Thanks rob, I'll be ordering a couple tonight. What do you recommend about the bearings? As far a maintaining them? Tear down every year to re grease? I know when I got it I had it completely apart, to finish building it that the factories don't do. I used a specific bearing grease, don't know where it got to:( I haven't taken it apart since last year. But haven't had much use on it up till now.

hey Cooper if you by chance have the Grizzly Mill that is the same as the Seig X2 . The have stated that those gears get chewed up as time/use passes, I have a Sieg X2 and did the little machine shop belt conversion to elimate that problem. Jut a thought. Steamer is correct they made it with those gears so they tear up before the machine.

If I got the right machine as yours from Grizzly the main spindle bearings are 6206-2RS. The 2RS means the bearings are sealed for life and don't require any more grease. I too have had problems with off shore bearings and they tend to be noisy. One thing to watch for is side load! if you had the spindle apart when you got the machine, you may have put some on when you put it back together without knowing it. Tapered rollers need preload when going together but not ball bearing. The reason ball bearings don't last long in a mill is, if your milling it's a top load on the bearing but drilling is a side load and that wears them out quicker.

Thanks for the info on the mill, have to order a couple of those gears. Once I move this spring I may convert to cnc.
I started on frame. Going to get it roughed in first. I may have to make the center mount for the A arm of axle a bit more forward on account of length of motor. So waiting on that to get attachment points. Frame is made out of 1/2" x 1.75" alum.

I don't know how she knew but she found out I framed the dog for eating the doughnuts and now she is wondering how much else he has been blamed for!! Lol!! Got sent to garage ! Again!!!
But all is good, aside from having a stomach ache. Got axle set up for locating shock and frame mounts. I really didn't want to mess with unbolting the vice but just had no way around it. I wanted to mill it bolted together so everything lines up when done. Had about an hour setting up. A lot of that time was trying to use the vice. Should have just unbolted it to start with, 10 min set up time after I did!!!

I know things look pretty chunky, once all the arts are fitted and I know they will work I will be trimming and adding detail. I've been putting off mounting the differential pinion shaft but decided better do it. The bearing protruded a bit from axle housing so I had a lot of set up time with the 4 jaw chuck. That piece is also connecting outer axles together and a frame will mount to it. I also wanted to make a bit of play for bearings. Would rather add some shims to get correct mesh of gears than have to mill some more out. Not fun on set up to do that. :).

Question for you guys, the differential I'm using has x number of teeth on pinion and x number on the big gear. Is that a reduction I should consider into wheel rpm? Like if pinion has 25 teeth and gear has 100 is that a 4:1 reduction? After thinking about this beast and weights wanting to haul, I may be putting motor under cab like 1:1 machines using the reduction gearbox same as the 1:1 machines. Gives me more room in front of axle. Yes over engineering this heavyweight. I've been crunching the numbers and just thought of the differential aspect, I did not figure that into the final rpm. I'll go and count teeth on differential pinion and spur gear and find out numbers. Thanks guys.

The diff is 11 on pinion and 33 on spur, so that is a 3:1 reduction I need to factor in correct? And the black motor is been living on a shelf for a few years , it's been begging for some electricity!! 1200 kv and the other out runner has a low kv, 256? But is a bit slow for what I was using it for direct drive in a springer tugboat. Probably too low of a kv (rpm/volt) for this use.

Possibly making a true air ride,,, probably not but it could work. Was planing on springs with orings as guides. Breather hole will be hidden on bottom and between rod and cylinder.
Was pushing down as hard as I could to compress the trapped air. Almost could bottom but not quite.

And got this, I decided to place the motor ,yup the big black one, under the hood so to speak and have the planetary gearbox in front of axle with a transfer gear to motor. Just like the 1:1. Why make this simple?? Always like way engineers have done the hard work on the 1:1 machines. So copy that :).

Hey Cooper....great job on the axle and susp. cylinders look great!! If you use a very small vent hole in the cylinders it might act a bit like a shock restricting the movement while the suspension is unloading...just a thought...
Something to remember/consider is the diameter of the tires when trying to figure out the ratio....my truck also has 8.5" tires and it is geared to turn the wheels at about 38rpm, 8.5 x 3.14159 = 26.7" circumference , 38x26.7=1014.7 inches per minute or 84.5 ft per minute. The banebots motor gear box actually turns at about 65-70rpm not the stated 90, at least the one I have turns at that speed, the 540 motor turns at 16800 divide that by 256 which is 65.6rpm on the output shaft. Here is a link that might also be helpful on calculating the needed power/torque....
http://www.robotshop.com/blog/en/drive-motor-sizing-tool-9698
Putting the motor up front and using a drive shaft will make it more like the real deal...should look great!!! I used chain drive for two reasons....easy to change gear ratios and the linear actuator is right in the middle of the frame rails so there was no way to run a drive shaft to the rear end. Did you do any more work/testing on the telescopic cylinders??? We have one in the shop at work, I think it's off a 789 not a 785 , one reason for the double acting telescopic cylinder is to decrease the time it takes to lower the box instead of just letting it drop under its own weight (time is money) , the other reason is it help hold the box down tight to the frame shims which helps add overall rigidity.
Looking forward to seeing the progress on this build...keep up the great work!!!

Some more done on shocks. So far they are just an air shock. Can push my whole body weight (as much as my hand can take) down on them without bottoming and they spring back. Maybe just go with air ride:)

Ok got another gearbox today, a bit more robust, just a size comparison on planetary gearbox and motor along with one of our truck motors. :) gearbox is 4:1, 3:1, 3:1, and diff is another 3:1 reduction. Should end up around 90rpm. (Or 100) motor kv isn't an exact science) and with this gearbox I can make the last two or one stage a 4:1 if I need more reduction. I've settled on plans, rear with 3:1 differential, planetary gearbox with reduction in front of axle, two transfer gears to get driveshaft higher in frame, driveshaft to motor housed under hood. Very similar to the actual 1:1 machines.
All in my head at this point. I may start making some notes for reference;)

Yes, I need to make a transfer gear to get the driveshaft higher before entering planetary gearbox. Now I can just cut the size shaft I need right from the gear stock, no set screws, nothing to come loose. The pinion gear on gearbox has a key way 1/16" I think? So all I will need to do is cut an external key way, that's easy.

Merry Christmas everyone!! I hope everyone and family is well and Santa brought lots of goodies!!
Haven't had much time lately so everything is just rough parts/shapes. Details will be milled in once everything is proven to work/fit. Decided to make a new pinion shaft to allow gearbox to be as close to diff as possible. Also some 3d printed parts will be fitted to give more detail towards end. Cut the pinion and a shirt shaft, I will be brazing that together for strength.

Now i don't know what the motor will actually spin. Kv is not an exact science and these TP motors are cheep so the windings very well could be off a couple hundred at most. And with such a big motor I really don't want to be maxing it out on top end. I think the power will be there and I can limit speed with radio if needed.

Probably don't need the bearing there but doing it anyway. Two bearings just inside the block on shaft. The exposed one will be in diff housing. It will also add to the integrity of the mounting.

At this rate I will be here for a day, have to take gearstock from about 1.2" down to .3125". I may go with shaft and keyway but then I have to broach gears. Wanted to keep one piece shaft and gear. Lathe is 10x22 variable speed. Using insert cutter.
Or is it no matter what going to be timely? I just don't know with steel cutting.

12-29-2015, 07:27 PM
That gear stock material is really nice to machine. You may want to put a center hole and use the tail stock for better support. You should be able to hog more off faster.
As far as taking all day; It's a hobby you aren't making any money and its the fun of doing this. I would go with the one piece gear and shaft. Less worry, besides by the time you make a shaft key it bore the gear and broach you will have way more time than just turning the gear stock.

No stop, but I did center hole and live center. That was one thing I was worried about, pushing the shaft. I turned a piece of alum and cut it into three for a soft jaw. Clamped down pretty good but still having the teeth there. Have been checking it a couple times.
Yeah, I've got more time than anything :). Thanks Steve, see you in a couple weeks?

Yeah I need to start getting stuff around for the show also. Messed up my shoulder with work stuff, can't lift above my head so hand cranking wheels at home has been therapy :). You are right about that gear stock being easy to cut. I guess I base my steel experience on hardware store stock. Doesn't cut well, and never a good finish. Last project I got steel ordered, easy to machine kind. Slowly learning to get the correct materials to make the job easier. That shaft wasn't bad to cut :) my inexperience showing again:).

The smaller gear on shaft is the one inserted into gearbox, it will be keyed to shaft. Top gear will be connected to a driveshaft. Only hard part now is getting the correct spacing on gears into gear housing.

Brazed an end onto the final driveshaft. Had to make the end a bit bigger diameter so no slop would be in the diff ends. Some play, and the bronze is a bushing for shaft to rotate in. No weight on that just torque, figured a bushing would help guide it.

Internal and external snap rings will "lock" the bearings to hub and driveshaft housing. Now all the lateral forces will be eliminated from hub. That's what I'm working on next. Wanted to broach a hex pocket in hub,,, but way too much $ for rotary broaching. So most likely set screws or locking pin.

What size hex are you trying to broach?
ihbuilder
01-04-2016, 08:13 PM
Through hole or blind hole for your broaching ? You can make your hexes on the rotary on the mill if they are blind hole ;) . If through hole, a hex broach similar to your key broaches aren't that expensive .
Cooper
01-04-2016, 09:55 PM
Was thinking around 5/16. If I went the broaching way I would make the female part out of steel not alum. That would be the wheel hub cap. 1 , I don't have 2.5" steel stock, 2, not my favorite material to work with using small size drills/mills. (If I used the rotary table ).
I don't think a steel hex shaft would last too long in a aluminum socket, do you guys? Referring to the aluminum wearing quick, developing slop. What's your guys opinion on making the female hex socket in alum? My thoughts are on this small size 5/16 or 1/4" it wouldn't last. Or would a square hole be better? That is if I don't just go with set screws and a flat spot.

Is this for a drive hex similar to the trucks ? If so , .3125" is a lil small . The more surface area the better . Steel to alum. should be an issue if you go bigger other then the reaction you get when steel and alum are mated ( can recall the term )
Cooper
01-06-2016, 05:09 PM
I decided to go with set screws, I have three equally spaced radially onto drive shaft. Using cone point set screws and will make small divits into shaft for added security. The shaft is just rotational force, retaining rings internal and external lock bearings to not allow wheel hub assembly to slide off.

And in order to get the back axle to articulate some I had to use the ball joint rod end. Some play in shock pins will allow movement but hopefully restrict too much. Guess I will find out when an uneven load is piled in bed.

I was thinking more of a limo and some female driver ;). !!!!
There is an outfit here with a stretched, flamed 57 chev limo. That would probably be good but I'm not sure if they have a female driver? I'm sure we could figure out some to ride in the back with you though. The drive from the airport to my house is about an hour and twenty minutes. That should give you time to introduce yourself and make friends.
The truck is coming along nicely!

Made sure suspension has full travel, about 3-4" but should sit around 1/2 when unloaded depending on what springs I get. The marker area is where I have to cut a little more for driveshaft to pass when suspension is fully unloaded. I was wanting to have a roller by cabin fever but front end is going to take a bit of planning and time. And with the way drive system is I wanted to have motor as low as possible but may have big battery in lowest part. Don't know if battery is heavier than that big motor:).

Lol!!! It's been a while since I last actually saw one in the daylight, but yes Pennsylvania has beavers, and Amish too, but I don't know about Amish beavers. Maybe this weekend mark, you can ask some of our planers (Amish) if they breed any beavers or if they make too much of a mess with damming up the streams for more fruitful harvests. I don't think pa allows trapping them anymore. Or maybe you have to get a fur bearers liciens if you trap them. It's been a while since I've been on any hunting trips:lol::lol:

Question for you guys, I'm working on front suspension,,, how I want to set it up is similar to 1:1. If I use hard brass for the suspension cylinder shaft and have bronze bushings as the cylinder, will those two wear pretty well? I need the up and down of the suspension as well as the turning for steering on same vertical shaft. Shaft is 7/8 diameter and all but about 1/2" will be in touch with bushings. 1/2" in middle for travel. Bushings are 3/4"-7/8?? Tall, so most of the shaft will be securely held. I had thought of using orings as seals and guides but after thing about it I think the orings would be shot very quickly as she is a heavyweight. I even thought about having a grease fitting on top, would be hidden by top of cylinder so that is also a way to keep things lubed and moving. Sounds like overkill but this area is going to take a pounding. (And I tend to over engineer/complicate things )

She used my ID to set up her phone. Now it is like I have two phones, everything syncs with everything. No big deal but she deletes things "she" doesn't think are important. (So do I, :) but with ramifications!! ) like my pics of my truck I'm trying to build!!! And now she has a lot of music, apps paid for and would have to start over. One of these days just before I head out to one of the truck n construction events I will change my ID. That way I have all the important things with me like dozer, excavator, trucks, ect. And will have plenty of distance. ,,,,,,,, for her to spend time setting up her new Apple ID all for herself!!!

Good spy Mario, I just double checked and I do have them mounted correct, just not in the pic. I left some wiggle room on being able to tighten them down with shims or use thread lock on bolt holding them in. It's a m8 bolt holding them on. And a hub cap , so to speak, will be hiding them, and keeping grease in along with seal on inner side.
I also just double checked the steering, 36 degree angle and a 1:14 scale turning radius of 93". She is big!!!

Yes Steve, hopefully tonight I can figure out the spring and cap. I'm using a external snap ring for downward retention. And spring for suspension. I'm thinking of having the spring inside shaft so cap will not be so tall. Have to look at some more pics of 1:1.

I did think about caster and camber but for the model I think it will be more complicated and not really important. (A lot more work :). ) but I am trying to get the Ackerman geometry correct. The 1:50 model actually works accordingly with proper steer geometry (Ackerman ). So I'm shooting for that. I will not really know till I get to the cylinders and center pivot point.

A couple little things to work out, the t-bar has to be notched out for pivot point. but with full travel up and down things all work smooth. A couple clearance issues to work out but I'm happy to get it working pretty close. The cylinders will work out good but fittings may be a issue. May have to make some hardlines to locate hose fittings in better area. But big thing is cylinder stroke with ends and piston I'll have a little bit of room to spare. Somewhere around 1.5 to 1.9" of stroke. Somewhere around 3" closed and 4.9" extended.
Yes bo, I'm happy it's working out somewhat. The 1:50 model steering works but it didn't translate to the 1:14 scale well. But that may be in my measurements. Off .10" on model and that could translate into off an 1" on the 1:14. So it could have been my inaccurate measurements. By the looks of 1:1 machines the stabilizing bars are parallel with frame crossmember but in my model I can't get 36 degrees of steering angle. Right now I can get over 40 degrees and still not hitting tires on frame of binding somewhere. Even with tires (suspension ) at different maximums.

Question for you guys, would it be best to have a pressure and return line for each cylinder of make the two cylinders work as one? Like the left one being pushed with pressure line while the right one is being evacuated of oil? The stabilizers will also pull on the retracting cylinder. Just a thought I'm having. It would dramatically lessen the pushing power, and I don't really know how much force will be needed to make this thing turn. I'm fine with it if tires need to be in motion to turn. I'm not going to be static and cracking the steering.

Reg, it's time you start a big project!! (One for yourself!)
Thanks northern farmer, she is slowly coming together. I may not build perfect but usually try to make things somewhat indestructible. I just don't know what kind of forces will be applied to the linkages and holding 4mm pins will hold up. Using m4 screws for the pins in the rod ends.
Thanks jammer, seems like every new project becomes a major undertaking. I would think by now I would know going into it a lot of little road blocks await. But I keep thinking ,,, oh that will be simple, I'll figure it out when time comes:). Well that is where the ever growing box of spare parts comes into play!!!

Cooper-your work looks great but I am thinking you have the geometry backwards. Maybe I am wrong but with my old eyes it looks like the outer wheel has the tighter turning radius. I think the inside wheel should be the tighter radius. Right-wrong-not sure but I looked at the picture a long time and that's the way it looks to me. Keep at it on this monster!!

Lol modelman, my fault for having the pics different orientations!!!
So I'm starting on steering cylinders. Settled on 1/4" shafts and I D .375 cylinder. Looking at steves ,ihbuilder, post of cutting more threads on rodends. I gained a little more wiggle room and also cut out the swivel on one rodend. They are just pressed in and I will do same for the end of cylinder tube. Gives me more room for inlet and outlet oil fittings.

Got the rough length of cylinders. The shaft is short in pic, keeping everything long till I can get the swivel bearing on cylinder finalized. And to figure out how/where to have oil inlet/exit ports. They are going to be the hard part. Hats off to you guys working on small stuff!! 1/4" id cutting internal grooves for the orings is about my limit:). And I know for some of you that may be big stuff!!!

Have to trim other cylinder down and then both are to working stroke. Still have to make small blocks for m5 hose fittings. I figured out how to run lines, both will work with normal hose fittings and I don't need to make any hard lines. Guess that's next.

If it were just the lift cylinders I was going to use the small one I have from the failed dump truck hoist project. That is the smaller one from rc4wd. It has been my testing pump and probably will stay a test pump. I'm gong to bite the bullet and order premacon planetary pump and also a two valve block. I don't want to spend the bean but they have the most reliable pumps in my opinion. With steering being hydro the pump will be running all the time while in motion.

I know I said I wasn't going to make hardliners for the steering cylinders,,,,, but,,,, I did! Couple of distractions leading to soldering wrong lines in wrong places. And thought I was off on oil ports as air was escaping inside cylinder. Found out it was bypassing through the screw threads holding piston to shaft. A little bit of Teflon to seal and no leaks. On final assembly I'll use thread lock and let dry.

When you solder the cylinders together what solder do you use ? Mike
Just cheep stuff. Radio shack solder. But,,, I know from past experiences,, I should have brazed the end caps on first. Reason for that would be I could use regular solder on tubeing without the risk of other joints coming loose. As I did place some heat block (wet paper towels) around areas I didn't want to desolder. For me heating such small pieces it's pointless to use silver solder with a little higher melting point then using lesser solder on next parts. I got a big torch and I just end up going past the correct temp on areas I shouldn't. Another words , I don't really know what I'm doing:lol::lol:

Mike, staybrite on left. I used that on ends because I thought it was higher melting temp but I don't think it's any better than silver. Silver solder in middle and cheep RadioShack stuff on left I used for hose fittings and tubeing.

Well got the other cylinder done and,,,,,, well the presser test was good. I was playing around with the air, extending and retracting. I was just using the air nozzle and have a small brass tube hooked up to it that I can squeeze into the hose. As long as I keep hand tension on it , it stays put. But the trigger on the nozzle isn't too precise and it's all on or all off. Really gets the rod to slam in and out. I was trying to be gentile but I hit the trigger and blew the back right off!!! Well it handled the pressure well but not the sudden impact!!! Was being too lazy to actually hook up the pump and fill with oil!! Well looking back its good and bad. Bad that I have to resolder the back onto the cylinder but good (I guess) that a weak spot showed up now and not later:) / :(

Hello Cooper the sealant is Devcon Permatex Part number PT 54550 or 54540 The hydraulic shops use this . I had to go direct to Permatex to get some and when I did the mice person that answered me said you should find were you live and she said that she would send me some. But to my amazement it wasn't one of those little tubes but one of those large bottles and no charge. Ed

Thanks Ed, I know I can get some of this locally. have to get some hydraulic oil for 1:1 machines and take a backhoe cylinder in to dealer for repairs, when there I'll pick some of that up.
A little dab of that on bolt holding piston on will seal threads , lock them, and also seal between piston and shaft. Perfect!!! Thanks.

That's a 123 block, back has about 2-1/2" ground clearance. Front has more like 3"
I used bushings inside the springs to limit compression resulting in travel limits. Different size bushings can be arranged to get exactly amount needed. The pic has ones installed in spring and a couple laying there to choose from.

Thanks joe, Florida weather was nice for a few days, left in 70s and got home to 10s!!!
The second pic with ruler is going to be max articulation. That one pic was with no limit to travel. I wasn't sure how much material to mill/lathe out so I just figured adding spacers (internally) to the shocks would be easier than trying to set parts back into exact location for more machining. (Reality-I didn't know what I was doing or going to end up with) and that may change once I can get a load in the truck to see how much movement happens. Also can change stiffness with different springs. It's all trial and error. So I'm trying to allow for future tweaks that wouldn't be needed by making new parts.
You got to slow down on your projects joe, your gonna dig yourself out of work!!!!:lol:

I got a pump for the hydros in mail, don't know when it will be here. Once I get that I'll know how I'm going to arrange things. I may do a offset motor and have battery next to it. They are about same weight and want to keep heavies down towards bottom floor. But pump may change that. It always looks like lots of room when building but from past experiences I know space fills up quick. But,,, this one really looks like unlimited space. I am shooting for the front grill attached with magnets or hinge. Being able to access battery compartment. Sure would be easier to build the C or B models. They don't have the staircase crossing over the grill. Hopefully in a week or so she will be rolling under power. Then I find out if any of this will work. :). Like the tranny and steering. They only things I've got so far :).

The top of the shock towers is the bottom of cab floor? ...doesn't look that cramped... make a middle floor that would be the oil tank as well? pump below, valves above - other side is batt below & for/rev esc & rx above.
Fab a trap door in the bottom with a push button pin lock in the bumper, the battery slides out under the bumper.

Yes towers are floor, they are a little high yet maybe 1/4". Left some material to be able to tie into body structure. Plenty of height. Oil tank is going to be same as 1:1, side tank. I could put valve body or esc in other side tank but both of them have a lot of wires/hoses to rout so not the best location. I was going to put a radiator fan (computer fan) in this but in reality I have one in both the dozer and excavator and have never had a need for it. Never overheated anything even in hot summer. I'm building the belly pan now. I am trying to do a magnetic front grill that will give a lot of access to battery and electronics by simply removing. Lights are in bumper and higher up on sides. Grill is only problematic because a ladder diagonals it. I'll probably just have it permanently attached so just one unit (the black part of grill and ladder in front) are held on with magnets. Simply pop off install battery and pop back on. Sounds good so far, I'm sure some challenges await:)

Well,,,, the learning curve was more like a flat line with an occasional beat, then a steady curve. My biggest issue was drifting on torch angle making the rod melt before it got to puddle along with slowly drifting away from part making arc weird. Have pulse mode/settings for thin stuff but didn't want to learn with that.
Instructions are always vague for beginners. Like on new weedeaters/computer stuff. The on/off button isn't on or off but little dash or circle. I have a weedeater like that and it's hard to start, I always forget what symbol is on or off!! Still don't know what super brain decided to get rid of on/off buttons and replace with symbols I need to call my sisters boys in first grade to tell me how to turn something on!!!
Ohh, ranting on,,, oops, and got a new phone , passwords!! No more simple 0012 or my name and year born, now have to have big letters, small letters, numbers, ,,,,,
That's why I haven't posted much lately because I don't know what my own passwords are!!! Ain't technology great!! Someone can hack my account but I can't remember what letter I have to capitalize!!!!

I still have troubles keeping the torch at the right distance. For me I end up "dipping the tip". I know this sounds like a great idea but with TIG welding it is not. It F's up the tungsten and the weld. I would say you are doing just fine and will only get better. I like the fact that when I weld and then grind something, if there is a low spot or whatever I can just build it up with a little weld. Rarely any need for body filler even on rounded cabs or fenders. It really surprises me how few people do this. We are a rare breed! Welcome to the club!lol
Oh, and congrats on the house! Make sure you use the lowbed to move the equipment!

After doing a lot of self learning I picked up on quite a bit. And also on mig welding. Just didn't know what the heck I was doing.
The garage is about 40x50, wood framing. I'm planing on new floor, ceiling, insulation, the whole 9yards so to speak. Hopefully I can have it finished before fall. No water (outside hose hydrant) but I will run a gas line for heat. I'll post progress pics when I get to it.

Well I made the tank. I had some adhesive, several different kinds and did a test earlier today to see what one worked on acrylic and found one I have works. Takes up to 72 hours to cure. I have a small air pump to help ventilate inside. Hopefully speeds up set up and cure time.

Steve, thanks on the new homestead. Not much to do inside but a lot of small things needing repair on outside structures.
The table was from certi-flat or tabandslot dot com. They later cut everything very precise and all you do is clamp and weld it together. I don't like to push products but these guys make a pretty darn good product and its cheep. Like $300 compared to strong hand tables that are $3000. Accepts 5/8" clamp tools. They have all kinds and sizes. I'll look up the website later. It's something like tabnslot or tabandslot dot com. The way it's cut and put together the top comes out being +\- a couple thousands. Not bad for a inexpensive table. Also has lockable casters.

The only thing I would add is another outlet higher up in tank where you want the fluid level to be when it's full. Leave enough room for expansion when the oil gets warm and run the hose out the bottom of the Aluminum tank

Finally got around to using the tig welder on steel. Wow a lot easier than aluminum!!! I guess I'm backwards because I learned how to tig weld aluminum first then steel. Thanks reg! Humm, I may make some silicone,,, uh more tires,,,, lol!!! Garage is second thing on list of things to do. First is putting up a fence so my lazy but doesn't have to get the golf cart out to take the dogs for a walk ;). Garage is next. That's more important (for me). Lots of stuff to do. Only thing I'm not going to do is the garage doors. Going to get the professionals to do that. Siding, drywall, insulation, concrete, wire electrical, Windows, gas line from house, ,,, lots to do!! Hopefully work this summer will be slow and I can get that done fast!!!
Working on electrical hookups on dump truck now. And also have to relearn radio programming. Initially I thought I would have solder connections done tonight and test run, forgot about radio stuff, hopefully I have a spare receiver around. Hopefully have a test video in the next couple days.

Thanks joe, still in the idea stage of garage,,, vinyl siding to match 4 car garage and equipment garage on other side of house. Roof is good, no leaks. A coupe more Windows, and singe person door. 2x6 walls will be fiberglass insulation. Ceiling may end up being steel panels. (Easier than drywall/and can just screw light fixtures into it. Not heavy stuff) interior walls I'm thinking drywall with wainscot paneling of some durable integrity or easy to wipe down. I have a new gas furnace that I acquired several years ago. It will be a perfect fit with cottage base , so no duct work. As far as house I'm in now, once dogs are out I'm painting, installing new moldings, carpet, and whatever else will appeal to perspective buyer. And when the poop factory's are gone I can landscape yard. Gong to flatten out the quarry. Would be nice to devote toy time to that but time is considered. I'm sure I'll have no problem finding work for the fleet at new place. Want to put it on market as soon as possible. And also have some time divided up to fix up sisters old house to sell also. And thanks on the truck. Might be a little bit before she runs, have to find a spare rx or harvest one somewhere. Need some electrical buss bars for electrical connections too. Totally forgot about that stuff. Been trying to get parts ahead of time, just the totally spaced on that stuff.

Congrats Sir Cooper.
So soon we see a line of trailers hauling you're masterpiece to worksite ? ( i hope)
Thanks bo! Just like the 1:1 machines it would take all weekend to put her together at a show if she got delivered to worksite by trucking in pieces. !!

If you go back a few pages I show how I made the blank then the mold and silicone I used for the mold and then casting tires. Without looking myself I don't know what page but some info on others doing it also.

At least it is something I can easily identify. Haven't looked into what options I have for other driveshafts. I think she is going to be operating at slow speeds anyway. I'm not completely happy with motor/ speed controller. I may look into something along the lines of rock crawler. Maybe even a sensored motor/esc. Would be easier on drivetrain with a more controlled start up. This one doesn't want to start very slow. Kind of like a blast on initial start rotation. That should be mostly the esc.
Into the joy of body work. At least no complex curves!!

RW, trucks looking awesome!! I'm amazed at the short turning radius it has and I wish mine would turn like that. Boston gear make a bunch of universal joinst that would work in your truck. I've used them in my 3/4 scale SD-40 for over 20 years and never had a bit of trouble. Run up to page 100 and they start from there.

Awesome! I need to take my own advice and buy one of those flex heads for my 150a torch. It looks like the cup is shorter on that one as well? What brand is it? I try to buy stuff locally but it can be a joke. Either pay way too much and get it or find a reasonable price but they won't order it until they place a massive order in 6 weeks or whatever. Now that I am more current with online shopping I guess I should take a look.lol It's kinda cool to finally see someone else welding aluminum body parts together! Keep the updates coming!

Obviously I'm not to experienced in welding but I picked it up off eBay. Had the correct dinse connector and quick connect gas fitting. Was a plug-n-play item. I purchased separate gas lense collets/cups for it. A friend told me a gas lense has better gas coverage and easier to use by having ability to extend electrode a bit farther out. Anything to help me with the eye hand control and being able to see what I'm doing better. It's a wp9 torch and using 13n collets/lense.

Thanks!! Boy do I wish I had access to a water jet!! Every time I go to your builds I keep thing of my Christmas list for next year but Santa already told me a waterjet doesn't fit in his sled!! Lol!! Hey great build you are doing on that shovel!! So far most of what I had in my head has been working for this build. Only problem I see now is getting the double acting telescopic cylinders built and working.

Very nice. You can just fuse those seams together without filler but you need to be careful not to round over the sharp edge or you will need some filler to grind off.

I'm still at that point that I don't know when to back off more , in an instant the edge is gone. Just need more time doing it I guess. I've been trying to add as little as possible on the filler, I guess it's a lot like drywall, the more mud you put on the more you have to sand off. How often do you change how much gas is coming out? I've been having a hard time on inside corners and I'm thinking I may have too much gas flow as arc gets a little erratic and wanders. Does that sound correct? I've set up between 15-20 for flow. I don't know if that is what's coming out of torch as the gauge and flow meter is at tank. I don't have one of those to slip over torch. And from what I've been reading a lot is knowing how to read the arc and what it's doing to dictate what setting is needed. I'm using gas lense.

Me too!! I have to secure the top plates down and make sure cab is in correct location and then I can start bending up the bed. I don't want to weld much together yet as I need to cut details in while pieces are apart and easier to clamp down. And am still unsure what I'm welding together and bolting together to be able to have somewhat easy access to taking apart for maintenance. Still unsure if I'm making the dump body out of steel or alum. Sheet alum is easier for me to clamp down and cut than sheet steel. All hack saw and mill, no band saw. Maybe next year a variable speed metal cutting bandsaw under the Xmas tree,,,,yeah and me lucky charms will be shooting out my arse when that happens. !!! :). That was my thoughts after chatting with my Santa , she wants a new vehicle, well I found one for her if that's how she wants to play
