they are cast, yes steel 9w. Late last night I finished up milling all the centers out. As not knowing what I'm doing I found out that a deeper cut and faster feed using a carbide end mill dry was cutting better. Air and a little cutting oil worked best and really made the job go faster. Glad to get that done, hopefully done with steel for a while. I always end up doing a bit of self surgery digging metal slivers from my hands when working with steel.

And again I'm starting another project without finishing another, Great Dane style :). I am going to try and make a folding gooseneck trailer. I'm planning on using full size wheels (have an excess of em) and I figure the little bit of extra height will be better suited than a true lowboy for clearances on my dirt roads. Top off deck will be top of tires. And I may make this with the actuators I have. Plan on making it a complete separate tx/rx so I can stay in my lounge chair while loading ;).
Similar to this one but probably three axles,

Oh and wasn't thinking when working on the hoes lights. The stock light buckets were supplied from tx with a switch. The ones I got from rc4wd are 12v, so I decided to just cross them to the battery (12v) to make sure they worked before soldering/wiring up. Oops, the electrical doohickey from stock was a voltage regulator or tx switch of some sort and they are not 12v!! The got pretty bright for about a second!! And they went dark:(. An they were those bright 5chps or whatever led, so now have to get new led or lights:(. I know better but one of those oh s$|#, why did I do that moments!!

Hey joe I got the printer back up and running,

I like the sliding axle trailer. With the parts I have I figured a folding gooseneck is doable. The parts on my shelf need a home :). I'm going to try and use the firgilli actuators and full size tires I have. After mocking some parts up I may still have to have a little bit of drop for the back wheels. Am trying to avoid purchasing smaller wheels. Kind of a home inventory build I guess. At least that's how most of them start right? Lol!!! I have been using dry graphite on the dozer, clings to aluminum well and cheep. The stuff I have is in a bucket and just brush on. Dirty but effective :)

I have a mini-barn delivery guy that has one heck of trailer, extends an extra 20', can rotate the barn 360 degrees, dovetail moves left/right, has drop wheels to lift and move complete trailer left/right, rollers, winch, all the bells and the remote controller is close to the size of a bigger cell phone!!! Next time I see him I'll get a pic

Boy reg I could really use your expertise in welding some alum!!! I may try and set up the mig for aluminum. Never done that, I just need to get a bottle of gas. I think all the welds I would need to do will be hidden :). I could make it out of sheet steel but think that may lend to be on the heavy side? And I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to make it a drop deck with the wheels I'm using. I think I remember somewhere you guys moving the fifth wheel up to get more weight on the front. How far do you guys move it? 1/4"? The truck is using stock tranny but high turn motor. It would be nice if I can haul the excavator less than 60# if I remember. But before I get too involved with this I am going to see if the configuration I'm thinking of with the actuators I want to make sure they will lift it. (Instead of the usual build it and then find out ;) )

I think the trailer will look awesome, especially if you get the actuators working and dialed in. As far as pulling weight, even though you have a higher turn motor i would highly recommend a gear reduction, easiest to use at this point so you dont have to modify much would be the one rick sells at garden. Its on the pricey side but well worth the money by far. I can stand on a trailer and my Ct 660 will pull me with no problem or hesitation, so moving an excavator or any other machine you put on it should not be a problem. Good luck and keep the pics coming!

Looks like a great start! I like it with the full size wheels. Certainly more typical of what you see here on the island anyway. I am no welding expert that's for sure. I have only tried MIG welding aluminum once with a spool gun so I can't give much advice there. Aluminum is fussy so make sure you remove any anodizing, paint or mess from your material before welding or the weld will be porous, weak and ugly. I agree with Brian that you need a gear reduction of some sort. I don't see you having any problem making your own though if you want to spend some time and save some money.

I'm still in the concept phase, I bent some 22 gauge steel up to make some I-beams. With some well placed supports and gussets it might not be that heavy with steel. Would save a lot of work for me. Again still not sure what direction I'm going. I have been wanting to get some of that muggy weld.

Use to build them and give to nephews once home. But now they don't play with Legos so I've kept them for myself:).

I made some pieces of I-beam from 22 guage steel. Put a little camber in them, love to see trailers with camber in. For just tacking together they are stronger than I thought and light too. So I may go the steel build. Basically a steel skeleton with wood decking. Gonna try and make it able to handle 60#.

Yup, still trying my luck with a folding neck. I have two actuators that I think will work. And even if they don't have enough power to lift a full load I could add two more for a total of 4. I've seen this style trailer with four hydraulic cylinders so it would still be somewhat scale. Only problem I see so far (more for sure) is I may end up having to get shorter actuators.

Joe I do like the sliding axle trailer and great build on that one!! Thanks for sharing :)

Made the outer beams today and some cross members. So far I'm planning on housing battery and electronics above the rear axles. Long wire run for servos (actuators) but takes a touch weight off front.

I'm slowly getting better at welding this thin stuff, but it's getting decking so they aren't going to be seen, as long as I don't flip it over :jaw:

Depending on how many channels your transmitter has, just throw another receiver back there in the trailer and plug into the channels you're not using on the tractor. You can link as many receivers to a transmitter as you want in parallel. If you want two dump boxes to go up together just plug the ESC into the same port on both receivers and they'll both work together! Also you'll have to get a BEC to power up the receiver back in the trailer unless you have an ESC for a screw drive or something else

Blasted and ground, need a bigger blast cabinet!! If I make the wheel frame I doesn't fit in cabinet :(. And starting to figure out a spring (air bag) suspension set up. The arms may be short but it's what alumninum stock I had.
