Thanks guys!! Well my brain has been bleeding out!! Smoke from my ears and sometimes nostrils!!! Not having any background in cnc, cad (very little) and none in cam. I figured what better way to start than making track links in a fixture with multiple parts with multiple operations!! I don't have the stock 3/8" plate I wanted to use to make 12 at a time so I'm using square stock and going to make 4 at a time. Well two and a finishing opp for the other two. Then another rotated for screw holes. I'm in the deep end of my gene pool and no lifeguards ,,,, I don't think my lineage had ever intended for me to do this!!
Some things are starting to come together but just when the do something else!! Now I need to find any good cutters I have and input all those numbers!! The material and tool list keeps growing!! At least the small cutters are not bad price wise:).
Hats of to you guys that do this stuff all day!! I've been trying to make my biggest foe my friend,,, the computer,,, but all those times I didn't agree are now paying back!! One day I may be on friendly terms with they keyboard!!! Humm., reminds me I'm out of beer! That makes ugly women look better, wonder if it makes computer work better!??!!?!?

You sound like you did when you started making tires for the dump and then the dump it self lol. You got this it'll turn out just fine, might not be cheap but nothing is nowadays! Waiting to see cool parts!

Cooper, After almost 30 years of running CNC equipment, the best advice I can give you is "TAKE YOUR TIME!!" Don't rush anything. Since you are paying for everything and have a wife to contend with, this will help save money. She should be happy that you are-1) HOME and not in a bar, 2) Trying to learn something new, & 3) Trying to save money by making things yourself. Now you need to try and hide the cost of tooling and tool holders  You can't do this but you can try!!
Enjoy your new mill. You will get the hang of it

Cooper, Got to echo Lynn, "take your time."
How you hold parts to machine them is more important to the finished part than the actual machining. Think your work holding through carefully remembering that milling tools will grab. I've seen some descriptions of how parts are held that made my hair stand up! The better you can hold the part the less chatter you'll have and your finishes will be better. And don't hesitate to ask questions if you're not sure on something. There's a ton of experience on this board and we'll all be glad to help you get started. You'll be an old hand in no time.

And broke one mill, I forgot to slow everything down in first run and account for tool path cutting the soft jaws. Changed a few things afterwards to make it cycle faster. I'm not in any hurry but don't like to see the tool moving slowly in empty space. Starting to get a taste of capabilities this cnc stuff will allow me.

Cooper-seems you have the new "cnc gizmo" figured out. Are you making another dozer or making new links for your D11? I know nothing about this modern stuff but have another silly question- wouldn't it make sense to cut the links out of wider stock and not hack up your vise jaws? Keep posting pictures and how about a video of the mill working.

I'm making a set out of alum and then another set from steel. 160 each set. The jaws are just perishable aluminum. I purposely purchased this set up for making parts like these in quantity. I probably have almost $10 in jaws but very little stock on the parts will be wasted. Stock sides are same as part side so just top, and profile cutting, so savings in the long run. I'm sure as I learn a bit more I would prefer to be making a regular fixture that could cut about 20 at a time but then I would have the added cost of stripper bolts, ( not much like a $1 a piece, but wanting 40 or so and also having them for future fixture things) I just decided a simple piece of square stock held and referenced would be simple and repeatable. And my work origin is set to a specific location on one jaw that will never change even if I remove them and replace later. So in some years later I would be able to use same jaws and make new parts very easy and repeatable. But I'm just learning and well, that's what was making sense to me then and now :).

When you go to making the links out of steel; Try some 11L17 or other free machining steel. Stessproof (1144)is nice stuff but you can only get it in rounds.

Thanks Steve, I did get some in the specific size, 3/8" square from 12L14. Also some new cutters from maritool. I know what have abused the cutters I already have and don't have many in the under 1/4" size so new tools for the cnc mill. Once they get worn I'll use them for roughing and manual milling. It's got me to learn more of the speeds n feeds and realize almost all my cutters are almost new on the sides!! Been learning a great deal of the cutting process, or should I say I've been learning a lot about how much I don't know :).

The jaws are the pieces of alum that clamp into vise,, they are called soft/perishable jaws because you cut them to hold parts. It's just a custom made vise clamp to hold that specific part. Not the best for one offparts but for making multiple parts it allows you to hold many parts for machining.

Hey kp, I've had some steep learning to do in the computer side of this cnc adventure. The actual machine is simple. And it's nice to be able to do simple things like face or pocket right at the machine without having to make a program at computer. When I first got this I couldn't find anything on break in or set up. Well they run them through a breakin routine and it's not necessary for customer to do. Right out of crate it was perfect and accurate. I did do a lot of research on retro fitting my grizzly mill verses this tormach. A bit more $ but I'm not piecing together something and I really didn't want to learn how it works but rather how to work it. I basically just got what I thought I needed to get by during the learning process. I have switched out the flood coolant to the fogboster ( air blast with minimal coolant). Way better for alum chip evacuation and not as messy. And with dehumidifier running in shop to keep rust down and forced hot air furnace the coolant was being depleted pretty quick. I didn't want to be messing with adding water and not knowing concentration without checking s.g. I do want to get the air drawbar and rotary table 4th axis. And probably get the touch screen shortly just for ease of use. I did get the probe but wish I would have just got the hiemer zero set probe. After a little bit of learning the pathpilot (similar to Mach 3) controller is pretty easy to understand. I don't think I will ever get the tool changer or enclosure. Unless I start doing more steel. If you are looking at these, take my word for what it's worth. ( I'm just a beginner) the machine is pretty solid and I am very happy with it. Plus it's about 20k cheaper than a hass mini mill!! And it's been approved by fat malbert, he just sleeps next to it while running and air compressor kicking on/off!!
My wife's mother was down to see it and she just doesn't understand why I spend $ and countless hours making this stuff just so I can sit in a chair and play with remote control toys!! Had to explain the idea of my mancave and being a manchild!!! Lol!! Parents just don't understand!!!!

Cooper, You wouldn't have had to make the pockets for the track links as deep as you did. Only needed to be as deep as what you wanted to not machine. Since you only milled on end and only about 1/3rd of the way thru the part, that is how deep the pockets needed to be. Would have saved you lots of time making the jaws and milling. Just a little info for next time!

The top and bottom are cut out. I didn't want to clamp against the little points and round end, that's why I cut them .3" deep as the part is .3" deep but offset .15" in heights from one end to other.

I've clamped to less then .06" but, seeing the way your clamping them your best off at that depth . Looks good so far.

Basic price is not bad but you must remember that you will need cutting media, replacement nozzles, and pump repairs when it breaks down. Media is not all that bad but the nozzles are carbide and expensive as they have a very small hole thru them. I can only hope that the pump repairs can be handled by the owner of the machine. Forgot about the seals and filtration system maintenance plus what type of water do you use? We had to use de-ionized water in the bigger unit to cool the pump.
Would really like to see a cost per year usage chart on this machine. Don't want to burst any ones' bubble on these machines but you must be realistic unless you are a small shop and not a home machinist.

Just an estimate but I think I have about 22-24 hours. I have a good bit of unnecessary machineing, like changeling my retract heights and feed heights that I could even get time down more. I don't have a tapping head so I'm tapping them by hand. But that is pretty easy and just a couple seconds per hole. I am not planing on making new pads and am still debating about cutting two small reliefs for links in them. Just like the 1:1 machines. The links curl fine but they don't curl backwards any because links hit. Not a big deal but it would be a simple thing to do.

Did you program the "Y" axis wrong or locate? I see some holes that look like they're in the wrong place. Or, is the tiny drill bit wondering off center from sticking out of the chuck so far? If so, add another event with a spotting drill or center drill that is more rigid then come back and finish drill.

Steve, in the first pic the divots are in the vise jaws. I drilled .05 past the part. And the jaws are only about 75% of the width of the part in order for the other jaw to clamp onto them. So if looking at that pic it looks like they are off but they are in the right location. The second pic shows parts in the jaws and were machined where they should be. And the orange strip is just a piece of vinyl tape to take up any slight difference in part sizes so all parts were held firmly in vise jaws. I did use a spotting drill 1/8" 90^ point at .04 depth so not to enlarge the holes for the #50 drill. The holes came out perfect, no wondering of the bit. At least from where I'm looking :). Lol!!!

I was worried about not having any negative arc and having to cut reliefs in each pad. But there is plenty, although the two reliefs would only help in partical release.
Steve, I am just using a 3/16" rod cut down to 1/8" on each end for the pins. Made out of brass just like first time I did them. They have lasted awhile but I still would like to make a set in steel. I am thinking I'm going to just do them the same way. Steves bushings are better but a bit more work. Although I could still do something similar. The way I have the pins , once the links are bolted to pads is when the links are secured and can roll or grind :). In the past the brass pins were the first to wear and not the aluminum. Not saying these are now easy to make but a couple years of hard service isn't too bad. For however old the dozer is , it's had a lot of time in it and links are original. I did replace pins last year. Mistakes I made on them- I cut 3/16 hollow rod and soldered onto 1/8 pins. Figured it would be easier. It was but the solder has reacted with alum and seized to where I can't get them apart. And I don't have any master link. I just take about 6-7 pads off and that allows me to work enough distance in the pins to get the one side to rotate off and then easy to pull tracks.

I know it's not any particular part but I just wanted to make something with some complex curves to see how the 3D machineing would work. All the ball endmills I have are well abused to it could have been a little better. Maybe this will help anyone thinking about one of these machines , and how easy it is. ,,, again I never had any experience with cam or cnc machines so if I can do it anyone can:). Really opens the door for some future projects I have in mind!!, enjoy,,,,

Lol!! Had some geometry in the part I wanted to see how it machined with a ball endmill. The nipple has a couple features, flat top and round curved base. The others are the lines that are barely visible at other end. They are transitions on uneven planes and curves. So the part is just a paperweight and no significance other than just playing around.
Hey reg, the best thing about this is I can't draw either!! The computer can!! Only problem with that , I don't communicate with computer very well!!!! When I want to make a simple square the darn computer asks too many questions,, like, where? What plane? What shape, size? How thick ,,, alot like a first date!!! Way too much questions and not enough actions!! But eventually I'm learning to speak computeries , very similar to my chinglish voculabarly. I've traded in my usual torture tools (hammer and torch) for more appropriate computers, now I threaten it with a magnet!!! So far the hard part of this has morphed into part holding. For the track links it made sense to cut soft jaws because of so many parts to be made. On some other one off parts the challenge has become how to design and make it with having to hold and machine it in mind. From my university of YouTube degree in cnc machineing a few guys had said that designers should spend time in the machine shop to get a better understanding of what available machines the company has can do. And the process involved. Really helps knowing what you can do and can't do. Like if I don't have a 1/2" drill then I better not make any holes 1/2" while designing my part. ,,,,, but I'm also learning from a lot of knowledgable people to think outside the box,,, like no 1/2" drills, no problem, use a 1/4" mill and extrapolate out to 1/2".

The piece of alum in front is the first jig holder I made, it was too tight and needed a relief radius for the bend of ibeams. A little humor on that side project, first ones took me about 4 hours to figure out the cam for the cnc mill, the second set took about three min!!! One nice thing about fusion 360 is they give a brief description of what task at hand will do. Nice but if you don't know what any of it means then it's basically keep hitting buttons and operations until I find one that does what I want. That's why the 4 hours vs 4 min!!

Did you take a pic of new vs old sprockets together?
Was it the pitch that changed or the old sprockets worn that much?

I'll get a couple pics tomorrow, I changed the relief angle on the new one to a bit tighter to "hold" a bit better. But after I cut them and physically looked at them I realized it may have been too tight but they work and don't bind. Only will get looser as time goes :). I'll show what I'm referring to when I get a pic.

Sorry joe I didn't really read your question,
Pitch was same, I think when I had dozer apart I placed the left sprocket on right side and vise versa. I know it doesn't matter but with the wear I think when the dozer backs up it is more prone to skipping. (Design geometry of high sprocket) and more wear from forward motion. Combined to enable them to skip quite a bit when it was backing up. That's what got my attention. At cabin fever it was skipping some but I just figured I had loaded some dirt in tracks. They were the original sprockets. They have seen three bushing replacements,( track pins worn out) and now a new set of tracks) so how many years she is, 3-4? And has pushed a lot of dirt. Road wheels had bushing replaced, along with new shafts, and small wheels were completely shot that I recently replaced them with steel ones. . I doubt it will happen (probably a new dozer first) but if I get the time and ambition I would like to make track links, link pins, and sprockets from steel. But now I should be good to go for anothe year or two. I imagine before long the motors are going to need replaced. They are worm reduction and only have one side of the final output shaft that has a bushing on it. Frankly I'm really surprised they are still going strong!! As I speak I am now thinking of ordering new ones,,,, Murphy's law!?!??!! Lol!!

Old ones didn't have as much height on top of teeth and more taper angle. But they were worn a bit. The new ones are also side tapered towards the top of teeth. I hope that will help pierce any dirt that gets in links verses them being more flat packing it in there. Didn't have much of a problem before unless I would have a lot of dirt roll into the tracks from side pushing or sharp turns.
And went up to the local cat dealer today for service on some equipment and brought the d11 with, told them I needed work on a d11 and had it in the back of my pick up truck,,,yeah, it went quiet,,, then a couple of them came out to look. Before long they pretty much shut down and had about 30 people out checking it out. I think they enjoyed seeing it and said to bring it and anything else up again.
And it's not often these guys come to the dealership for trade or service but I got to see an older d11 up close. I wish I would have taken a pic of blade.

Spent a lot of time with the ripper, the clumps of grass are not easy to dig with the blade. Once loosened with the ripper they came up. Stripping all the grass off to get to the good stuff, dirt!! I wasn't sure what the dirt would be like in this location but it looks to be better than the topsoil I had been importing from before. More small stones but good so far :).

Here is a video. I switched to a different way to upload video, it only took 5min to upload but quality is poor. I'm still trying to figure it out :). But some video.
I did bring the tractor over and tilled up the grass. Only one pas with the tiller to just break the sod up. It is still tough to push. Chunks of grass are sometimes harder to push than rock. And the tracks don't slip but hit some small rock every once in a while when it appears to skip. New tracks and sprockets were hiding up well, dirt was pushed into tracks and still didn't foul them. Happy so far.

I like running the excavator but it has now become fun to run the haul truck too. I may need to rethink the lay out and create a longer haul road. :). Mario? Hint hint. Lol!!

I had been messing with so many different computer things that I'm not sure what I actually did, I think it was an ap called YouTube uploaded. I took video on iPhone and uploaded it with that app right to YouTube (I think) :).
And yes I really should start thinking about a new hoe,,, a lot of things are starting to wear, this will be the third swing motor, still works but a lot of play, track motors just don't have the strength. Or some more modifications. Probably go with that when something completely fails. And yes a little extra help was outsourced for the ground cover removal to start stripping the topsoil down to concrete wall grade from the old silo. Really the only reason I did use the tiller was to save some wear n tear on the lil' company assets. I did use the ripper to rip a 6x6' area. Sod ripping is pretty tough on the dozer:). from now on it should be all company equipment and no more sub contracting. :). Unless stone or soil needs to be imported.
And I wish I would have had taken more videos when we had mr nutters in the house. Thanks for sharing joe:).

A little rusty with the controls and a little more slop in the swing but some more hoe digging. This is stripping the grass and topsoil from around the old silo base. It's kind of like a strip mine because a layer or grass, a layer of decent dirt, then a layer of shale. I'm not sure how deep the stone and shale is. The dozer needs to come in a do some more ripping. I'm trying to get down to the bottom of the concrete along the walls. And no more sub contracting ;).

Oh but if food is on the countertop his jelly rolls of amber fur sure don't have a problem getting there!! I think ya can see by his super physical shape he has no problem with being transported to the feed pile!!!
Hey on the ripper attachment, next time you have camera out snap a pic or two of how that little thing works. It's electronic correct? Or where to get the devise to actuate the pin, or mechanisms that lock it. I can't really add a hydraulic one without a lot of work but if it's electric that would be fairly easy. And the last one, hope someone likes watching a dozer ;). With the new tracks and sprocket I have not had to clear tracks once yet!! I've been careful to not intentionally let a lot of dirt roll into tracks. And these last videos have been some really bad stuff to run in. It is stone that has a good bit f dirt in it. Almost like clay when wet and rock hard when it drys out. And just being rock is a challenge. I always called this stuff modified when we get it from the quarry, I don't know if that is the correct name, it's a mix of 2b stone all the way down to screenings and any dirt from the process.

Jim
Jim, pads are original ones, I made new links, almost the exact same as original ones. On the first set I had the link pins slightly offset as to be closer to the sprocket. (Height wise) and on the new ones I have them centered. That was actually a flaw because I didn't catch that offset until I had already started cutting new ones. So I just ran with it. :). But I don't think that makes much difference. The difference I made was to have slightly longer teeth on the sprocket and to have them more pointed. Plus on the geometry I tightened up the gap a little bit. If you look at a normal sprocket the gap is not exactly the size of the pin, but a little wider and get even wider as it gets towards top of tooth. On mine I lessened that gap. I think the combination of a sharper tooth ,(that will push dirt out instead of keep packing it in) and the tighter sprocket gap was key. I really should have relief holes in the track pads like 1:1 machines. That would also push out any dirt. But keep in mind the size of these things anything much bigger than sand grains is a problem. Also a long time ago titandigs gave some great advise on increasing the gap between the actual pads. Too tight of a gap will make the pads arch up if any little bit of dirt sticks inbetween them. I'll try and get some pics of the sprockets that may make it easier to see. Kind of hard to put into words, especially for me:). What I'm thinking and what I'm conveying aren't always the same;). Lol!!!

Jim, I figured I better just snap a pic while I'm thinking about it or I will forget to later!! The new one is on left and old one in right. The old one is worn a bit but not too far off original. And I can't get a pic of top profile of teeth but the new sprocket teeth are more pointed as the old ines were just as wide as base.

And one just for Mario, haha, I'm using your idea of pre-digging with the bigger toys:). Lol!! Loaded up most of the brick/rocks and hauled away. Now I definitely need to make a screening plant. Lots of smaller rocks but still big for the 1:14 scale. If I knew the future would yield a rock crusher I would keep the bricks close by. Perfect material for a crusher!! If you do see this Mario, hope you are doing well with the new homestead and family. Many years to follow to watch your backyard quarry project!!!

Thanks, first full year at the new dig site, so I brought over some dirt to push around and build some stuff with. First mechanical problem of the year too, something let loose with hydraulics. Haven't got into to see what exactly let loose. It's down in the pump area and have to tear down quite a bit to get at it. I'm hopeful that it is a fitting and not the pump.
https://youtu.be/RIl9SAZtyeA
Video of pushing the top off and towards the end you can hear the gurgling of fluid. At first I thought it was sucking air from just being low on oil (a small leak on one of the lift cylinder seals) so I kept running but then realized something let loose inside:( didn't have to carry it , short distance to shop:)

Found the problem, the black 90 degree fitting right in middle of pic, is a90 coming out of the pump. I know these fittings are not rated for much but like almost everything the ratings on industry stuff is in the underrated side. They have been holding up in everything else I have used them in. I think the oring in the hose fitting side was compromised somehow. And I'm pretty sure they were oil tolerant. In pic below you can see the oil bubbling out.

Used a reducer on pump and this type of 90 for a "hopefully " quick fix. I'm glad it wasn't the pump, found a couple other issues, a couple loose screws (haha) and one of my electrical connections was a little loose.

Yes, the parts department was stocked and the service department was quick with work!! Lol!! Now my local cat service wasn't so nice recently, had a backhoe swing cylinder that was leaking,, $1080.00 later I had her up and running. Had less than $50 in seals and nothing wrong with cylinder, no re-chromeing, no spray welding, no boar/honing, just the service to replace seals. $1000 for just that!!! Well it was off a case hoe and cat service but they work on all equipment at this location. I could carry the cylinder filled with oil so it wasn't something that needed overheat crane. Good lesson to learn how to do it myself!! I know they need to get paid too but a grand for seal replacement! Guess I should have said I was an individual/personal not put it on our account!! Amazing how the price of a new hoe is xxx for an individual and if I had the county or township checkbook is would be xxxx more!! Lol! That's a whole different topic that I'm not happy about my tax dollars,,,,, although I did take the dozer up to them and had the whole shop out in parking lot takeing pics:).
Anyhow,,, rain again here today, this is definitely the wettest year we've had ever!! So the service guys here should be finishing up on the d11 today:)

Jim, another thing I forgot to mention was the bigger holes in side of links. That is allowing more material to get pushed out if tip of sprocket compacts it into links. A helpful combination of all these small changes, none big but combination has been working well. I imagine you were asking in regards to your dozer,?, might not apply as the smaller tracks get the particles of dirt don't. I still get the tracks to arch up if the dozer stalls and tracks keep moving. They just dig and really fill up the pads. Usually one rotation of tracks and it settles out. In some of the videos you can see, I think last one. When the wheelhouse bounces it's usually the tracks arching up and catching the fenders.
Yeah, good ole me nutters, pretty sure he is gone but a new plentiful generation of hopefully his descendants have been raiding all the bird feeders, along with a plentiful group of raggits and the groundhog is back!! I was trying to trap the groundhog but wife thought I may catch a dog in it. (One less snort and fart doggie) ;). Lol!! But that would result in probably one less me!!

the way I see it RW, it's not cheating, it's the right thing to do for the reasons you mention. Ultimate goal is to have fun with our machines not break them. Yes things wear out , that's normal. Breakage means bad operator or using beyond expected limits.:D

The dirt pile is about 10 feet away from base of the larger tree you see in background. And I would be fine killing it!! That tree is a junk tree, every time wind blows limbs come down. Cut one that was next to it last year it was about a half bigger. Only reason it is still there is I really don't want to cut any down as benifit of shade but as soon as the hemlocks recently planted take off and get decent size its Paul Bunyan time!!! And the same fitting that I replaced on dozer let loose on the excavator. Ok that they were purchased at same time but the dozer one has been in service for a good but more than the hoe, maybe the temps had more to do with it. Just odd that they break at similar times. I think the oring inside was what was compromised. And they being used outside the rated pressure range. But had some other fittings in stock and back running. :).

And I'm pretty excited about our new employee:). It's an odd situation as he is incarcerated. Something to do with property damage charges. But he is allowed to work on a work release program that the local warden arranged. So in the pictures that is why he is behind bars. I've been told that he is great at excavating tunnels and clearing weeds and brush. He doesn't talk much, but clicks his teeth and it's kind of annoying but I was told that he prefers to work alone and to just give him simple tasks. So we will see how this years seasonal help works out.

Benny came over Saturday for the afternoon and helped move some material. I'm pretty sure he enjoyed it as much as I did, great to have you over and always welcome!! A couple pics of some heaped loader buckets!! And all in all I think Benny was making just as much progress in moving the dirt as I was with the haul truck. He was able to load his truck and transport as much material in the same time it took me to load the haul truck with the excavator for one load!! And one pic for size comparison of the two trucks.
And showed him around and he may have convinced me to clean up the lower part of barn to make room for an indoor area. That opens a lot of possibilities and ideas for future plans. Would have to make a screening plant, (have been wanting to anyway) may need to have more people come over to transport materials as it would have to be done with trucks, too low of ceilings for skid steer. So that also would be insurance for the company's future:)

Oh and also a shout out to bo, a year or so ago you gave me some wooden mats, with the soil being so dry and loose I was able to use them under the excavator and keep within reach of the haul truck. Appreciate them and making good use of them. Next excavator needs to have a thumb, really helpful in positioning them!! When I get the barn project ready, we'll have plenty of concrete road surface and the need for some oversized transport trucks!!

His three brothers and sisters played a game of chicken on road and lost!!
Thank you for not hurting the little guy :) You going to relocate him ?

I was undecided before I posted earlier, but I thought the shape of it's head, buck teeth & not much for claws, it was a beaver  ...sitting on its azz, can't see its tail :D

And the excavator finally wore out the second set of track drives, was just going to order new motors but not in stock,,, and they are not a true planetary gear but a spur gear reduction. I've been messing around with this idea for some time and never went anywhere with it. Well now I have from necessity. I had these small planetary gear reduction motors laying around and decided to put them to use. I will not know if they are strong enough until they are installed. I did a simple test in a vise and they are way too fast. I have the 195 rpm ones, should have the 27(? Forget the number off hand) rpm ones tomorrow. Some progress on them.

RW, the motor you are holding looks like the new ones I put on my little Oliver Dozer? I was under the impression that they are planetary? I think servo city advertising indicates planetary and they cost a bit more than the spur gear version.
Man, the indoor area would be COOL! I would love to have something like that!

I may have confused the situation. Yes Jim these ones are true planetary reduction motors. The ones I was referring to were the original ones from the excavator, and the replacement (same) ones sold on rc4wd under spare parts for the excavator. Those are spur gear reduction motors. I'll try and post some more pics (if pb doesn't delete them) of the whole workings.

Oh wow! I never knew of such a devise!! What evil genius came up with that!?!?!! I bet he was bald, pulled his hair out from scrapping parts with broken taps, then developed this!! Lol!!! Can't grind/drill/pull it out just liquefy it!! Brilliant!! Thanks for sharing Steve, and nice find. Now just remember you have it next time you break something:). Would be neat to see it used.

The new parts look great!
That's really interesting, i had no idea that was even a tool! So it's a water cooled vibrating arc cutter that blows the center web out of the broken tool and flushes away the particles? Awesome!
I'd played with broken tap extractors, and seen how to use alum if you have a couple days to disolve tap.
I think Cooper has a point.. "No Mr Bond, i expect you to die. My henchman will see to that while he removes your tap."

Cooper,
If you use roll taps (form taps) they have a lot less tendency to break. The kicker is they really only work in machines, not by hand. Also the typical tap drill chart your probably using is calling for 75% thread. By using bigger tap drills you can go all the way down to 55% thread. This is usually a must on taps m2 or smaller.

And a picture line up of parts, I did go with the 26 rpm plantaries. 583 oz-in of torque. They have been able to drive up and over my boots with no problem so I may be in for track breakage issues down the road. But speed is excellent. Not fast and not a snail.

Hey thanks!! Some tweaking on parts, forgot to add a hole for wires to pass through. And then the motor wires need to be soldered after parts are together. The plastic housing is a little too tight of a fit but they work:) and to my suprize I went up about a 1 1/2 foot incline that was about a 45 degree incline (probably more than that). Steep enough that it was sliding backwards and had to use the bucket to pull it up. Tracks didn't stall. Now I'll have to see how it takes debris in links with sprocket. ?? Hopefully tomorrow I'll get some videos.

Good lookin' parts! I just ordered a Tormach 770 about an hour ago, I think you and your thread are partly to blame :) I'm looking forward to your loader build, we have a 990 at work with forks on it, its our 40ton forklift!

Can't you clamp a giant solid block of material down on the mill and push a button and have it machine a loader while you take a nap? Didn't expect to see individual parts like those rims?:p

I have been told (usually by law enforcement and teachers) that I am a bad influence !!!!! the 770 spins up to 10k , that is a big benefit!! still in the learning process but machine is doing everything it should. solid right out of the crates, I did have to place a .005' shim under one corner, tramed it in with indicators then test cuts, perfect now. was perfect before but one mistyped offset put a 3/8 mill into the workpiece hard. so I checked it after that. really is a turnkey set up , keep me posted on anything you make.

yes I did buy a 1:50 norscot model. like mark said I will use that and dimensions from cat to replicate. I said ordered but was referencing the order sent to myself:) will be making in Tamiya 14 scale (not really sure what exact scale that is 1:14 or 1:14.5 scale?

I really wanted to just pour overtop existing concrete. I need to raise up floor to have better surrounding drainage. But after pulling some broken areas up found that base is crap and concrete varies from 1" to about 6". And that's not at edges but all over. Part of trying to keep expense down I'm doing the floor demo and slider door along with overhead door. Had some guys call and they need the work so might be getting underway within the week.

I've a Fry's credit card. Currently I've NOTHING on credit. EVERYTHING was paid off 2 months ago. Time to get something, to maintain an active credit rating. So, with that being said................I'm thinking of acquiring a 3D printer. Does this one look like a respectable option?

Skeeter, I'm by far from knowledgable about printers, mine is old by today standards. And they don't make the same model. But one thing I know is the acetone bath is acetone vapor not actual bathing or submersing in acetone. I'm sure finer resolution is with newer printers. Again I would love to help but I wasn't and really still am not too knowledgable of printers. Quite honestly, I still fight with computer quite often, sometime think a hammer would be better !!!! RW, about how much print time should one expect from the SMALL rolls of filament? I've got about 4 hours on the small roll that came with my printer, & it's still going. I'm just curious, so I know about if/when to AVOID trying to print LARGE parts overnight while sleeping. I'd hate to have it run out in the middle of a project, & me awake thinking it would be all done when I awoke, & find it partially done. That, & I think it'd be hard on the extruder, & print bed to be kept at temp all night long, while not doing anything.

For the small rolls (I forgot how big they are, came with the printer) the answer is around 30 hours of print time.

Thanks skeeter, and yes!! Have the perfect project for many years to come. Once I get the time I'm going to make an indoor screening plant. Large scale!! Well still scale to our equipment but want to move a lot of material. I have a lot of dirt that has been dumped for fill from rock raking /seeding yards. Perfect to haul into barn and then use the scale equipment to process. And best part I'll gain that wasted soil back. Might take a couple weeks to process a couple yards and then just a couple scoops with 1:1 equipment :). But it is an endless supply with a purpose. !!

About how much machining time do you have in 1 axle? Your machining is outstanding!!
That is a hard question to answer, many parts,,, with wheels, probably around 12-13 hours? But I'm still learning and playing with numbers. Like the axle extension part that I.d. Of bearings slip over I had 1.5 hours in machine time. But now getting specs on insert and cutter I can probably drop that down to 45min. And another tool path I was using cutting speeds same as rapids and that took a 1hour program down to 30min. But I'm not breaking or pushing things:). Lots to learn for a simple mind like me:). And lots to improve speed up on. But I'm not trying to speed things up as in a production environment but just hate to see slow movements when tools are not engaged in a cut. :). And after the initial program was proven to do what intended. The bearing pockets were a few trial/error and sneaking up on proper clearences to get them a snug hand press fit. Wasn't using a boar tool just path and the tollarances on machine are pretty good. I'd say I get a good 80% score mark all way around bearing pockets. Good enough for me ;).

Target is for before cabin fever, time to get any bugs worked out :).
And yes another opp to flip those parts and machine any leftover stock, some pieces can just be cut down, some need aluminum jaws cut to specific shape to hold parts while machineing. I will see if I can get a pic of what I did with them.
Not sure what final weight is gonna be, I know the tires alone are gonna be around 5lbs each. Heavy enough that I've had thoughts of ramps or rigging to load into vehicle 😛😛

Ken, these are the “soft jaws” I am referring to. The setup I have allows aluminum extrusions with a dovetail to be easily swapped out if the vise. Then these pieces of aluminum are the new vise jaws that can be machined to the shape of part. Basically custome workholding. First opp was to cut the parts out of plane stock. In the pic with many parts you can see. Then a set of jaws are machines to take those pieces and flip over allowing each piece to be clamped and held while machineing the original bottom side that is now the topside. And then another jaw was cut to hold parts in a vertical position to drill the hole for shaft. A lot of work but for multiple parts it’s a big savings.

Learning all this stuff and all the processes machinests go through has made me realize why prices and time are the major factors in quotes for getting parts made. One part and a lot of set up time plus material costs then if multiple parts are done that price can be significantly reduce per part. So hats off to you guys that do this for a living and I will not complain (as much :) ) about costs of parts :). Hope this helps understanding ken, it’s taken me quite a while to understand these processes and I know I’m just at the tip of the iceberg!!

Thanks man, nope I’ve been cutting them on the mill. Wish I had access to a lazer !!! I did have to make a fixture plate so I could bolt down flat stuff. It’s not ground flat but way cheaper than buying one!! I use a piece of alum sheet under parts as a sacrificial buffer so I don’t cut fixture plate.

I’m new to this designing in the computer stuff, I know I should draw the entire model and then see how things fit, move, etc,,, but I’m still half backwards and just can’t wait!! So I draw up most of the parts/assembly and then cut things as I’m going. Probably gonna but me in the azz before long. Hard part is trying to think ahead of what needs to have holes or additions down the road. :). I’ve been using cad software for the designing and machineing stuff. Using autodesk fusion 360.

Kitty thinks you number one.
When doing that type of profiling , you could use plywood for your base plate or between your aluminum base plate and part since you aren't worried about the Z axis being all that critical. Then bolt it down using holes you have put in part or hold down clamps.
Use several so you can move them out of the way of the cutter as it advances then put them back as needed.

Hey Cooper, awesome work! I build offshore oil rigs for a living, quite often the design basis is called "design-build", meaning we start construction way before design is complete. In my experience, it works well but we typically see up to a 30% revision rate based on the count of drawings issued......the idea is you can actually build a project quicker by designing at the same time you build. I'm doing the same in my garage now. I think I enjoy the cam more than the cad.... I ordered a fogbuster today, do you have a particular coolant you like?

I purchased the fogbuster from tormach, I use that most of the time as I’ve been finding out the liquid coolant just doesn’t have enough pressure to get chips out of pockets. And I recently found out tormach made it that way as they don’t intend the flood coolant to be a chip evacuation but more of a lube/coolant setup. The fog buster is more for evacuation of chips. I switch to flood for surfacing with any ball mills. Oh and I’ve just been using the coolant mix they offer, basically because lack of knowledge and experience with any other products. And I like the more clear flood coolant than the milky ones. Purely for visual reasons.

And finally the dog was on my side of an argument!! Yes he is chewing on my wife’s head!! Big puppy!! Just had him to the vet and he weighs in at 189#!! Hence the Great Dane construction company:).

And also made the lift cylinder mounts for the lift arms

They are made to be a press fit into the arms and just some small hardware to give some insurance to stay put. In the pictures I don’t have them pressed in just located for pictures.

And the framework between lift arms. This part was difficult to cam and to machine, have 5 different set-ups and about 4.5 hours in it. This is a pic mec-eng, where I do use flood coolant because I’m using a 3D toolpath and ball mill. Better finishes.

And the square outside will be welded flush with lift arms, and they are a press fit also.

Hi Cooper
:):):)
Great work as ever loving the CNC work.
Just taken delivery of a small 6040 CNC
So will be starting to produce some of my items in metal now instead of plastic.
Loving Fusion 360 for my 3D printing so how have to make the move to use the CAM part for the CNC machine
Keep up the good work and thanks again for sharing with us all
